## **Objectives and Activities**

|||
|---|---|
|Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document|The object of the CIO is to relieve the needs of people
in the UK who stammer by holding courses and
providing ongoing support not normally provided by
the statutory authorities, which allows a person who
stammers to talk in a calm and controlled manner.|
|Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.|Activities are held around the UK to help stammerers
control their speech. During the reporting period, we
have held two courses in Peterborough, with courses
planned for Bath and Sheffield.
We have an extensive support network for our
members, which includes online group sessions,
Facebook and WhatsApp support, a support directory
and in-person support groups.
We act as advocates for the stammering community,
being invited to speak at events both in-person and
virtually.|
|Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit|The trustees have considered guidance on public
benefit. The Charity’s operations are centred on
supporting the needs of stammerers in the UK.|

## **Achievements and Performance**

|---|---|
|Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|The reporting period is characterised best in two
ways:
1. The establishment and development of
Empowering Voices as a resource for the
stammering community.
2. Introduction of our courses and support streams.
Empowering Voices was founded with five trustees;
during the reporting period, this has grown to eight.
We have established charitable relationships with
international businesses to provide platforms such as
email, web hosting, invoice management, fundraising,
social media and image creation.
Extensive work has been undertaken to build
relationships within the stammering community.
Notably, Empowering Voices has formed links with the
British Stammering Association (STAMMA), who
promote our courses on its website.
Starting a service-driven charity was always going to
be challenging. Nevertheless, our success in
attracting supporters to help run courses and provide
ongoing support has exceeded expectations.
We conducted two courses during the reporting
period, with a total of 50 attendees. Those attendees
have been at various stages in their journey to
achieve effortless, fear-free speech, 11 of whom had
never learnt a technique such as ours before.
Such was the response that we have announced two
further courses for 2025 and have started planning for
2026.
Our success in helping stammerers is not limited to
courses. ## YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH 2025

## 1 ACCOUNTING POLICIES

## Accounting convention

The financial statements have been prepared under the historic cost convention. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities (FRS 102 SORP) effective from 1st January 2019, and applicable UK Accounting Standards, the Charities Act 2011 and the Companies Act 2006.

## Funds structure

Unrestricted income funds comprise those funds which the trustees are free to use for any purpose in furtherance of the charitable objects. Unrestricted funds include designated funds where the trustees, at their discretion, have set aside resources for a specific purpose.

Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by the donor or the terms of a specific appeal.

## Income

All income is recognised once the charity has entitlement to the resources, it is certain that the resources will be received and the monetary value of income can be measured with sufficient reliability.

Income from donations is included when these are receivable, except as follows:

- When the donors specify that the donations given to the charity must be used in future accounting periods.

- When donors impose conditions which have to be fulfilled before the charity becomes entitled to use such income, the income is deferred until the preconditions have been met. Income from grants, where there are performance or service deliverables required by the terms of the grant, are accounted for as the charity earns the right to payment through its performance.

## Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to the expenditure. All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that agree all costs related to the category. Support costs have been allocated 100% towards raising funds for and the charitable activities of the charity.

## Charitable activities

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF EMPOWERING VOICES**

I report to the charity’s trustees on my examination of the accounts of Empowering Voices for the period ended 31 March 2025.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act), as amended by s.145 of the Charities Act 2011) and that an independent examination is needed.

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under the company law and is eligible for independent examination; it is my responsibility to:

- Examine the accounts (under section 145 of the 2011 Act),

- To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) Act), and

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required by audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

- (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect:

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
