Structure and management.

The Scaplen’s Community Players are a local group who’s aim is promote historical theatre in the local community, through storytelling, drama and music. Our main goal is bring together local people from diverse communities to better understand our history and shared culture. The group is made up entirely of volunteers and are organised by a committee and other coopted individuals.

Activities and objectives in the year

Our objectives in 2024 were;

Achievements

Our main production; ‘Unbroken Bonds’, was a World War 2 based production, consisting of a series of monologues, songs of the time and a play set in around Poole in the days up to and approaching The D-Day Landings. Our performances were a great success as evidenced by two excellent reviews from Scene One Plus and Dorset Theatre Reviews. Also, our audience feedback surveys, many people commented that they would like to see more of what we do.

As well as this production, we also performed ‘The Hiring Fayre’ a Street Theatre performance and four historical stories at two large outdoor events in Poole, The Beating of the Sea Bounds last July 2024 and The Seafood and Sounds Festival in September 2024, a two-day event that we have been invited to participate in again.

We held a run of successful workshops including a Dance workshop, a stage fight and drill workshop, a talk on 'The Art of Directing' and a guest speaker talking about 'Characterisation and Performance Skills'.

Financial Review

It has been a successful year financially. Total income for the year amounted to £2791 whilst our expenditure was £1296 leaving us with a positive balance of £1495. Of this surplus, some £400 is ‘earmarked’ for our 2025 production.

Donations and membership fees, including the aforementioned £400, amounted to £1720 with which we were extremely delighted. The committee has endeavoured to keep ALL costs, both production and non production, to a minimum and our positive financial balance is evidence that this has been achieved. We are in a good position for our 2025’s production, ‘Echoes of Love’, which will be a sequel to this year’s production focussing on events & people in around Poole in the days up to and approaching V. E. Day

Summary

We believe that we have successful in our aim to bring together local people from diverse communities and provide an opportunity for them to participate in our performances and activities and this is demonstrated by our successful productions and our membership in our very first year.
