**ANNUAL REVIEW MUSIC DIRECTOR’S REPORT 31 March 2025**

When we returned to rehearsals after the summer break last year (and Gill and my amazing honeymoon in Vietnam!), we embarked upon a fun programme of West End Musical hits for a concert in G Live on Saturday 16 November, accompanied by the ever-brilliant Friary Brass Band. Great too to have Kevin “Apple” Cripps visiting us in rehearsal one week to help us with authenticity, style and delivery. What an evening it was: some brilliantly stylish performances with the choir just having a ball and thoroughly enjoying the whole occasion! I appreciate that this music is not to everyone’s taste, but my view is that it is the sort of fare that is more likely to fill G Live than something more mainstream. Besides, it provides variety for the choir and that, as we know, is the spice of life! We had a great evening, relishing medleys and songs from _The Lion King_ , _Guys and Dolls_ , _The King and I_ ; selections of ABBA, Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, even Queen … thereby transporting choir members to places they had never been before, and doing things they never thought they be asked to do (and may never want to repeat!). My last evening at G Live with you was a blast!

Soon after that, on Tuesday 3 December, a group of us took a magical mystery tour coach journey up to Cadogan Hall in London to participate in the annual Christmas Carol Concert for the MacMillan Cancer support charity, the second year we had taken part: lots of celebs and an exciting festive mood. Our first contribution, Samuel Barber’s beautiful _Sure on this shining Night_ was a little flat in terms of spirit, but we roused ourselves superbly for our other pieces. We had been asked to premiere a new work by Adrian Sutton ( _An Advent Calendar_ ) which was a challenge and required a good deal of rehearsal. On the night, it was a huge privilege to give its first performance and despite the nerves, we gave it a very fine send-off. The composer and conductor seemed thrilled and the whole event was very moving and worthwhile.

Next on the schedule was our annual Mayor of Guildford’s charity carol concert in Holy Trinity on Sunday 15[th] December – always such a special evening. This year was no exception. Joined again by the lovely and brilliant Willow Northeald on piano and organ, we gave the capacity audience a festive treat of many well-loved carols. It being my last Christmas concert in HT, I packed the programme with many of my favourites (plenty or John Rutter!) and my absolute favourite person sang the first verse of _Once in Royal_ beautifully. I was very moved by the audience reception at the end of the concert.

Into my last year and our annual ‘Come and Sing’ event in Millmead. The slightly later date (Saturday 15 February) did not seem to deter people for turning up for a first look at the big work for 2025: the Berlioz _Te Deum_ . It was another vocally challenging but really enjoyable day, punctuated by generous tea/coffee breaks and a wonderful, brilliantly organised lunch. Again, we were joined by Tom’s Trust helpers and Rob and his Millmead team were always on hand to iron out any potential problems.

Meanwhile, in rehearsal, we were concentrating on Rossini’s weird and wonderful _Petite Messe Solennelle_ , for a concert we gave on Saturday 22 March in Holy Trinity. And what a superb performance it was! Because we had the luxury of plenty of rehearsals for this concert, you got to know the notes really well, which in turn gave you confidence in performance to look up, share your passion for the work with the audience and look completely engaged with your singing. Having that magnificent harmonium and its owner/player with us was a real treat and Francis’s playing throughout the concert was as expert as ever. It was so lovely for both of us to be able to share the platform for what will be our last concert together. Apart from the bass, who sang intelligently and musically, the soloists were a disappointment: underprepared, uncommunicative in performance and musically naïve – a shame. But you, the choir, really shone and gave “one of the best concerts ever” to quote some of the effusive feedback I have received. I maintain that on this sort of performance, the choir remains in very good shape and I am extremely proud of the legacy we have created together. I believe I hand the choir over to the new MD in good health and spirit.

Of course the last few weeks have been given over to auditioning for your new Music Director. Beyond offering a view on a shortlist for interview from initial application forms, my feedback has not been sought, so this process has been handled by the special sub-committee and the wider Committee. I hope the final choice of candidate reflects your own feedback and that the direction in which you, the Committee and the new Music Director want to take the choir, are all of one accord. I absolutely support the choice and final decision, and it goes without saying that I wish the new Music Director a long and successful time with you and I hope you continue to sing with passion and discipline, carry on programming boldly and imaginatively, and never lose the sense of fun in the process.

But before I take my leave from the choir, let none of us forget that there is the small matter of our grand finale concert in the Royal Albert Hall on 13 July. This should be epic and I trust you will enjoy the occasion as much as I will. The Ravel, the Poulenc and the Berlioz are all great works and there is no shortage of Spotify and YouTube links to direct you to audio and video performances of all these works if you don’t already know the works. It is amazing that we will have both Lucy Crowe and Nicky Spence singing with us that evening – two of the hottest singers at the moment. Joined by the Guildford Choral Society and many other singers, both the Farnham Youth Choir and Tiffin Choirs, we will number well over 400 singers; plus the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra of course and the hall’s imposing organ taking centre stage – what’s not to like?! Many thanks to all who are working tirelessly to make this run efficiently and smoothly. And please, sell, sell, sell tickets for what promises to be an utterly thrilling and unforgettable evening!

I’m not certain whether anyone is talking about the amounts of money we have raised for charity over the period, but I am sure it is not insignificant. It is an extremely worthwhile part of our activities and I think we should all be very proud of what we achieve in that area. Long may that continue.

Since last September, when this review starts, Francis has been weighed down by personal health issues which have sadly kept him away from rehearsals. We are so pleased to see you back Francis, hopefully improving all the time. I hope you will have felt the huge amount of affection that emanates from us all and I hope you will be able to use that love to help you make a full and lasting recovery. Despite your health problems, you have remained steadfast and dedicated, and your playing has barely shown any signs of the pressure you must have been under. Thank you sincerely from us all.

As ever, thank you to Richard and all the Committee for their dedication and work. Thanks too to those not on the Committee who keep things going behind the scenes, making rehearsals and concerts work so well. It is a huge task and we should not underestimate the vast amounts of time and energy that go on in the background to support us and our endeavours. With the appointment of a new Music Director and the big Royal Albert Hall concert, as well as a plethora of everyday matters, Richard especially has had to get up to speed quickly and we should all be grateful to him for his doing so, and for demonstrating his expertise in so many areas, both musical and organisational.

As ever, my final thanks go to you, the choir, for continuing to come on such an exciting journey with me. We are almost there and I will talk briefly about our 30 years together at our Summer Party on Monday 14 July. But, for now, once again, thank you for your wonderful singing, your warm friendship and dedicated commitment. Together we have created a wonderful legacy which has allowed us to attract the very best of candidates to take the choir on the next stage of its journey. I will miss you, but I wish you all the very best on that next stage.

**ANNUAL REVIEW CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 15 January 2026**

## **Chairman’s Report**

for the year ended 31 August 2025

The 2024-25 musical year marked one of the most memorable and significant seasons in the choir’s history. Alongside our regular concerts at G-Live and Holy Trinity Church, we staged a hugely ambitious and successful farewell concert in the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate Jeremy’s remarkable 30-year tenure as Music Director.

On the day of the concert, the combined voices of Vivace Chorus, Guildford Choral Society, Twickenham Choral, The London Chorus, Tiffin Choirs and Farnham Youth Choir, accompanied by the RPO Concert Orchestra and international soloists, Nicky Spence and Lucy Crowe, produced a truly thrilling, heartfelt tribute and adieu to Jeremy’s outstanding leadership and direction.

Advance preparations were well under way long before the season began and as always, Committee members played a vital part in completing a myriad of tasks. For this particular occasion I know everyone will agree we were extremely fortunate to have Gill Backhouse on board as project manager. Gill’s superb management skills and meticulous planning ensured everything flowed smoothly; from the original concept to the final cadence, the entire journey celebrated and acknowledged a unique musical era in the life of the choir.

The challenge of mounting such events involves months of hard work and is a tangible representation of everyone’s dedication and commitment: thank you all for your efforts in making the RAH project and the concert such a triumphant and memorable experience.

Earlier in the season while we were busy preparing for the West End Extravaganza (G-Live, Nov 16) and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle (Holy Trinity Church, March 22), the Committee was also meeting frequently to recruit and appoint a new Music Director. Our advertising campaign resulted in 23 high-calibre applications and after an initial round of eight interviews, a final shortlist of three candidates led to rehearsals with the choir in March. At the subsequent selection committee meeting, Barbara Höfling was unanimously chosen as the most exciting and innovative candidate, and a new era began.

Taking over the Chairman’s role during this busy period has been both a baptism of fire and a privilege. The choir has a very positive can-do, joie de vivre attitude which is fun to be a part of and a great asset for recruitment. I’m indebted to the Committee for their unfailing support, expertise and patience, and I look forward to continuing to work closely with them and with Barbara on many future programmes and initiatives.

## **Trustees’ Report**

The Management Committee (Committee of Trustees) presents the Trustees’ Annual Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 31 August 2025. The accounts have been prepared under the historic cost convention on an accruals basis and are based on the Statement of Recommended Accounting Practice for Charities, as it applies to entities preparing their accounts under the Financial Reporting Standard for Small Entities, and the Charities Act 2011.

## **Objects**

To advance public education and appreciation of choral music in all its aspects in particular by the presentation of public concerts and by other such means as the Committee of the Choir shall determine.

## **The Management Committee**

The management of the Choir is in the hands of a Committee consisting of a minimum of 3 and maximum of 12 trustees.

A Music Director and accompanist is appointed at each AGM. During the year the Music Director was Jeremy Backhouse and Professor Francis Pott was the accompanist.

## **Financial and operating review**

I am pleased to report that the choir made an overall surplus of £18,778 for the financial year which resulted in very healthy year-end reserves of £86,758.

The choir started the year in a good position with £67,981 in reserves transferred from the old charity. This had been built up from past legacies and fundraising.

The cost of running the choir for the year was £35,906. This was almost, but not quite, met by member subscriptions and gift aid. Fundraising ensures we can cover the costs of our Monday night rehearsals.

Vivace Chorus puts on an ambitious and diverse programme of concerts and events with varying degrees of financial success. Generally, our concert programme runs at a loss, which is managed through our policy of holding reserves to cover future years' expenditure. 2024-25 was no different, with the singular exception of the Berlioz concert at the Albert Hall. It is the responsibility of a charity to use its resources to meet its charitable objectives and not to ‘sit on’ reserves, so it is entirely appropriate that we operate in this way.

The big event of the year, the Royal Albert Hall concert, was a financial challenge for the choir. Our solid reserves put us in a position to accept the risk of making a significant loss on this exciting event. Even so, the heroic fundraising efforts over the year were absolutely vital to ensure we could pay bills due in advance of any ticket money.

The concert turned out to be a great financial success, producing a healthy surplus of over £15,000. This would not have been possible without the tireless work of members and generous support through fundraising, sponsorships, and grants.

A note of thanks is due to our generous Patrons and to the late Peter Butterworth, who left a legacy to the choir in his will in 2025.

## **Reserves policy**

It is the policy of the choir to maintain unrestricted funds, which are free reserves of the charity, at a level which underwrites the net cost of the next two years’ concerts, in addition to net management and administration and support costs for those two years. This enables the choir to fund cash flow outlays in

**8 / 23**

**Vivace Chorus**

_Registered Charity No: 1207710_

advance of concerts as well as underwrite potential losses to allow the choir to plan more ambitious programmes.

## **Risk Management**

The officers have examined the major strategic, business and operational risks which the Choir faces and are satisfied that systems have been established to address the identified risks.

## **Public Benefit**

The Committee has paid due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in deciding what activities the charity should undertake. As confirmed by the information contained in this report, the maintenance of a comprehensive website and in other ways, the officers actively demonstrate, on a continuing basis, that the aims of the charity are carried out for the public benefit. The discounted subscriptions of students and discounted concert tickets offered to schools are examples of this.

## **Trustees’ responsibilities in relation to the accounts**

The Charities Act 2011 requires the Trustees to prepare accounts for each financial year, which give a true and fair view of the charity’s financial activities during the year and of its financial position at the end of the year. In preparing these accounts, the officers are required to:

- Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

- State whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any material departure disclosed and explained in the accounts;

- Prepare the accounts on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records, which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Choir, which enable the Trustees to ascertain the financial position of the Choir and to ensure that the accounts comply with the Charities Act. They are responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Approved by the Trustees and signed on their behalf by:
