## **Bewdley Concert Band Annual Report 2024/5**

## **Registration Number 1207702**

Bewdley Concert Band is a community wind band. We have over 40 members drawn locally from Bewdley and also the wider communities of Kidderminster, Bridgnorth, Droitwich and other parts of Worcestershire, Herefordshire the West Midlands. We welcome anyone who can play or is learning to play a wind or percussion instrument. Our ethos has the emphasis on enjoyment and inclusion regardless of ability age sex or gender.

Our main band rehearses generally once a week, during school term times ~~o~~ n a Saturday morning and performs in a large variety of concerts and events during the year. We also have an Academy Band that rehearses after the main band session for new players and also existing players who wish to learn another instrument. Here members are able to gain confidence and progress in a supportive small group environment with no judgment.

## **Management of the Band**

Trustees appointed a hard-working Committee to manage the band, who are all members. The committee were appointed in accordance with the constitution. The committee meet regularly and communicate constantly on WhatsApp to ensure that the band rehearsals and events run smoothly.

The committee is elected each year at an AGM

## **Trustees**

As a new Charity our first Trustees were recruited from the original committee who were all longstanding band and committee members and who care deeply about the growth and continuity of the band. Going forward Trustees will be recruited from the committee or any members that wish to put themselves forward for recruitment. In accordance with the constitution, Trustees will be elected at the AGM. The trustees will continue to appoint a committee to manage the band on behalf of the trustees.

## **Paid Performances and fund-raising events during the past year**

Overall the band has had a successful year. Paid engagements had been difficult to get following the economic crisis but are now becoming more fruitful.

Afternoon park concerts at Riverside Meadows Bandstand Stourport and Brintons Park Kidderminster. _These were paid engagements funded by Wyre Forest District Council ._

Wyre Forest Countryside Show _A paid engagement at a large event._

Band Quiz _A successful and fun fund raising event which combined a traditional quiz night with performances from the band._

Christmas Concert at Wharton Park Golf Club. _Our annual fund-raising concert was as usual a very successful, festive event._

## **Bewdley Concert Band also appeared at**

D Day 80 Anniversary Concert at Bewdley Museum _Supporting Bewdley British Legion_

Stourbridge Park _Free promotional concert to showcase the band_

Bewdley Carnival _Free performance to support our home town_

Severn Valley Railway Engine House Carol Evening _Free appearance to support a valuable local tourist attraction_

## **Recruitment**

We have continued to promote the band during performances at local events and online in order to attract new members. Many new members come straight into the main band and our Academy Band is a valuable safe step into the band for those that are returning to playing or those that have never played as part of a music ensemble.

During the year several new members have joined the band including 2 flautists, 2 trumpeters and1 saxophonist.

## **ACCOUNTS**

The accounts for the financial year ending 31[st] March 2025 are attached and form part of this report.

## **Income**

**Member subs:** We now have 42 paying members

**Paid performances** Our paid performances are continuing to grow. See above

## **Fund raising Concerts and Events**

See above

**Grants** We applied for two grants but we’re unsuccessful this year. We are hoping to gain more grants now that we have Charity Status and continue to look for appropriate ones.

## **Main Spending this Year**

## **Practice Room Hire**

As a large growing band, we need to ensure we have sufficient room to rehearse effectively.

We hire St George’s Hall which is ideal for this purpose. When St George’s Hall is unavailable, we hire The Elim Church.

## **Music**

As a band performing at a large range of events we have continually added to our repertoire. Our library is growing but we continually need to add to it. We have also needed to purchase whole sets of new music for new members.

## **Musical Director**

Our Musical Director is the driving force and a valuable asset to the band. He uses his wide experience to ensure players improve and performance skills continue to grow. At concerts and appearances he acts as an entertaining compere as well as conductor.

Our Musical Director receives a monthly payment for travel expenses.

## **Promotional Materials**

As our band continues to grow, we need ongoing promotional materials to ensure the band is presented in a professional way. Our existing banners were outdated so this year we purchased new roller banners and had newly designed fliers and business

## **Pin Badges**

In preparation for our 15 Year Celebrations the committee purchased commemorative Pin badges for our members as a small thank-you for their service to the band.
