The trustees, who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Charity Object

The object of our charity, as contained in our constitution is:

The advancement of health in the UK and in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in particular, but not exclusively, by providing and facilitating education, training, and mentoring to health workers in the UK and LMICs.

Definitions for this purpose:

Health workers: Doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, administrators, support staff, carers, quality assurance or improvement personnel, volunteers or any other people providing care, supporting the provision of care, or providing education, training or mentoring either within or to hospitals, care centres, the community, health care training establishments, or other locations.

Lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are countries classified by the World Bank as lower income, lower middle income, or upper middle income at the time of HESG’s initial engagement. If HESG engages with an LMIC, support may continue for up to five years of consecutive re-classification as an upper income country.

Providing and facilitating: HESG will directly provide and/or commission education, training and mentoring and/or this will be provided indirectly e.g. the health workers HESG has trained will cascade their knowledge to colleagues. HESG will encourage UK health workers to develop skills and knowledge through their involvement in projects. This will advance UK health care.

Activities

1. The CIO was set up on 28[th] March 2024 to receive a grant of £3,500 from Global Health Partnerships (GHP, formerly THET). The grant was from the GHP Remote International Mentoring Partnership Scheme (RIMPS). It was used to support our “Clinical Educators Development through Mentoring Programme” in Asia. Due to geopolitical instabilities and the remote nature of the programme, we do not know the exact location of all the mentors or mentees. Six regional experts in pre-clinical sciences supported six on the ground doctors who had less up to date academic knowledge of pre-clinical subjects as their focus was on clinical care and teaching. The on the ground doctors were providing face to face teaching of medical students. The remote support of mentors helped the on the ground doctors to understand and teach pre-recorded lectures, through personal support and co-teaching. Mentoring developed in complex networks with co-teaching, mentoring networks, teaching networks, and educational skills development with UK teaching and mentoring. In total, 37 medical students were taught through this project.

A further 11 mentoring pairs were developed directly from this project to support the delivery of other subject areas and to reach other geo-politically isolated medical schools in the region. To support these isolated medical schools, UK doctors and medical students found appropriate open-source online resources for medical students. This encouraged UK health workers to develop skills and knowledge through their involvement in projects.

All mentoring was voluntary. The grant can be used until June 30[th] 2025. Grant expenses so far have been used to manage mentors, mentees, medical students, and learning resources, and on international communication technology. Remaining funds are held over to the next reporting period for a volunteer mentor/educator (who is not on the board) visiting Asia to meet with and support mentors, to finalise curriculum development, to build regional relationships, to foster good patient care through contextually appropriate clinical education, and to deliver a keynote address on the teaching of clinical reasoning which supports patient care.

1. Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with UNISBA (Universitas Islam Bandung, Indonesia) to promote and develop educational and other initiatives that will benefit patient care. No financial implications for HESG in this reporting period.

2. Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd). The purpose of the collaboration is to work in partnership with colleagues in various countries to build stronger, more resilient, health systems and to make progress towards universal health coverage (UHC) through improved health service performance for poor and vulnerable populations. HESG delivers project activities under a GHP grant, whilst RCSEd provides overall project and financial governance. No financial implications for HESG in this reporting period.

Future plans

In order to further our charitable objects without relying exclusively on grant applications we plan to undertake the following:

• Register for gift aid

• Provide Training of Clinical Educator courses in the UK. These will support our charitable objects by providing UK clinicians with better educational skills so that they can support colleagues in patient care. These educational skills should improve the retention and resilience of clinicians. In addition, they will be offered opportunities to engage in our international projects. Participants will be pay for these courses so that health workers in lower and lower-middle income countries can have cost free access

• Provide cost-free training of clinical educators to health workers in lower-middle income countries.

• Continue re-accreditation of our training of clinical educators courses (AoME and RCSEd Faculty of Surgical Trainers) to PGCert and PGDip level and apply for accreditation to masters level

• Our governance policies are currently in line with RCSEd but we plan to review policies independantly

Governance

All three trustees are doctors on the GMC register, although two have retired from clinical practice so are no longer on the performers list. We aim expand the board of trustees, which is the same as the company directors, to around five members. Should the CIO be wound up the constitution states that If the CIO is wound up, each member of the CIO is liable to contribute to the assets of the CIO such amount (but not more than £10) as may be required for payment of the debts and liabilities of the CIO contracted before that person ceases to be a member, for payment of the costs, charges and expenses of winding up, and for adjustment of the rights of the contributing members among themselves
