THE WYNN TRUST
Charity Number: 1207621
Registered Address: 46 Pickhurst Park, Bromley, Kent BR2 0TW Trustees: Paul Taylor, Danny Carr, Tom Cornish Financial Year Ending: 24 March 2025
Introduction
The Wynn Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registered with the Charity Commission on 26 March 2024. It was established to provide assistance and support to boxers who have suffered brain injuries, inspired by the experiences of our friend and beneficiary Charlie Wynn, who sustained a catastrophic brain injury six years ago during sparring. Our governing document is a CIO Foundation model, and the charity is managed by its trustees in accordance with this framework. Trustees are appointed based on their relevant experience, skills, and commitment to the cause, with recruitment conducted through personal networks and recommendations within the boxing and charity communities. Our charitable objects, as defined in our governing document, are: "For the public benefit, the relief of those in need by reason of ill-health having suffered a brain injury as a result of boxing throughout England and Wales, by the provision of grants to support rehabilitation, therapy, and related needs."
Objectives and Activities
The Wynn Trust aims to raise funds and awareness to help boxers affected by brain injuries reclaim their quality of life through financial aid, rehabilitation programs, and preventative measures. Our activities focus on:
• Fundraising through sponsored events such as runs, walks, marathons, and ultra challenges.
• Providing direct support to beneficiaries, including therapy sessions, meal plans, and equipment.
• Promoting awareness of brain injury risks in boxing and distributing protective gear to amateur boxers.
In our first year, we organized and participated in various events to build momentum and generate funds. These included monthly train
station runs evolving into "walk and talk" sessions with beneficiary Charlie Wynn, who is currently wheelchair-bound but progressing through intensive rehab and physiotherapy programs aimed at improving his physical and mental well-being. We also supported participants in major events such as the Brighton Marathon (with 30 runners raising over £27,000), London Marathon, Ibiza challenges, numerous half marathons, and a massive 100km ultra challenge in Scotland. Additional activities involved quiz nights and community outreach to engage supporters.
Achievements and Performance
Starting with just one beneficiary, Charlie Wynn, we expanded our reach to support additional individuals facing similar challenges. Key achievements include:
• Supporting Charlie Wynn through his ongoing intensive rehabilitation program, which includes regular "walk and talk" sessions to foster community, emotional support, and mental health. Charlie, who remains wheelchair-bound six years after his severe brain injury, has shown resilience and progress in his mindset and daily functioning through dedicated support. We have funded and are commencing a new psychotherapy program alongside his existing physiotherapy. This psychotherapy initiative, starting soon, will focus on addressing the psychological and emotional impacts of his brain injury, including cognitive, emotional, and adjustment challenges. It complements his intensive physiotherapy (provided in collaboration with specialist providers like VIM Health, incorporating neurological physiotherapy, robotic-assisted therapies, and other neurorehabilitation services) to holistically support his physical recovery, mental resilience, and overall frame of mind. These combined therapies aim to enhance
independence, quality of life, and emotional well-being, with goals tailored to Charlie's needs.
• Assisting Nick Blackwell, a brain injury survivor and former British middleweight champion, by increasing his holistic massage therapy sessions from every six weeks to monthly, committing to this for the next year. We also provided a tailored meal plan to aid his weight management.
• Partnering with Michael Watson, another renowned brain injury survivor, to deliver a meal plan and exploring further support options for his ongoing needs.
• Implementing preventative measures by investing in and distributing 30 headguards to amateur boxers in need, replacing wornout equipment to enhance safety and reduce injury risks. These efforts have not only provided tangible support but also raised awareness about brain injuries in boxing. Through social media platforms (including X
@thewynntrust
, Instagram, and Facebook), our website (thewynntrust.com), and partnerships like Run for Charity and JustGiving, we connected with the community, sharing stories of resilience from beneficiaries like Charlie, Nick, and Michael. Events such as the Littlehampton 10K and planned kids' charity runs in Normans Park, Bromley, further amplified our message and fostered community spirit.
Our fundraising platforms, including JustGiving, have been instrumental in collecting donations, with highlights like the Brighton Marathon team effort demonstrating strong public engagement.
