Report of the Trustees
of ‘The Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield Unit 42 of the Sea Cadet Corps’
The Charity Trustees present their report together with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 2024-2026 . The financial statements comply with both the Charity’s Constitution and the Charities Act 2011.
Aim of the Sea Cadet Corps
The aim of the Sea Cadets Corps is to give young people the best possible head start in life, through nautical adventure and fun.
Charitable Purpose
The charitable purpose of the Unit is to promote the development of young people in achieving their physical, intellectual and social potential as individuals and as responsible citizens. This is achieved by the provision of education and leisure time activities using a nautical theme, based on the traditions of the Royal Navy and in accordance with the principles, ethos and practices of the Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC).
In furtherance of the Purpose, the Unit offers young people a structured environment in which to develop; provides access to education and training including sailing, rowing, windsurfing, paddle sports, powerboating, seamanship, navigation, marine engineering, cooking, music, first aid, drill, piping, and public services. It provides opportunities for young people to obtain a range of qualifications and a wide range of opportunities for community involvement.
Public Benefit
The trustees continue to give regard to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit ‘Charities and Public Benefit’ provided by the Unit in relation to the charitable purpose of the Sea Cadets movement as set out in the activities and achievements as outlined in this report.
To achieve its aim the Unit encourages recruitment of young people from all backgrounds and abilities including where possible, and within the realms of Health and Safety, those with disabilities, and develops their skills and abilities by:

Regular structured activities with a nautical theme,

Enabling young people to take part in activities connected with the wider Sea Cadet Corps,

Movement such as waterborne activities, events and competitions at district, area and national levels,

Availability of formal achievements whilst completing courses to earn badges and promotions, and qualification

Trustee’s Reports
As Chairman, I am pleased to present my report for the 2024–2025 year and to reflect on the progress made by Sutton Coldfield Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets during this period.
Throughout the year, the unit has continued to demonstrate its strong commitment to developing young people through a broad and engaging programme of activities. The dedication shown by both cadets and volunteers has ensured that opportunities remain varied, inclusive, and of a consistently high standard, supporting personal development, teamwork, and community engagement.
Community Engagement and Profile
The unit’s increasing involvement in community activities has been a notable success this year. Participation in local events has helped to raise the profile of Sutton Coldfield Sea Cadets within the community and has strengthened relationships with local organisation and residents. These activities have provided cadets with valuable opportunities to represent the unit publicly and to demonstrate the values, skills, and discipline that the Sea Cadet experience promotes.
Training, Development and Retention
From a governance perspective, it is encouraging to see continued progress in training delivery, including an increase in boating activity and strong engagement across all sections. Cadet retention remains high, reflecting the positive environment created within the unit and the quality of the program being delivered. These outcomes provide reassurance that the unit is meeting its charitable objectives effectively.
The committee recognises the importance of continuing to support a diverse and accessible program, particularly in enabling more Junior Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets to access activities from the outset of the training year.
Sections and Cadet Experience
Across all sections, cadets have benefited from a balanced mix of in-unit training, external activities, and practical experiences. The committee is encouraged by the consistent standards being maintained and the positive contribution made by cadets across unit life and community engagement. This breadth of opportunity is central to delivering a rewarding and impactful cadet experience.
Fundraising and Financial Support
Fundraising activity during the year has been strong, with a notable unit-wide effort demonstrating excellent teamwork and collective commitment. The funds raised will play an important role in supporting training, activities, and the ongoing development of facilities, helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of the unit.
Facilities and Volunteer Support
The committee acknowledges the challenges faced during the year in relation to facilities and maintenance. Despite these pressures, the commitment of the volunteer team has remained exceptionally high. The willingness of volunteers and supporters to contribute their time and skills has been vital in maintaining momentum and ensuring that cadet activities continue to run successfully.

Standards and Assurance
The outcomes of the Unit Review provide clear assurance that Sutton Coldfield Sea Cadets continues to operate to a high standard. The score achieved and the continued award of a Burgee reflect the consistent professionalism, dedication, and hard work of both cadets and volunteers, and the strong culture embedded within the unit.
Looking Ahead
Looking forward, the committee’s priorities include supporting the recruitment, training, and integration of new volunteers, alongside maintaining high standards of governance and oversight. These priorities are essential to sustaining growth, managing future challenges, and ensuring that the unit continues to deliver high-quality opportunities for young people.

Statement from the Commanding Officer
It has been a privilege to serve as the Officer in Charge of Sutton Coldfield Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets. Over this period, we have seen great progress, with both cadets and staff actively engaging in a wide variety of activities that reflect our commitment to developing young people and enhancing their skills, discipline, and community spirit.
Community Engagement and Profile: One of the highlights of this period has been the increased participation in community activities. Our unit has been involved in numerous local events that have significantly raised our profile within Sutton Coldfield. This has strengthened our relationship with the local community and showcased the values and skills that our cadets represent.
Key achievements include:

Achievement of one Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet appointment

Achievement of one Mayor’s Cadet appointment
Training, Development and Boating: In terms of training and development, I am proud to report a slight increase in the number of boating hours achieved this year. This is a testament to the dedication of both cadets and staff, who have invested considerable time and effort into delivering a robust and comprehensive training program.
Looking ahead, our boating season can be more diverse from the start, enabling more Royal Marines Cadets (RMC) and Junior Sea Cadets (JSC) to be afloat at the beginning of the season.
Our cadet retention rates remain high, demonstrating the positive impact of our programs and the supportive environment we have cultivated.

Our Junior Sea Cadets have benefited from several local visits, providing valuable hands-on experiences that complement their in-unit training.

Sea Cadet Corps (SCC):
Our Sea Cadets have continued to engage strongly in unit life, contributing positively across training and community activity. The unit has maintained high standards and strong participation, supporting our overall delivery of a consistent and rewarding Sea Cadet experience.
Royal Marines Cadets (RMC):
Our Royal Marines Cadets have made full use of the natural resources in Sutton Park for training exercises, effectively utilising the park’s terrain to enhance their skills and preparedness. hrough community engagement and expanded online presence we have seen an increase in cadet enrolment and, more importantly, higher retention rates. We have built a strong sense of belonging and commitment within our unit.
Fundraising: A unit fundraising effort in August saw all sections represented and raised almost £3,000, demonstrating excellent teamwork and strong support for the unit’s continued development.
Facilities and Volunteer Commitment: We have faced challenges related to resources, including funding, equipment, and facilities. These limitations have required creative solutions which has led to the unit’s ambition to rebuild in order to provide the best experience for our cadets.
Priorities for the Year Ahead: Looking ahead, one of our key priorities is the training and integration of new volunteers. Training plans are being put in place to ensure new team members are fully equipped to contribute effectively and continue to uphold the high standards of the unit.
Closing Remarks and Thanks: I am immensely proud of what we have achieved so far and remain committed to building on these successes in the months and years ahead. Together, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of young people and strengthening the presence of the Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets in our community.
