FOR THE PERIOD ENDED 18 MARCH 2025

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the Period ended 18 March 2025.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements and comply with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011, FRS 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Charities SORP "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)".

Objectives and activities

Our Parish is aimed to spread the Christian Orthodox Faith among Ukrainian speaking community in London. It is supposed to be done through the running of ongoing canonical services in accordance with the Order of Great Church of Constantinople. Our Parish has also in task to help in all feasible manner to those who are in need among Ukrainian speaking community here in London and back in Ukraine.

Public benefit

The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake.

Activities

After the big invasion of Russia into Ukraine in February 2022 the number of Ukrainian refugees in the UK increased significantly from 40K in 2021 to 217K in 2024 (as per The Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford). This is why now the third year in a row the objective of our Parish is to support our fellow citizens from Ukraine here in the UK and back in Ukraine with means of both non-monetary and monetary support.

As a Christian Orthodox parish, we keep in focus prayer support to our parishioners and guests, including those who just recently have arrived. During our regular services we keep on praying for those who were affected by the war and had to flea and leave their homes and for those who had to stay and defend their homeland and families on the front. Our Parish also provides information assistance via sharing appeals for help for Ukrainians affected by war through social media sources where we are present (Website, Facebook, Instagram, Viber & Telegram groups).

Our Parish also responds the calls for help from our fellow Ukrainians via gathering means for humanitarian support like medicines and children care goods. With this on purpose we organise charity events for example in format of “Ukrainian songs evening” where the purpose and destination are clearly stated to our parishioners and guests.

Separate objective of our Parish activity is caring of our little parishioners. We try to introduce and familiarise them with Christian orthodox traditions of pysankarstvo (eggs’ colouring) and shopka creation (3D model of the cave of Bethlehem with the puppets inside), which are well-spread in Ukraine.

In general, all activities of “The Orthodox Ukrainian Parish of Protection of the Mother of God” starting from ongoing canonical services which are run in Ukrainian language to special events like theatre performances and musical evenings convey Ukrainian national character and traditions. This is to help our fellow Ukrainians to feel themselves at home and our non-Ukrainian guests to get in touch with Ukrainian culture and identity.

Achievements and performance

Worship and prayer

“The Orthodox Ukrainian Parish of Protection of the Mother of God” follows the weekly and annual cycles of worships in accordance to the canonical Order of the Great Church of Constantinople. The occurrence of services, however, is a subject of the church venue availability, which is kindly provided to us for hiring by the Holy Sepulchre Church (Holborn Viaduct, City of London, London EC1A 2DQ). The core of the weekly worship cycle is Sunday Service, which includes three main parts, i.e. the Sacrament of confession, the Hours, and the Divine Liturgy. Since March 2024 there were 45 Sunday Services conducted. On top of that 6 Saturday Memorial Services were run since memory of the deceased occupies the important place in the Christian orthodox practice.

In accordance with the Christian orthodox annual cycle of worships there were a number of special religion services conducted on weekdays:

Just like Sunday service is a key for the weekly cycle of worships, the Easter is the central feast for the annual worship cycle in the Orthodox Christianity. It composes its own series of special Easter services, which were conducted by our parish:

Easter plays an exceptional role not only for the regular parishioners but to the wider circle of Ukrainian community. Some people visit church services only once per year exactly on Easter feast. Thus, during peak East service our parish welcome more than 1000 people at the background of about 40-50 people during regular Sunday services. Our responsibility as a Christian parish is to give opportunity to these people not only to follow the traditions but also to get closer to God at least once per year.

Christmas is another important feast in the Orthodox Christianity, which special worships our parish accompanied with traditional Ukrainian songs kolyadky and traditional Ukrainian theatre performance vertep:

Our church also celebrates its own feast on October 14[th ] each year, the date when our community was founded. For us it is an opportunity to summarise the last year activities and thank to God for keeping our community safe and growing. We started our way on October 14, 2021 with 10 people in the community, and now we have up to 50 people regularly visiting our Sunday and weekday services and taking active part in the life of our charity organisation. This year we celebrated our feast on October 13th with regular Sunday Service and the special Charity Evening of "Ukrainian rebellious Songs". This charity evening was called so because this date we also mark the day of Cossacks and all Ukrainian warriors who used to fight and keep on doing it today for the freedom and independence of our Motherland. We treated our parishioners and guests with Cossack kulish (traditional Ukrainian stew), and our professional choir welcome everyone with special Ukrainian songs.

In time when our home country goes through historical challenges and fights for its survival, we feel responsible to run activities which correlate with ongoing non-religious events and comfort our parishioners and our guests with words of support during our special occasion services:

Within last year our church organised series of charity activities targeted to educate and engage our little parishioners into the Ukrainian traditions:

Pastoral Care, Mission and Evangelism

For the second time since our parish foundation, we organised the pilgrimage. This time it took place to the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Essex. 17 of our parishioners with their families participated in this activity which is quite traditional in the orthodox Christianity.

Our parish tries to accompany all important milestones in the life of our parishioners. Thus, within last year our priest father Myroslav ran more than 12 christening and 8 blessing ceremonies for wedding.

Ecumenical Relationships

On February 17[th] we held an unprecedented event in our parish. We had the conjoint Sunday Liturgy which was led by the Kherson-Kachovka episcope together with father Myroslav and 10 chaplains who run their ongoing service right on the front line back in Ukraine. As a special guest we also had father Nick, the head of the Holy Sepulchre Church, which venue we are hiring at the moment.

Financial review

Total unrestricted funds made £23,963. Donations from parishioners were the only source for the unrestricted funds. These donations were done either during regular Sunday services, or during weddings and baptism services, which were conducted on the request of our parishioners.

Total expenditures made £18,628. The absolute biggest part of it, i.e. £13,849 was allocated to the rent of church venue, where the regular services were run. The next biggest expenditure was the cost of logotype design and visual assets for our parish, which later were officially registered as a trademark. All this together made £2,270. This year we also made some investments to facilitate the online broadcasting of our regular Sunday services and noncash donations from our parishioners. All this made £1,237 and included: the cost of video camera, and microphone, the expenses for church mobile phone and card reader. The rest of the expense items were payments for the church candles and Eucharistic wine, for stationery and travel cost etc., which all in sum made £852. On top of that £420 are due to be paid for the service of preparing the Accounts reporting.

The net result for the year was an excess of income from donations over payments by £5,335.

Reserves policy

It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be maintained at a level equivalent to between three and six month’s expenditure. The trustees consider that reserves at this level will ensure that, in the event of a significant drop in funding, they will be able to continue the charity’s current activities while consideration is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised. This level of reserves has been maintained throughout the Period.

Structure, governance and management

The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered in England and Wales.

“The Orthodox Ukrainian Parish of Protection of the Mother of God” was registered by the Charity Commission on March 18[th] , 2024 with the registration number #1207480 at the following address Mortlake House, Flat 1, 512 Chiswick High Road, London W4 5RH with the regular services being run at the rented church venue of Holy Sepulchre Church at the Holborn Viaduct, City of London, London EC1A 2DQ.

Recruitment and appointment of trustees

None of the trustees has any beneficial interest in the company. All of the trustees are members of the company and guarantee to contribute £1 in the event of a winding up.

On September 29th, 2024, there was a General Meeting held, where it was decided to extend the governance of our parish to the members. The following parishioners took the decision to become the members of our charity organisation, take an active part in life of our community and to become a pool for future trustees’ recruitment:

In order to assist you to fulfil your duties under the Charities Act 2011, we have prepared for your approval the financial statements of The Orthodox Ukrainian Parish of Protection of the Mother of God for the Period ended 18 March 2025, which comprise the statement of financial activities and the related notes from the charity’s accounting records and from information and explanations you have given us.

As a practising member firm of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, we are subject to its ethical and other professional requirements which are detailed at https://www.icaew.com/regulation.

This report is made to the charity's trustees, as a body, in accordance with the terms of our engagement letter dated 20 May 2024. Our work has been undertaken solely to prepare for your approval the financial statements of The Orthodox Ukrainian Parish of Protection of the Mother of God and state those matters that we have agreed to state to the charity's trustees, as a body, in this report in accordance with ICAEW Technical Release 07/16 AAF. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than The Orthodox Ukrainian Parish of Protection of the Mother of God and the charity's trustees as a body, for our work or for this report.

It is your duty to ensure that The Orthodox Ukrainian Parish of Protection of the Mother of God has kept adequate accounting records and to prepare statutory financial statements that give a true and fair view of the assets, liabilities, financial position and surplus of The Orthodox Ukrainian Parish of Protection of the Mother of God. 1 Accounting policies

Charity information

The Orthodox Ukrainian Parish of Protection of the Mother of God is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered in England and Wales.

1.1 Accounting convention

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011, FRS 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Charities SORP "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)". The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities not to prepare a statement of cash flows.

The financial statements have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a true and fair view. This departure has involved following the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities applying FRS 102 rather than the version of the Statement of Recommended Practice which is referred to in the Regulations but which has since been withdrawn.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.

1.2 Going concern

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

1.3 Charitable funds

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives.

Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors or grantors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.

Endowment funds are subject to specific conditions by donors that the capital must be maintained by the charity.

1.4 Income

Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.

Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise if the charity has been notified of an impending distribution, the amount is known, and receipt is expected. If the amount is not known, the legacy is treated as a contingent asset.

1.5 Expenditure

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges are allocated on the portion of the asset’s use.

1.6 Cash and cash equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities.

Basic financial assets

Basic financial assets, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortised.

Basic financial liabilities

Basic financial liabilities, including creditors and bank loans are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortised.

Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost, using the effective interest rate method.

Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of operations from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

Derecognition of financial liabilities

Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity’s contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.

1.7 Employee benefits

The cost of any unused holiday entitlement is recognised in the period in which the employee’s services are received.

Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the charity is demonstrably committed to terminate the employment of an employee or to provide termination benefits.
