Mold Plastic Reduction Annual Report, 15[th] March 2024 to 31[st] March 2025

Mold Plastic Reduction (MPR) was registered as a charity on 15[th] March 2024, number 1207470, so this is the first Annual Report (to 31[st] March 2025).

MPR’s activities are organised by a Steering Group (SG) consisting of five core members and up to three additional members who fulfil specific tasks for the SG. The Steering Group held five meetings during the year:

9[th] April 2024 3[rd] July 2024 31[st] July 2024 4[th] September 2024

This report demonstrates MPR’s work toward its objectives:

“To promote for the benefit of the public the conservation protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment in Mold and the surrounding areas, primarily but not exclusively through:

Regarding (a), MPR has through the period covered by this report been researching the feasibility of a returnable cup scheme for coffee shops in and around Mold. The project involves coffee shops in the scheme receiving supplies of a branded cup which can be taken away by customers on payment of a small deposit, with the deposit redeemable at any participating outlet in the area. Public opinion on the project was sought at the Mold Food & Drink Festival on 14[th] -15[th] September 2024 via a survey conducted in person and online. The survey showed clearly that members of the public favoured a deposit scheme over a membership scheme by a majority of 2-1. The Festival drew thousands of people and therefore represented a high profile for MPR regardless of whether or not individuals took part in the survey – thus also contributing to (b) under MPR’s objectives.

Additional activities that fulfilled (b) under MPR’s objectives included

Mold Spring Clean was co-organised by Mold Town Council, MPR, and Keep Wales Tidy. Essentially a town-wide litter-pick, considerable pre-event publicity featured MPR’s involvement, which concentrated on separating recyclable and non-re-cyclable materials. The recyclable plastic was counted and some of it was washed so that it could be heated and put through an extruder to convert the material into flower pots, other receptacles, and ornaments. This process was done in Daniel Owen Square, the largest public gathering area in Mold, demonstrating both the necessity to wash plastic before it is put in the domestic recycling bin and the way in which used plastic can be re-

purposed. 65 individuals including 17 children under supervision collected. 101 bags of rubbish were collected, of which 27 bags consisted of recyclables.

MPR organised online hustings for the Parliamentary Election, on 18[th] June 2024, expressly on the topic of candidates’ policies regarding singe use plastic and the disposal of plastics. Although the online audience was comparatively small, the event served to focus local candidates’ attention and afforded an opportunity for them to be quizzed by participants.

The stall at the Carnival featured various craft activities designed to engage children and young people, plus a quiz where people could guess the number of pieces in a dis-assembled plastic interactive toy.

Outside Lives is a local organisation that blends environmental programmes with people-centred services focussed on those facing living challenges in society. The three ‘pop-ups’ in which MPR took part, together with their themes, were:

Initiatives fulfilling (c) among MPR’s objectives include the events listed in this report plus MPR’s website, which features a large number of ‘hacks’ (ideas and tips to make the reduction in use of plastic easier); MPR’s Facebook page (with 1800+ followers), which acts as a forum for the discussion of plastic reduction issues; and MPR’s Instagram account (709 following).
