The trustees are pleased to present the first annual report of The Tamarin Trust CIO.
**OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
## **OBJECTIVES**
The conservation, protection and improvement of the natural environment and in particular the conservation of endangered primates including marmosets and tamarins by providing funding and resources necessary to support wildlife conservation projects.
## **ACTIVITIES**
The period of this report covers the first partial year of the Trust from its foundation on 15[th] March 2024 to the reporting period end on 31[st] January 2025.
We feel that the Trust has got off to a strong start. In the approximately 10 months covered we have:
- Registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales as a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation).
- Appointed founding trustees and expanded the board of trustees.
- Set up current and saving bank accounts.
- Created a website with donation options, an online shop and a large amount of content on our work and other relevant conservation news.
- Created a Facebook Page, YouTube channel and LinkedIn account.
- Issued 2 newsletters to supporters.
- Started fund raising, with the year 1 target already reached.
- Provided funding for several projects, more details of which can be found later in this report.
Funds have been raised mostly through individual donations with some coming from the proceeds of the online shop and one contribution from a charitable foundation.
Activities supported to further our objectives included:
- Purchase of camera traps for Mountain Marmoset research.
- Funding to BioBrasil in support of Tamarin preservation fieldwork.
- Help to organise and fund a workshop on Callitrichid husbandry and conservation..
- Covering a gap in funding for the Head Keeper at the Mountain Marmoset centre.
- Funding of publicity for Tamarin conservation plans in Brazil.
The trustees confirm that they have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit when making decisions during the report period.
## **POLICIES**
During this period anti corruption and bribery, and anti money laundering policies were drawn up and documented based on UK standards. In addition guidelines for acceptance of donations and disbursement of funds were established.
## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE** .
## **FOUNDATION**
The initial work of setting up the Tamarin Trust was carried out by the founder trustees; Dominic Wormell, Eluned Price and Liam Lynch. This included deciding on the structure of the trust, agreeing objectives, registration with the Charity Commission of England and Wales, drawing up policies and procedures, building a website, obtaining a bank account, setting up facilities to accept donations and other essential tasks for a new charity.
## **DEVELOPMENT**
Soon after the foundation steps were completed, the trust began to receive funds and plan the first contributions to projects. During this period, new trustees were recruited and an online shop set up to supplement other fund raising methods. A newsletter subscription facility was established in order to start building links with supporters.
## **PROJECTS SUPPORTED**
## **MOUNTAIN MARMOSET CONSERVATION PROGRAMME**
Tamarin Trust funded camera traps for vital survey work on the buffytufted-ear marmoset being carried out by Rodrigo de Carvalho , founder of the Mountain Marmosets Conservation Programme, around the city of Teresopolis. The traps will be regularly monitored so that Rodrigo can find out where these endangered marmosets still survive, and if any non-native marmosets, which might compete with the buffy-tufted-ear marmosets for food, or hybridise with them, have moved in.
The trust was also able to help out the centre by covering the Head Keepers salary for two months while a long term source of funds was found. As a small charity we are able to respond quickly in these type of situations..

## **PIED TAMARIN WORKSHOPS**
In November 2024 the Tamarin Trust’s Dom Wormell co-led a workshop in Manaus with ICMBio ( _Government agency for species conservation_ ) focused on the care of rescued pied tamarins in the city, the workshop was based at the university.
The work shop covered all aspects of husbandry and also worked on designs for new enclosures and a new centre which will hopefully be built in the near future.
The trust also paid expenses and a small fee to Gale Glendewar who led some of the workshops. Gale has 20 years experience of working with Pied Tamarins.

## **GOLDEN HEADED LION TAMARIN**
We provided funding for important field equipment for the golden-headed lion tamarin in the Brazilian state of Bahia. Dom Wormell sits on the advisory committee for lion tamarin conservation within Europe. This species of lion tamarin – a close relative of black and golden lion tamarins – is facing ever increasing threats as cattle ranching eats into forested areas. Biobrasil are coordinating the work to protect this beautiful tamarin.

**FUTURE PLANS**
In the short term we have a few projects lined up.
- Callitrichid workshop in Belem
- Purchase of a 4x4 vehicle for the Mountain Marmoset Conservation Programme.
In the longer term we hope to develop the trusts activities to begin to drive research and initiate projects in addition to supporting existing projects and organisations. These are likely to be multi year large scale projects if funding allows. At time of writing two ideas in particular are being considered:
- Development of a ‘species hub’ concept for Pied Tamarins in Manaus combining animal rescue, conservation, education and research.
- Rescue and reconnect endangered populations of Buffy Tufted Ear Marmosets in Sao Jose dos Campos, and prepare the ground for a possible re-introduction to a reserve in the Serra Negra da Mantiqueira mountains
## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
## **INCOME / EXPENDITURE**
Income for the period covered was £23,292 and expenditure £11,387.
The majority of income was from individual donors with one significant contribution from a charitable trust. Some income was also generated by our online shop.
Almost all expenditure was on projects with minor expenses for bank fees, web hosting etc.
## **RESERVES POLICY**
The trustees aim to keep a general fund to allow for some flexibility in the event of cost overruns for supported projects and to have the ability to react quickly to urgent requests.
The initial target was to have a reserve of £5,000 which was achieved by the end of the reporting period.
The reserve plus any other funds not immediately needed are kept in a savings account which provides financial security and allows instant access.
## **DONATIONS RECEIVED POLICY**
The Tamarin Trust has written guidelines on donations to ensure that appropriate scrutiny of the source of funds is undertaken. In particular the Trust will not allow its name and reputation to be used for ‘greenwashing’ or similar purposes.
## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT.**
## **GOVERNING DOCUMENT**
The governing document is the Tamarin Trust CIO Foundation charter. Version 1 was registered with the Charity Commission on 15 March 2024. The current version is 3, registered on 11 September 2024.
The Tamarin Trust is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation whose only voting members are its charity trustees.
## **TRUSTEES**
The governing document defines the number of trustees and the duration of their tenure.
There is a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 10 trustees. The standard term is 3 years, with the exception of the founding trustees as follows:

The trustees have the power to elect new trustees having regard to the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the CIO.
The appointment of new trustees, and other significant decisions affecting the Trust, are made at Trustee Board meetings and documented in the meeting minutes.
All trustees receive the Foundation charter, Charity Commission guides for Trustees and the Tamarin Trust policy and procedures document.
**ORGANISATION** .
The Trustees work on a voluntary basis and hold meetings every 1 to 2 months to review progress and take decisions.
The Tamarin Trust had no paid employees as of the end of the report period
