## **Kilham Village Hall AGM 17[th] February 2026** ## **Chair’s Report for period February 2025-January 2026** ## **Summary of achievements** In August the **memorial Bench** for Jean Wilson was installed to the front of the hall and at the same time we used reserves to replace the wooden ramp to the rear fire exit, with a wider, much safer **concrete ramp** , addressing our second highest risk on our risk register. The highest risk on our risk register was the old stage, both in terms of its safe erection, but also when stored away. It was also very heavy requiring a minimum of four people. In September a **new stage** was purchased from reserves, and the old stage recycled. The new stage is lightweight but robust, easy to handle and erect, and stores safely in the locked storeroom. Nigel Rowlands was employed one day per month over summer to **maintain the grounds** , including clearing fallen leaves. Garden waste was then kindly taken to Driffield tip by Phil Gilmartin in his car. In January 2026, Nigel cleared a pathway in the snow to the hall and cleared the steps, gritting to maintain access during the worst of the January snow, but the bad weather resulted in many regular bookings being cancelled. ## **Grants** In July the East Riding of Yorkshire Council announced a new funding round under its “Do It for East Yorkshire” banner, and the remit matched one of our priority objectives of **upgrading the kitchen facilities** . Our application was strengthened by collaborating with Kilham Playing Fields Association who needed more capacity for three events they were planning over the winter months, and they also provided a case study as part of the post grant reporting requirements. The award of around £6,000 was notified in Autumn and we were able to have the new facilities installed in time for the KPFA events. The upgrade also addressed one of the risks identified on our risk assessment, with the boiler now moved to a safer location, it reduced the need to bring pre-warmed food from home, and the counter-top access has been blocked to avoid unexpected ingress, especially by small children, into the cooking area. Post award reporting will be completed by the end of January. In September Northern Power announced a funding opportunity with a short deadline, but we were able to use much of the work already done for the previous, unsuccessful solar application, and in late December we were notified of our success, with around £14,500 granted to **install solar panels and storage batteries** . Work is scheduled to start in February. Huge thanks to Chris Jessop for his work on this grant. ## **Activities** The year started with a sketch show “From Here to Absurdity” which was held on 21[st] February, followed by the Spring Craft Fair on 12[th] April, and a Jazz night on 6[th] June, although the latter only had an audience of 27 which was disappointing. We had planned a series of 4 different adult learning courses over the summer, but with limited uptake, only the air fryer sessions went ahead, and on minimum numbers. Committee-organised activities resumed on 25[th] October with a Bad Apple Theatre production, and on 15[th] November the Christmas Craft Fair. These activities run by committee members are onerous to organise, and live performances are not well attended. Therefore, more support is needed, or the number of fundraising events organised by committee members will have to be reduced. The Christmas craft fair is our most successful event for fund-raising and a special thank you to Carol Jessop, as overall event manager, and to volunteers in the kitchen team, for making it such a success. ## **Trustees and supporters** Nigel and Vanda Rowlands stepped down as Caretaker and H&S Officer respectively at the 2025 AGM, and we have yet to fill the Caretaker role. However, the H&S Officer responsibilities have been split into the Fire Officer role, now held by Tim Marshall, and the H&S Officer role held by Katie Tanner. Our grateful thanks to Tim and Katie for stepping forward. As indicated earlier, Nigel was engaged one day per month over the summer to maintain the garden areas, but we are very keen to appoint a new committee member as Caretaker, in addition to paid maintenance work where professionals are employed. I take this opportunity to thank Glyn Wilson, who is stepping down this year following 4 years in the role of Minutes Secretary. This is a key role, and Glyn has been diligent and amazing at turning 90 minutes of discussion into a neat, clear and concise record. Thank you so much. The committee is therefore seeking a new Minutes Secretary as a matter of urgency. We continue to rely heavily on the happy to help group and hope to expand this essential additional support network. ## **Plans 2026/2027** The kitchen upgrade will hopefully lead to an increase in bookings, and the new stage will enable live performances without the onerous addition of needing to construct and dismantle the old stage. The solar panels will help reduce energy costs, and I am satisfied that we have a safe, well maintained and fit for purpose village hall. It is one of the best, if not the best, in the East Riding, but I may be bias. 2027 will see the 800-year centenary of the Royal Charter for Kilham Village to hold a Fair on the green. I would like to think this remains on the agenda and there will be strong support for some form of recognition, which will no doubt involve the village hall. The only remaining upgrade on our original wish-list is the toilet block. In addition, we have mentioned in recent grant applications that we would like to move away from fossil fuel completely and perhaps install an EV charging point. These are all subject to the availability and success of grants and will be for the next Chair to oversee with appropriate support. ## **Thank you** As notified to the committee in early January, I am standing down from the committee at the February 2026 AGM, after 4 years in the role of Chair. I am proud of what we have achieved as a team in those years and thank all committee members and happy to help group member for the part they played in that success.
