The Trustees present their report with the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2024 which are set out on the annexed pages.
## **Objectives and Policies**
## **The Objectives of the Charity are to:**
As our first year as a registered Charity in the UK, we continue to seek to live up to our purposes, that being to:
Promote the advancement of animal welfare and animal rights through the raising of funds to financially support Syros Cats Greece and other similar charitable organisations in Greece which undertake the practical care of the animals in question.
Where practical and affordable, seek help in the provision of educational projects to inform the public on animal welfare and rights and campaigning for better animal welfare rights and to assist in raising such funds.
By raising awareness of the need for better animal welfare as well as advancing the cause of animal rights in Syros and financially assisting those groups who are practicably providing such welfare and promoting such rights the wider public will benefit from greater knowledge, improved empathy in society, cats being available for adoption and cleaner habitats for the public in general.
## **Review of past activities & future developments**
During 2024, Syros Cats UK help fund the sterilisation of a total of 173 cats, many through the Syros Cats Greece ‘trap, neuter and release’ (CNR) programme.
With the help of Syros Cats Greece volunteers, sponsors and visitors, 32 kittens and adult cats where rehomed to Switzerland, UK, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and the USA. We are very grateful to the adopters and everyone who helped these cats find their forever homes.
Sadly, eleven of the cats looked after by Syros Cats Greece died. Six from old age, three from road accidents (as strays, it’s always a delicate balance between freedom and safety) and two sickly kittens, who did not make it. However, they also rescued thirty-one kittens who were sick or abandoned. They found their way to Syros Cats by various means. It’s a lot of work to rear kittens, especially if they are sick. They need to be homed until they can be vaccinated and rehomed – usually a minimum of six months. This requires trained expertise, dedicated volunteer care 24/7, and of course funding.
Long term trends are seeing healthy stray cats grow older, who have mostly been neutered under the CNR programme, living in or near colonies and Syros Cats Greece ‘Cat Cafés’ (feeding stations). But older cats often have dental problems, sometimes due to the poor condition of the mother and early vitamin and mineral deficiency from inadequate food. This year we arranged for eleven cats to have dental treatment – and it gives them an amazing lifestyle improvement.
We helped fund the vaccination of forty-one cats against infectious diseases and gave more than five hundred and thirty-five parasite treatments.
Each day in Kini, Syros Cats Greece and local volunteer cat carers help feed seventy street cats at feeding stations around the village. In the early part of the year, and after the tourist season ends in October, this number raises to +/- one hundred, as the visitors have gone and tavernas have closed for the winter. The local municipality provides some minimal level of funding for food.
Visitors and supporters are always welcome on Syros, and Syros Cats loves to show visitors what is taking place. Last year two hundred and eight guests were welcomed, most came with partners, friends and children, many of them came with cat food, treats or bedding and also left Syros Cats some generous donations. Some go on to become regular sponsors and adopters.

Syros Cats Greece and Syros Cats UK thank all supporters for sympathising with the difference we are trying to make.
Syros Cats Greece are also grateful to Animal Action Greece, The Greek Cat Welfare Society and Friends of the Greek Strays, all UK based charities who understand the plight of animals in Greece and continue to help care for the cats on Syros.
We thank our founder and President of Syros Cats Greece, Jacky Storey, for her continued and inspiring leadership on Syros in promoting the cause of cat welfare!

Financial policies are in place to ensure the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
The board of trustees receive regular financial reports to enable them to monitor the charity's income and expenditure thus keeping them up to date with the Trust's financial position.

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees and Members**
We report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31 December 2024 which are set out on the annexed pages.
## **Respective Responsibilities of the Trustees and Examiner**
The Trustees of the Charity are responsible for the preparation of the accounts; and consider that the audit requirement of section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 does not apply and that an independent examination is needed. It is our responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
- to follow the procedures specified in general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act, and
- to state whether particular matters have come to our attention.
## **Basis of Independent Examiner's Report**
Our examination was carried out in accordance with general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently we do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent Examiner's Statement**
In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention:
- 1) Which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act;
- and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met;
or
- 2) To which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1 Accounting policies**
## _**Basis of preparation**_
The Financial Statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities and Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities".
## _**Incoming resources**_
Unrestricted Income comprises donations and is recognised on receipt basis. Restricted Income relates to donations raised for specific purposes and is recognised on receipt basis. However, the donors have agreed that that once the primary purpose has been satisfied, any surplus funds remaining will be used for the running of the Charity's ordinary activities.

## **Charitable Activities**
These comprise all expenditure directly relating to the objects of the Charity. Support costs are an integral part of the expenses incurred in carrying out those charitable activities, which the Charity was established to perform.
## _**Governance Costs**_
Governance costs comprise the costs of running the charity, including strategic planning for its future development, also includes accountancy & legal fees and all costs relating to consnstitutional and statutory compliance.
## _**Rent & Rates**_
The charity does not own any property & also not entered into any lease or rental agreement.
