Objectives and Activities
St Johii the Baptist CliurdTh Leytonslone (5t Iohn's) is a lively, diverse, family-ILieiidly
church in the healt of tlie Leytoiistone community in East London. We seek to share
the love of God and good news of jesus Clirist thiou8h all that we do, whether it is
on a SLmday or Wediiesday at our worsliip sei'vices or serving the comniLinity
throiishout the week.
St Jolm's is part of tlie Cliurcli of England, iii Ilie Diocese of Chelmsford, the
Aiclideaconiy of West Ham, and die DeaneTy of Waltliam Forest. We work with
othw. diuiclies in Leyton8tone Eoi tlie Remembrance Day se￿ICe and Iwk to
inci'ease Olir collaboration in the Euture.
T]ie PCC coiisiders guidance from the Cliarity Commission on public benefit whon
pla[￿]ng its activities, paiticularly tlie specific guidan￿ on the advancomont of
religion. We ti'y to eiiable ordinary people to live out their faitli as part of our P<lrisli
community throiigli worsliip and prayer, pastoral cale for people livins in tile
Pai'ish, and missionary and oU￿eaCh work.
Safesuarding
The PCC ensures that a member of the churdi lias lead respoiisibility Eor
safeguai'ding in iespect of its activities, tliat it considers safeguarding at its regular

meetinss, and that its employees and volunteers are Tecriiited safely. Our
Safegu¢irding Officer carrie5 Out DBS cliecks on those who hold qualiEying positions,
as set out in the Chuicli OE Eli81￿ld'S latest Safer Recruitment Practice Guidance and
ensures regular training is iiiiderlaken.
We held a special Safeguaidllig service on November 17th Safeguarding Sunday.

people.
All are welcome to attend our iEgLilar services. Last year, we saw a small inclease in

the Chui'cli. The PCC lias discussed the Chlircli OE England's policy of moving
towalds NET 7ERO and agreed that tliis sliould iiiform oui. dccision-making goiiig
forward.
Churchyard
Tlie appeaiance of the churcliyciid continues to irnprove, reflecting the worlc of the
Community Piiyback team.
Being in an urban"location with deprivation, the chiirchyi£ rd eXperIen￿S anti-social
behavioiir including drug Lise and rou8h sleeping. We ivere grateful for Ilie
asslstciiice of oui. local councilloi's ¢ind Safei. Ncighboiii'hoods teain in maLiaging
these issues.

The beautiful Vicloiian cabt-iron iailings were iEpaired by Keystone in the autumn
following darnase by a veliicle drivllig lip Leytonstone Hish Road. UnfoitLuiately,
they were damaged again iii Decenibei. by anotlier veliicle. Theii repair is a specialist
job, ￿]d we ale thankful tliat the cost will be covered by OLir insLlI'allCe.
The brass handi'ails wei'e stolen from the niain steps loadins up to the church and
are subject to another in5uiance claim. The replacemeiit h￿]dra115 will be wrought
iroii.
Church Hall
The church liall is used by the Sunday School. a fortnightly yoiing adi11￿ group,. a
monthly church prayer meeting. monthly Vintage Tea for seiiiors,. ajid Community
Paybaclc. We no longer rwi a Stay and Play groiip.
Additionally, Ilie hall is hired out to cliibs and societies, aiid various exercise classes
take place. The liall is iegularly hired FOT private events such as birthday parties.
We instructed arcliitects to diaw up plaiis to iinprove the aiurdi Hiill. Tlie first
steps ale to register tEie Hall with tlie Land Regi5kn'y and to iiicrease tlie elec￿l￿ty
supply lo Ilie building.
The kitchen iii tlie liall is iii uigent need of iEfLirbisI￿]eIit. Fuiids i'aised by tlie
annual Ride and Stride event were set aside for tIIis puip05e, aiid a nunibei. OE

Fastoral Care
We run a l'ange OE activities that offer pastoral care to the con8regaLioii and tlie

Some members of tlie church meet in Home Gi'oups between %ervices, eitliei. onliiie
or in person. The grotips offer Bible sttidy, prayei- and siipport for tiiose in the group
and the wider comniLinily.
Mission and Evangelism
Foi maiiy yeai's, tlie church h£iS siipported the annu£l1 Christian Aid appecil. In 2024,
we also SiiPPOLted tlie Childi'en's Society tliroiigh a collection at the Christiiigle
Service and the Chi'istian Kitchen chaiity through a collection at the Carol Seivice.
We have worked with ConimLiiiity Payback on the lna1ntenwi￿ of tlie chLlI'chylÉ rd.
A liglit P¢irty was held for children of primary school age on 31.*1 October.
The church is gifted with a woiideiful strategie town-centiE locatioii, widi a
foi'ecoui't and diiirdiyaid in addition to the attractive listed building of the churcli
itself. Pait of our mission is to be at the hub of tlie Leytonstone comrniinity, and we

Clergy attend ￿￿tingS of the LÉytonstone Town Team working with the CouncÈl
and Ioccil busiiiesses to improve tlie Higl) Street. Meetings are held in tlie church.

We have a Food Share collection point inside tiie chuicli, and every S£ltLirday
