YEAR IN REVIEW

Maggie’s Message

Maggie Lloyd-Jones, Founder and Chair of Trustees with poet Lemn Sissay, inspiration behind the Q4CL charity, in Edinburgh, March 2025

Our first year as a charity saw incredible changes for Q4 with donations spreading much further than previously. Whilst the number of Christmas Day Dinners reduced in 2024, we increased donating to LA’s and agencies including The National House Project, Pause and 1[st] year university students who are care leavers. The Little

Massingham Project concluded with the church “hug” covered by local press and BBC radio. The hugs have been distributed through leaving care teams in Norfolk. We also increased our giving to include quilted hot water bottle covers and more Morsbags.

Legacy bequests of fabrics and destashing provide a significant amount of fabric for our makers, for the cost of postage. It also helps significantly for our monthly block drive.

I went to many events and made many contacts, especially at The National Benchmarking, and National House Project conferences. We know from agency/personal advisor feedback that Q4 is a grand idea, but we also know that the young people appreciate our makes. I am now following up on an incredible number of valuable contacts which will support our 2025-2027 goal of doubling the number of young people we can offer quilts to. Now we just need to get making! Mel-j

Acknowledgements

Quilts for Care Leavers would like to thank all of those who have contributed time, fabric and money to our efforts this year. We were grateful for a space at Festival of Quilts in July/August 2024 which enabled us to raise funds and awareness for the project and also to those partners and potential partners who have given their time to listen to our story, and to share it with others who might benefit. As well as those who participate in our crowdfunders and Easy Fundraising we receive a number of much appreciated regular donations.

‘24-‘25 in Quilts

We are seeing increased awareness of and word-of-mouth recommendations for our project across different sectors including local authorities, educational institutions, agencies and not-for-profit organisations working with Care Leavers. Quilt numbers donated in 2024 were the highest ever.

‘24-‘25 Projects/Events

2025 saw the conclusion of the Little Massingham project. A total of 150 quilt tops were made for Care Leavers in the Norfolk area. Remaining fabric has been packed up and will be made available to makers for orphan block quilts in future.

The team have attended events such as Festival of Quilts, QuiltFest, and been involved in Sewing Days supporting Q4CL held by members across the UK.

‘24-‘25 Accounts

Copies of the accounts for 2024-2025 are available on request from the Registered Office (email your details to q4cleavers@gmail.com) or can be viewed online via the Charity Commission Website.

‘24-‘25 Funding

We estimate that each quilt costs around £150-£200 to get from maker to care leaver. The majority of this cost is donated in the form of fabric, time and postage by our fabulous team of makers. However, we incur costs including postage, storage, batting and backings, insurance and web services amongst others.

During the year 2024-2025 funding was received from: Crowdfunder approximately £2000, Easy Fundraising approximately £1000, Festival of Quilts approximately £2000. Other donations approximately £2000. We are now registered with HMRC for Gift Aid.

OUR PEOPLE

Volunteers

There are over 3300 volunteer makers in our Facebook group, we have a growing Fabric Friends Team who collect, sort and distribute fabrics to our makers, our phenomenal Admin Team put in many hours behind the scenes to ensure quilts get from maker to Care Leaver and our Trustees are responsible for ensuring that the Charity is governed well and meets its aims. We will be looking to grow these teams in the next 12 months.
