**Annual Report for 2024/2025 AGM Trustees of Old Chapel (Unitarian) Great Hucklow CIO** Registered Charity Number: 1207045
## Objects:
The Object of the CIO is the promotion of religion in accordance with the principles of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches. A welcome is extended to all.
## Worship:
The Chapel has been open for regular worship on the first Sunday of every month, with additional services happening as required by Unitarian Groups visiting the Nightingale Centre, such as the FOY Society, the Unitarian Music Society and the Summer School. The Chapel also hosted an Armistice Service on 7 November 2024, attended by local Civic dignitaries as well as schoolchildren from the Woodland Federation of Peak District Schools, and the Carol Service, on 12 December 2024, led by ministry students of the Unitarian College. In June 2025, we formalised the work of Ed Fordham, our lay leader, by creating a freelance contract arrangement for regular activity. Ed now opens up the Chapel on one day a week, in addition to leading worship as required on Sundays. There are 13 general members of the Chapel in total.
## Trustees Meetings:
The Trustees held one formal meeting in February 2025, but plans for further meetings were disrupted by the illness and hospitalisation of the Chair in May 2025. CIO business has continued remotely, with the Lay Leader and Officers corresponding via email. The AGM for 2024/2025 was postponed to February 2026, to allow preparation of papers and a good attendance.
## Officers:
For 2024/2025, Dr Judith Short served as Chair and Treasurer and Mr Tim Baker served as Secretary.
## Other Trustees:
At the first AGM of the new CIO, held on 3 November 2024, all Trustees retired and a new committee was established. In addition to the Officers above, further appointed Trustees were: Mr Graham Hague, Mr Peter Rowson, Mrs Janet Rowson, Mr Ed Fordham, Ms Vicky Hewerdine, Ms Emma France, Ms Lynn Bannister, Mr John Barwick and Mrs Glenis Barwick. Ms Carol Mealing was co-opted as village representative.
## Chapel Maintenance:
The inside windows of the Chapel were kindly cleaned in August 2025 by a local expert, leading to much improved daylight in the Chapel. Work continues to create a usable office space in the balcony area, with avoidance of any changes to listed fittings.
## Chapel Activities:
The Chapel was fitted with internet access in December 2024, allowing the Christmas Carol Service to be attended remotely via Zoom. This was very well received, and the WiFi facility now allows the Chapel and Schoolroom to be used as a breakout space for Unitarian gatherings at the Nightingale Centre. The Chapel has been used regularly by the Unitarian College for ministerial and lay leadership training, and for youth events. The Chapel was represented at the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches in April 2025 by Vicky Hewerdine. Judith Short represented the Sheffield District Association and Tim Baker was also in attendance.

## Chapel Grounds:
The Chapel grounds continue to be maintained beautifully and include the Peace Pole, the grave of the passing stranger, the memorial bench, and the evolving bug hotel.
## Community Activities:
The Chapel has hosted two funerals and one wedding in the last year, along with many other community events, such as an afternoon tea, a soup meal that brought together many older village residents, the children’s well dressing and Christmas lights switch-on. Our lay leader officiated at the latter two events.
## Constitution:
At the AGM in February 2026, we agreed an amendment to the CIO Constitution, allowing more formally for a representative from the Sheffield District Association of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches to be co-opted onto the Trustees Committee.
## Public Benefit:
The Trustees consider that the requirements for public benefit have been demonstrated over the year. The Chapel was open regularly for public worship and also social activities and events.
## Accounts and Financial Position:
The CIO is in a good financial position, and has been fortunate to receive grants for pulpit supply and ongoing expenses. The internet provision was supported by a very generous donation from a Chapel member. Full accounts are provided separately.

## Notes:
**Accounting policies:** The accounts have been prepared using generally accepted accounting principles in the United Kingdom. The accounts have been prepared on a going concern basis on the assumption that the CIO will continue to operate.
**Description of funds:** The Trust holds investments as capital funds. Although the capital is not a restricted fund, the trustees do not intend to use this for the general purposes of the Charity. Interest received on capital investments are classed as general funds. Donations and fees received are treated as general funds. Gift Aid claimed is also added to general funds.
**Donations:** Donations come from a variety of sources, including offertory at services and donations from Unitarian Associations and individuals. Grants were received this year from the Unity Church Trust, the Sheffield District Association of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches, and the Gregson Trust.
**Support of other Charities:** The Old Chapel (Unitarian) Great Hucklow supports the work of the Send a Child to Hucklow Fund (registered charity number 1189260) in collecting soft toys to be given to children attending SACH holidays. Any proceeds from the sale of donated toys that are unsuitable for this purpose are contributed to SACH. In addition, the offertory collected at the 2024 Carol Service, was shared equally with the Unitarian College.
**Lay leader fees:** There was an increase in fees paid to the Lay Leader this year, compared with the year ending 30 September 2024, due to increased activity and more formal remuneration of the Lay Leader as a freelance contractor.
