**PEM Friends Report of the trustees for the period 14[th] February 2024 to 31 December 2024**

## **Structure, governance and management**

The company is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation formed on 14[th] February 2024 and registered as a charity with the Charities Commission on 15[th] February 2024.

## I **nduction and training of trustees**

Trustees are encouraged to read the online information on the Charity Commission website relating to their responsibilities.

## **Organisational structure, including recruitment and appointment of trustees**

The charity is strategically managed by a council of trustees who are recruited for the support, knowledge and experience that they can bring. The council is supported by a small group of medical advisers.

All trustees and advisers are volunteers with no payment for their services.

## **Aims, objectives and activities**

## **Aims**

The aims of the charity are set out in the governing document as:

_TO RELIEVE THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS DIAGNOSED WITH PEMPHIGUS AND PEMPHIGOID, AND BY EXTENSION THEIR FAMILIES AND CARERS, IN PARTICULAR BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY BY THE PROVISION OF SUPPORT AND INFORMATION RELATING TO THESE AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES AND BY RAISING AWARENESS AMONGST THE WIDER PUBLIC_

## **Objectives**

The objectives relate to delivering support and advice to Pem sufferers and/or carers via a private Facebook group and increasing awareness amongst the medical profession in order to improve early diagnosis.

## **Activity of volunteers**

The charity is run entirely by volunteers of which there were 9 active at the year-end.

## **Activities undertaken for public benefit in relation to objects**

In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charities Commission’s guidance on public benefit and the work was planned with reference to the trustees and monitored through the council meetings of trustees

## **Achievements and performance**

During the period,

- The charity continued to provide support to people suffering from the rare skin diseases pemphigoid/pemphigus via its website and maintained a private Facebook group of circa 850, in which sufferers and carers can exchange experience and knowledge.

- A substantial upgrade to the charity’s website went live to provide a comprehensive database of knowledge, treatments and support structure for disease sufferers and their carers.

- The website database has links through to the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), numerous medical research papers and reports and current news features relating to the activities of the charity.

- The half-yearly magazine, PEM Lives, was published with articles providing an insight into all aspects of PEM diseases, including examples of lived experience.

- Charity trustees and volunteers attended medical conferences to further raise awareness of these diseases including the annual BAD conference.

## **Financial**

The charity is reliant upon income raised from donations and sponsored activities plus the occasional grant. Total income of £6,420 included a grant from the British Association of Dermatologists of £584 to support a first annual meeting for which we are very grateful. We are also very grateful when we are nominated as the charity of choice in remembrance of a deceased family member at what is a difficult time.

Expenditure supports the cost of the printing and distribution of the PEM Lives magazine (£1.9k) and the website and systems (£1k). Also, it also includes the cost of attendance at the various conferences noted above (£1.2k) keeping the medical profession aware of the issues relating to the rare PEM diseases and encouraging earlier diagnosis of the related symptoms, which is a key element of our mission of support to sufferers.

Overall, the charity is in a sound financial position.

## **Reserves policy**

The charity is dependent upon donations and fundraising activities. The trustees have built up the unrestricted reserves across the period and are able to meet the financial commitments that the charity plans for the year ahead.

As the charitable Incorporated organisation has an income less than £25,000, its accounts have not been independently examined or audited?
