## **Objectives and activities**

Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document

**The objects of Galleywood Men’s Shed are to promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing individuals within Galleywood and the surrounding area from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society through the provision of facilities in which they can meet to undertake, jointly or individually, creative, physical or recreational activities, learn or pass on skills and knowledge and support each other socially.**

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects:

**In our meetings and planning for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings.**

Additional details of objectives and activities

**We are grateful for the many hours that volunteers have spent working toward the Galleywood Men’s Shed project. We especially acknowledge the work undertaken by Essex Shed Network in attempting to find an appropriate site to establish a Shed in Galleywood.**

## Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year:

**Since our adoption of the CIO’s Governing Document, we have met on nine occasions during the year. Apart from one meeting, all have been fully attended by our trustees, members and advisors.**

**Galleywood Men’s Shed (GMS) has been generously assisted by Essex Shed Network (ESN) throughout the past couple of years. ESN have given us guidance with the application for our CIO status, have dealt with both the local Foodbank (site lessees) and Diocese of Chelmsford (landowners) and have continued to support our search for suitable Shed site.**

**We were fortunate to receive a generous donation from Uttlesford Community Action Network (UCAN) that will enable us to establish a footprint in the local community.**

**We have also had the support of Galleywood Parish Council with their initial idea of establishing a local Men’s Shed.**

**Most of the year’s activity has been negotiating with the GMS, Chelmsford Foodbank (part of River Church), River Church, Diocese of Chelmsford (DoC) and ESN. Many hours of meetings and much communication between the organisations has taken place. The site eventually became unviable due to several issues, mainly the required alteration to the Foodbank lease to allow sub-leasing. We spent a great deal of time communicating with the DoC’s London solicitors. The cost would have been over £2000 for a change in the DoC lease. This change would have been of an uncertain term as the foodbank’s lease is due for review in 2027. Despite having worked toward the solution for over two years, it was decided to abandon the proposed site at the Foodbank because of the uncertainty of tenure.**

**We met to review the possible areas and organisations that might be capable and/or willing to host the proposed Shed. From the list, ESN contacted all the names on the list. At the time of writing, we learned that many were unable to accommodate the project. However, there has been one organisation that is very interested to see if they can help us and ESN are actively pursuing this lead.**

**It is hoped that the coming year will bring better news for the establishment of a physical presence for Galleywood Men’s Shed.**

**During the foodbank negotiations, we submitted a request to Chelmsford Council Planning Department for locating two containers at the rear of their site. Although this site location will no longer be pursued, we learned a great**

**deal for how any future planning permission application should be submitted to the Council department.**

## **Financial review**

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

**Cash at bank as at 14/05/2025 is £9925 in unrestricted funds. Currently the charity does not have any financial risk. The funds are held to cover operational and ‘start up’ costs as and when the charity finds a site from which it can operate.**

Details of any funds materially in deficit **Not applicable**

Further financial review details:

**Our only source of funds this year has been the initial £10000 donation from Uttlesford Community Action Network. The only outgoings being £75.00 to cover work carried out on charity’s behalf by Chelmsford Council Planning Department.**

Additional information

**Once the charity has found premises from which to operate it’s principal sources of funds will be by fundraising.**
