Aim and Purposes

Hope Church Goldthorpe is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) which exists to glorify God by building up believers, reaching out with the gospel, and doing good in the community. The trustees work in partnership with the leaders and the whole congregation to promote the mission of the church within Goldthorpe and beyond, in ways that are consistent with its doctrinal and ethical commitments.

Objectives and Activities

In planning our activities for the year, the trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit, particularly in relation to the advancement of religion.

Hope Church Goldthorpe seeks to enable people to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus Christ, to grow in faith, and to live out that faith in service to others. This is achieved through regular worship services, Bible teaching, prayer, and pastoral care. The church provides structured opportunities for discipleship through Life Groups, youth and children’s ministries.

The church also engages in outreach activities, including community events, evangelistic initiatives, and support for mission partners both locally and internationally. In addition to spiritual care, the church seeks to relieve need, hardship, and sickness through practical support, including food bank donations and a support fund.

Activities are overseen by the elders and trustees who are committed to the spiritual and administrative integrity of the organisation.

Achievements and Performance

Worship and Teaching

Throughout the year, our preaching series covered Ephesians, Genesis, 2 Peter, and John’s Gospel. These series were well received and helped deepen the congregation’s understanding of Scripture and to grow in the knowledge and love of God in Christ. During a period of unpaid compassionate leave taken by our senior minister, we were grateful to receive the support of guest preachers on a number of Sundays to sustain the teaching ministry.

We are thankful to have been able to welcome a steady flow of newcomers and visitors over the course of the year, some of whom have become regular attendees.

A particular highlight was a service of baptisms and renewal of baptismal promises in December 2024 with the use of the adjacent leisure centre swimming pool.

Youth and Children’s Ministry

The youth group engaged with challenging biblical themes, including Daniel, Revelation, and the nativity account in Luke, showing encouraging signs of spiritual growth.

Due to staffing constraints, we merged our Sunday Club and Minis groups. Though we feared the age range might prove too broad, the children have adapted well and the group have settled into a new format. Teaching included studies in Mark, Psalms, Ruth, Solomon, and global Christianity. Children participated actively in prayer and discussions, and we were encouraged by their growing confidence in expressing faith.

Life Groups and Pastoral Care

Three Life Groups met weekly, with around 20 to 25 adults attending regularly. These groups provided space for prayer, Bible study, and mutual support. A restructuring of the groups for the new academic year allowed for better pastoral care and deeper relationships. Feedback from participants highlighted the importance of these gatherings in their spiritual growth and the enjoyment of the regular fellowship experienced.

Pastoral care and support have also been provided for individuals affected by illness, in care homes, and individual Bible studies for some where Life Group attendance was not feasible.

Outreach and Evangelism

We hosted several outreach events during the year, including a quiz night, wreathmaking, and Christmas services. These events were well attended and provided natural opportunities to share the gospel. Our regular visits to Cherry Tree Court continued, offering gospel talks and companionship to residents. We also maintained strong relationships with mission partners in Kenya, Nigeria, and other training ministries, supporting them financially and prayerfully.

Community Service

Our commitment to doing good in our community has included a new initiative of regular food donations to the local food bank, distribution of support funds, and a donation to IDAS. Many acts of service happened informally, as members responded to needs within their neighbourhoods and workplaces.

Safeguarding and Volunteer Development

We reviewed and updated our safeguarding policies, ensuring compliance with current standards. Plans were initiated to implement DBS checks and safer recruitment practices for all volunteers in relevant roles. We also began the process of developing clearer guidance for volunteer roles and responsibilities.

We would like to thank all those who have served as volunteers at Hope Church in the past year for their commitment and willingness to give time, effort and care to bless others out of love for Jesus.

Financial Review

The financial statements are detailed in the Finance Report below. Regular giving remained stable throughout the year, and additional gifts supported mission and outreach efforts. Minister costs were under budget due to a period of unpaid leave, while spending increased in areas such as AV equipment and expenses for guest preaching.

We maintained a reserves policy to ensure financial stability and preparedness for future needs, including pastoral appointments and housing. Funds were set aside for strategic goals, including the recruitment of a new pastor and potential property developments. Generous giving enabled us to support mission partners and local initiatives without compromising core activities.

Reserves policy

In line with our Financial Management Policy, clause 4.v., the church’s reserves can be held in interest-bearing deposit accounts with a recognised bank. Such reserves will be held in cash or other liquid investments realisable within a period of no more than three months. The level of reserves required is set at three months of the budgeted expenditure.

In our 2024/25 budget, the three months reserve amounted to £12,507. Funds in excess of this were maintained in our savings account throughout the year. £50,000 from our opening balance was transferred to savings on 26th April 2024, and by year end that has risen to £80,571.51. Whilst, our current account had £10,000 - £40,000 in it through the year, and the church council subsequently decided to keep this account at around

£20,000 (as there is a loss of interest if savings are drawn without a 95 day notice), transferring any funds in excess of this to savings.

The reason for a savings balance so far in excess of our planned reserves was two-fold. As our paid minister was off work on unpaid compassionate leave, therefore our expenses were reduced significantly. Secondly, in response to him being off work, more funds were donated to allow us to be able to advertise for a new full-time co-pastor. These funds were in turn put into savings.

Structure, Governance and Management

Hope Church Goldthorpe is governed by a board of trustees who meet regularly to oversee spiritual, financial, and operational matters. Trustees are appointed in accordance with the church’s Constitution and Charity Commission guidelines.

During the year, the trustees met to review ministry progress, financial health, and governance structures. Discussions were also held around the potential separation of spiritual oversight from administrative governance to improve clarity and accountability. Safeguarding updates and volunteer development were also reviewed.

Public Benefit Statement

The trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty to have regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. Hope Church provides benefit to the public through open worship services, youth and children’s engagement, community outreach, and charitable giving. Our activities are open to all and aim to foster personal growth and spiritual wellbeing within a welcoming and supportive community.

Plans for the Future

Looking ahead, the trustees are seeking to recruit a new pastor to help lead and grow the church, under God. In the meantime, we will continue to work hard to sustain our current activities and look for further opportunities to facilitate spiritual growth for all ages, develop our youth and children’s ministry, strengthen safeguarding and volunteer structures, and deepen relationships with mission partners. Outreach in Goldthorpe will remain a priority, with continued emphasis on sharing the gospel and serving the needs of our community.
