## **Trustee statement** 

The trustees acknowledge their responsibilities for complying with the requirements of guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit by ensuring that all of Made in Roath’s activities and initiatives are clearly directed towards the advancement of art, culture, and community engagement for the benefit of the public. 

As a community arts organisation, Made in Roath is committed to providing inclusive, accessible, and creative opportunities that enable individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds to engage with the arts. The trustees regularly review the organisation’s aims, activities, and outcomes to ensure that they align with the charity’s objectives and continue to deliver tangible public benefit. 

In practice, this includes supporting projects that encourage participation in artistic activities, fostering collaboration between artists and local residents, and contributing to the social, cultural, and environmental wellbeing of the Roath community and beyond. The trustees also ensure that resources are used efficiently and transparently, and that any private benefit arising from our work is incidental and necessary to achieving our charitable purposes.

Projects and programmes 

## **Chatterbox / The Healing Project** 

Chatterbox is a monthly session that Made in Roath hosts for local muslim women artists where people meet other artists from different practices, socialise, are creative and listen to invited artist speakers to talk about the journey they have taken in the creative sector. Artists have time to engage in discussions as well. 

## Aims 

To provide a space for Muslim Artists to talk, connect and meet other muslim artists in order to inspire them to develop areas within their practice and provide artists with opportunities such as residencies or workshops to help them get on their feet. The space is provided so the women can have discussions about their practices that may lead to new ideas within their practice. 

Objectives: 

To achieve this, Chatterbox hosts sessions with guest speakers 



Evaluate attendees needs’ 

Checking in with artists whether residencies will be of use to them 

Respond to artists who want to use space for public workshops 

Check if they need help with applying for commissions. 

Respond to new ideas artists want to explore by providing them with any support they require. 

**The Healing Project** is a key project within the Made in Roath programme. Initiated in November 2023 through a collaborative quilt, the group came together to stitch text and embroidered patterns responding to the plight of Palestinian people. Since then, members have held spaces where the public and the wider community have also been able to submit pieces of artwork towards the Peace Quilt. The artists involved in The Healing Project will continue to hold spaces to make more artwork with the community for different global issues, it came from conversations that were held as part of the Chatterbox programme. 

In 2024 the programme included four workshops, four talks, eight planning meetings, an exhibition of female Muslim women artists work including 11 artists, a day long ‘gathering’ event to celebrate the programme, and several coaching sessions. Made in Roath worked with Gaia Rosenburg Coloni to complete a large scale evaluation report of the two years of the project. 

## **General programme** 

The general Made in Roath programme works with the local community and artists across the year. In Feb - Sept 2024 this included one sound studio residency, Red Route, a public walk from Cardiff to Merthyr to celebrate workers rights through creativity, one Solstice Radio event, the creation of bi-weekly sewing sessions to support local women artists, the Open exhibition and workshops. 

Solstice Radio is an annual event commissioning new audio work around the theme of the Solstice. For Summer each year Made in Roath works with an artist, or collaboration, to bring together the works, and broadcast these out over a 24 hour period (dawn to dawn) for the wider public to experience. 

The Open Exhibition is a platform for local, emerging, and established artists to exhibit, emphasising inclusivity and connection in the Welsh art scene. 

The Residency Programme is offers artists space and support, to develop new work, focusing on community engagement, exploring local history, and creating diverse art like printmaking, performance, and moving image 

**Climate Cooks** - monthly meetings and public events 

Climate Cooks is a project around cooking and eating together, sharing recipes, talking, and thinking about where our food comes from and how we feed ourselves and our families. The group members are made up of women with lived experience of the asylum system. Made in Roath and Climate Cooks have been meeting now for over two years, but most recently have been getting out more into the community thanks to our electric bike / fold out kitchen. Climate Cooks have worked with Artes Mundi, Teasel, g39 Neighbourhood Crowd, Spit & Sawdust and Anti University. 

In Feb - Sept 2024 Made in Roath / Climate Cooks hosted one iftar, took part in Red Route through creating special snacks and sweet treats, supported Teasel Community through catering for their summer event, ran a social at St Fagans Museum, and a skill share at Spit and Sawdust skate park. This work was largely funded through SPF / UK Government. 



**Braeval Street Community Darkroom** is a volunteer-run community darkroom hosted by Made in Roath at Breaval Street Studios. In this time period the group ran two \introduction to darkroom skills’ sessions and three self-run printing sessions. 

**Braeval Street Studios** continued to host affordable artist studios, with nine long-term studio holders and one artist residency. The community graden, which sits alongside the studio continued to develop, with two community events and opportunities for the public to engage with the space. 

Organisationally, Made in Roath worked with Could be Good Studios to redevelop the website, to sit alongside the eventual name change. Alongside this large piece of work Made in Roath continued to run Braeval Street Studios, and 1a Inverness Place, including hosting weekly meetings for Now in a Minute Media, and Muslima Outdoors.

Financial focus and performance of the charity 

Within this time period Made in Roath made applications to British Council Wales, Welsh Government Cultural Grant Scheme, Diverse Cymru, the Oakdale Trust and to Arts Council Wales through the Create strand. While the applications to British Council Wales, Diverse Cymru and the Oakdale Foundation were unsuccessful, the applications to the Welsh Government Cultural Grant Scheme and to Arts Council Wales was successful and has enabled us to continue to run our core projects and programmes. 

Outline of approach to Sustainability 

Made in Roath rely on grant funding & project support and have historically accessed grant funding from external sources, such as local and national arts funding bodies and community grant schemes. Made in Roath is committed to developing relationships with new funders as well as developing new  income strands to support our work, creating a diverse funding pool to support our work. 

## **Objectives and Activities** 

The Objects of the Charity are to advance public education in the arts including visual arts, music, theatre, literature, poetry, traditional crafts, painting, sculpture and digital arts, and to extend and increase the public appreciation, knowledge and understanding of the arts in all their forms by 1) organising community events, talks, performance and exhibitions in South Wales that promote arts, education and skills development and b) promoting partnerships within the community to promote the arts 



Made in Roath carry out those objectives via the following core activities: 

- To encourage accessibility to the arts by providing opportunities for exhibiting, creative development opportunities, residencies, accessing assets such as the community garden, artist studios and library 

- To work with communities that struggle to engage with the arts, whether through cultural, economic or societal reasons by working closely with third sector organisations to reach under-represented communities 

- To commission local, national and international artists to make new work, connecting with the local community, embedded in and reflecting on wider social issues

## **Future Plans** 

Over the next reporting period, Made in Roath plans to build on its work by strengthening community engagement, improving organisational sustainability, and expanding access to inclusive, locally rooted activities. 

## **1. Programme Development** 

The charity aims to: 

- Continue delivering regular community programmes in Roath that respond to the needs of local residents 

- Expand creative and skills-based activities, particularly for women and marginalised groups, ensuring they are accessible, culturally sensitive, and affordable 

- Continue to develop projects that explore new ways of engaging the community, informed by participant feedback and local need 

## **2. Community Partnerships** 

The charity plans to: 

- Strengthen partnerships with local organisations, schools, faith groups, and community centres in Roath and the wider Cardiff area 

- Collaborate with other voluntary and statutory bodies to reduce duplication and increase collective impact 

- Increase visibility within the local community through open events, exhibitions, and shared initiatives 

## **3. Capacity Building & Governance** 

To ensure long-term sustainability, the charity intends to: 

- Provide training and development opportunities for trustees, staff, and volunteers 

- Review governance structures to ensure they remain effective, transparent, and aligned with Charity Commission guidance 

- Develop clear policies around safeguarding, equality and diversity, and financial management where required
