After receiving successful notification of our application to register with the CC as a charity on Feb 24[th] 2024 the period 2024 – 25 was taken up primarily with the establishment of the policies and procedures we would follow in order to achieve our primary objective of making appropriate financial assistance available to disadvantaged young musicians. We covered the following ground:
-
Agreement to build and launch a website with a logo and content.
-
Developed policies and systems about the application process, the scope and size of the Award.
-
We launched some trial publicity in Oct/Nov. This was not successful and we spent time reflecting on this.
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)
-
In terms of due diligence we spent a significant time was spent discussing the ethics of requiring ‘evidence’ of hardship from applicants and what this evidence might be. The final decision was to read between the lines of the application form to establish financial hardship together with the professional insights of the Trustees.
-
Developed an online application form on the website with the capacity for applicants to add links to their musical performances.
-
Built relationships with a couple of educational institutions with which Max was closely associated: Bath College, Bristol, Dorcan Academy.
-
We launched a new application form and better publicity mid February 2025 with a deadline for applications 18[th] April.
We also attended and spoke at a book launch event at the University of West England for an academic text book dedicated to Max Weedon.
The Trustees have had regard to all aspects of public benefit issues. No Trustee receives any remuneration. And Public Benefit issues we are aware that the great majority of our applicants work with a group environment – i.e. inside their band/group structure and within a community environment to practice and perform their music. The ripple effects from their gaining a personal Award seems clear to us in that these young musicians work across all genres of popular music, which by its nature is encompassing and reaches across diverse communities.

Our policy on making grants to young people up to an amount of £500 per Award is based on the amount covering the costs of significant physical equipment in the shape of an instrument or recording equipment or tuition. We repeat our public benefit awareness here in that we decided, at this stage in our own development as a charity, to make awards to individuals and not to collectives.
