Our Future

Trustees' Annual Report (continued)

Period from 01 October 2024 to 30 September 2025

Objectives and activities

Our Future unlocks the power and potential of communities to build a flourishing future for themselves. We work primarily with communities experiencing deprivation - places often described as “left behind” but rich in ideas, skill and determination.

We bring together local leaders, civic entrepreneurs and residents to develop a shared vision for their hometowns, and we help connect that vision to the relationships, resources and funding needed to make it happen.

Our work operates at two levels:

In all that we do, we aim to:

Building on the foundations laid in our first year, this year we focused on deepening our model in Grimsby, while testing its adaptability and demand in other towns.

Activities, achievements and performance

North East Lincolnshire

Our work in Grimsby remained the heart of Our Future in 2024-25. Across the year we made progress on four interconnected fronts:

A working-group participant summed up the spirit of the work:

Our Future

Period from 01 October 2024 to 30 September 2025

reporting greater confidence and stronger connections. By mid-2025 the group had broadened its membership to attract a more diverse range of leaders, and quarterly changemaker lunches were established.

This year’s focus in Grimsby was about moving from vision to delivery - supporting working groups, enabling early projects to take root, and building the foundations for long-term community-led change.

Rochdale

In spring 2025 we were invited by local partners and the owners of Rochdale AFC to explore how Our Future’s model might support citizen-led regeneration in Rochdale.

Between April and September 2025, we:

Through this early work, we have begun to build shared language and purpose with local partners. The groundwork has been laid for deeper collaboration in the coming year.

Wrexham

Our involvement in Wrexham began in early 2025, following an invitation from a locally led group seeking to apply Our Future’s approach. During this period, we:

Our Future’s role in Wrexham concluded in September 2025.

National and Policy Impact

Our third annual Open House was held in November 2024. It brought civic entrepreneurs from Wrexham, Rochdale and Sunderland to Grimsby as well as national stakeholders. Visitors were struck by the momentum and sense of hope in the town.

Our learning in Grimsby and beyond continued to inform national policy discussions about regeneration and community power. We organised for Minister Georgia Gould to visit Grimsby to see the change underway. We were also invited by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) to share our ethos and approach at the Plan for Neighbourhoods Conference in July 2025, where officials referenced Our Future’s influence on emerging policy design. Within a month, one council reported adopting several of our methods in their own neighbourhood-planning process.

Our Future

Trustees' Annual Report (continued)

Period from 01 October 2024 to 30 September 2025

We have also been approached by other towns and regions keen to adapt our model. While we are exploring these opportunities, we are doing so carefully, ensuring any new work is locally invited and adequately resourced.

Financial review

A summary of the year's results can be found on page 8 of the attached financial statements.

Our second year of operation saw continued growth and careful financial management. Income was derived primarily from charitable trusts and foundations.

Our operating model remains intentionally lean, with a core team supported by expert associates and the generous contribution of partners providing office and event space.

The financial statements for the year show total income of £617,681, expenditure of £550,127. The charity has ended the year with £278,720 of total funds carried over. This is funding secured for our third year of operations. The charity will need to fundraise further to cover the third year’s costs.

Reserves policy

As this is Our Future's second operational year, the charity continues to work building up its reserves.

The trustees' policy is to ensure that the charity holds, at all times, at least three months of core operating costs in committed unrestricted funding - providing sufficient runway to meet obligations. The charity holds no free reserves in the conventional sense. Unrestricted funds represent grant income already secured and budgeted for year 3 operations. The charity does not hold a separate cash reserve and relies on proactive fundraising to maintain adequate runway. At 30 September 2025, the three-month threshold was met. Trustees keep the reserves policy under review and intend to build a free reserve as the charity's income base matures.

Thank you

We are deeply grateful to the individuals, partners and funders who have made our work possible this year - through grants, pro-bono support, office space or simply by showing up with their time and ideas.

Our thanks go to:

Above all, we thank the hundreds of residents and local leaders across Grimsby, Wrexham and Rochdale who are showing what’s possible when communities lead the change.

The trustees' annual report was approved on 19 June 2026 and signed on behalf of the board of trustees by:

James Perry Chair

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Our Future

Period from 01 October 2024 to 30 September 2025

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of Our Future ('the charity') for the period ended 30 September 2025.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity's financial statements carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

Since the charity’s gross income exceeded £250,000 your examiner must be a member of a body listed in section 145 of the 2011 Act. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), which is one of the listed bodies.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the financial statements do not accord with those records; or

  3. the financial statements do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

3. Accounting policies

Period from 01 October 2024 to 30 September 2025

3. Accounting policies (continued)

Incoming resources

All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when entitlement has passed to the charity; it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the charity and the amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income:

Resources expended

Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis as a liability is incurred. Expenditure includes any VAT which cannot be fully recovered, and is classified under headings of the statement of financial activities to which it relates:

All costs are allocated to expenditure categories reflecting the use of the resource. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs are apportioned between the activities they contribute to on a reasonable, justifiable and consistent basis.

Tangible assets

Tangible assets are initially recorded at cost, and subsequently stated at cost less any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Any tangible assets carried at revalued amounts are recorded at the fair value at the date of revaluation less any subsequent accumulated depreciation and subsequent accumulated impairment losses.

- 12 -

Our Future

Notes to the Financial Statements (continued)

Period from 01 October 2024 to 30 September 2025

3. Accounting policies (continued)

An increase in the carrying amount of an asset as a result of a revaluation, is recognised in other recognised gains and losses, unless it reverses a charge for impairment that has previously been recognised as expenditure within the statement of financial activities. A decrease in the carrying amount of an asset as a result of revaluation, is recognised in other recognised gains and losses, except to which it offsets any previous revaluation gain, in which case the loss is shown within other recognised gains and losses on the statement of financial activities.

Depreciation

Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost or valuation of an asset, less its residual value, over the useful economic life of that asset as follows:
