Empowering Young Women (EYW) is a charitable company limited by guarantee (Company No. 14535109) governed by its Articles of Association adopted upon incorporation. The charity has no share capital, and each member’s liability is limited to £10.

The Board of Trustees—who are also the directors for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006—are responsible for the overall strategic direction, governance, and financial management of the charity. These collaborations strengthened the quality of delivery and provided practical, industry-focused learning experiences.

University Collaborations

EYW worked with three major African universities to deliver transformative higher education programmes:

  1. Leadership for Equity (Addis Ababa Science and Technology University and Makerere University, Uganda) – mentoring and career readiness for women in STEM and business fields.

  2. Enterprise for Women – professional and entrepreneurship training supporting economic independence and local innovation.

  3. Digital Empowerment & Inclusion – creating pathways for women into digital careers such as data science, financial engineering, and artificial intelligence.

Financial Review

EYW’s funding base during 2024 comprised contributions from its founders, a number of individual donors, and a small but growing network of corporate partners. The charity continues to prioritise transparency, accountability, and the effective use of resources in pursuit of its objectives.

In 2024, Burberry joined as a key fundraising partner, supporting programme delivery and helping EYW broaden its impact through innovation and events. Expenditure for the year focused on education programme delivery, alumni support, community initiatives, staffing, and essential operational costs.

EYW maintains a prudent reserves policy to ensure financial sustainability and safeguard future delivery. All funds were used solely for the charity’s purposes. The trustees regularly monitor budgets and maintain appropriate oversight to ensure value for money and alignment with the charity’s mission.

Plans for the Future Period

The charity’s strategic focus for 2025–2026 is to build on existing success, strengthen sustainability, and expand its reach across Kenya, East Africa, and globally. EYW will continue to

deliver quality education and empowerment opportunities while pursuing new collaborations and sources of support.

  1. HOST Project (Holistic Opportunities for Sanitation and Transformation) – developing modern sanitation facilities for schools in underserved Kenyan areas, integrating hygiene education and infrastructure to promote dignity and attendance.

  2. Warrior Up-Skill Programme – providing structured martial arts and mentorship for teenagers in vulnerable communities, fostering resilience, discipline, and leadership.

  3. EYW Alumni Community – The Living Legacy – nurturing a global network of alumni advocates supporting mentorship and peer-driven initiatives.

  4. Ongoing Development of Education Programmes – enhancing hybrid learning, modular workshops, and partnerships to expand opportunities for girls and women in education and employment.

Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Annual Report and Financial Statements in accordance with UK law and accounting standards. They must ensure that proper accounting records are maintained, financial statements give a true and fair view of the charity’s financial position, and that the organisation operates in compliance with its governing document and statutory obligations. The trustees confirm that EYW has adequate resources to continue in operation and that there are no material uncertainties regarding its ability to continue as a going concern.

Dissolution

In accordance with Article 60 of the Articles of Association, in the event of dissolution, any remaining assets after settling liabilities shall be applied directly towards Empowering Young Women’s charitable purposes or transferred to another charity with similar objectives. Under no circumstances shall any assets be distributed among members.

Statement of Directors Responsibilities

The directors are responsible for preparing the Directors’ Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and regulations.

Company law requires the directors to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under that law the directors have elected to prepare the financial statements in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice including Financial Reporting Standard 102 The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Under company law the directors must not approve the financial statements unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the company and of the profit and loss for the company for that period.

In preparing these financial statements, the directors are required to:

• select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

• make judgements and accounting estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

• state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and

• prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the company will continue in business.

The directors are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain the company’s transactions and disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The directors are responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the corporate and financial information included on the company’s website. Legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of financial statements may differ from legislation in other jurisdictions.

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with our terms of engagement and in order to assist you to fulfil your duties under the Companies Acts that relate to preparing the financial statements of the company for the year ended 31 December 2024.

We have prepared these finance statements, which include the Income Statement, the Statement of Financial Position and the related notes, based on the accounting records, information and explanations provided by you. We do not express any opinion on the financial statements.
