Receipts and payments accounts for the BRITISH SEDIMENTOLOGICAL RESEARCH GROUP (BSRG)
The BSRG became a registered charity on 26[th] January 2024. Therefore this report covers the period 26th January 2024 to 30th November 2024 (end of the financial year).
The accounts (financial statements) have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities published on 16 July 2014, the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (FRSSE), and the Charities Act 2011 and UK Generally Accepted Practice as it applies from 1 January 2015.
The accounts (financial statements) have been prepared to give a ‘true and fair’ view and have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a ‘true and fair view’. This departure has involved following the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities published on 16 July 2014 rather than the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice effective from 1 April 2005 which has since been withdrawn.
For the period 26th January 2024 (the date the BSRG became a registered charity) to 30th November 2024, the BSRG received a gross income of £7087, of which £3788 was in the form of sponsorship (donations), £659 from interest on the BSRG savings account, and the remainder from individuals paying to attend the charitable events organised. The BSRG had a gross spending of £7161, of which £2000 was spent on grants made to individuals, with remainder spent on the organising and running of the charitable events.

Structure, governance and management
The BSRG governing document is the Constitution, which has been approved by the BSRG members on 20/12/16. This has not changed since the BSRG acquired charity status.
The BSRG is governed and managed by a committee comprising trustees and non-trustees, who are voted in each year at the annual general meeting. The committee for the period 26[th] January 2024 to 30[th] November 2024 was as follows:

Objectives and activities
The overall purpose of the BSRG is the advancement of the science of sedimentology and stratigraphy (including associated disciplines), in research, at all levels of education, and in its practical application.
The specific objectives of the BSRG are:
i. To promote and enhance sedimentological and stratigraphic research both within the UK and internationally.
ii. To support student and early-career members to access training and other educational opportunities. Early-career members are defined as: i) post-PhD members not in a permanent position; and (ii) post-PhD members within the first three years of their first permanent position.
iii. To organise and support high-quality research meetings, including an Annual General Meeting (AGM).
iv. To provide representation for the community between the BSRG and other bodies.
The main activities undertaken by the charity to further its charitable purposes for the public benefit are 1) the organisation and running of the Annual General Meeting, a research meeting in which UK sedimentology research is shared and discussed in the form of talks, posters and audience discussions. The General Meeting also delivers a report to all members on the activities undertaken by the BSRG over the past year, including a treasurer’s report. 2) the organisation and running of the annual Postgraduate Fieldtrip, aimed at educating masters and PhD students in sedimentological techniques. 3) Organisation and running of other relevant workshops for early career scientists in the field of sedimentology. 4) The giving of grants of up to £500 to individuals to support sedimentological research, in the following specific ways (i.) The Gill Harwood Memorial Fund offers financial support to female graduate students (of any age) and female sedimentologists (under the age of 30), of any nationality, who require funds to assist them in carrying out sedimentological fieldwork or for attendance at international meetings. (i.) The Trevor Elliott Fieldwork Fund offers financial support for postgraduate students (of any age) to undertake field-based sedimentological research. (iii.) The Early Career Grant offers financial support for postdoctoral researchers and those within 3 years (full time equivalent) of starting a permanent academic position to support sedimentological research (e.g. field or laboratory) or to attend international meetings. (iv.) The Steve Farrell Memorial Fund offers financial support to postgraduate students (of any age) attending field-based sedimentology conferences outside the UK.
The BSRG has complied with the duty in section 4 of the 2006 Act to have due regard to guidance on public benefit published by the Commission.
Achievements
The BSRG organised and ran the following events in the period 26[th] January 2024 to 30[th] November 2024: BSRG postgraduate fieldtrip, 13 – 15[th] May 2024, to Aberystwyth, Wales, attended by c. 15 students.
The Flume Workshop, 17th and 18th of October 2024, at Utrecht University, Utrecht, Netherlands, attended by c. 15 students
The BSRG gave out a total of £2000 in the form of small grants to individuals.
Financial review
The BSRG holds a reserves of c. £10000 in the current account in case of emergency outgoings exceeding expected yearly income.
The BSRG has a savings account with £25635 in reserve. The purpose is to generate interest for supporting BRSRG charitable endeavours. There is no reserves policy as yet in place for the reserves in the savings account.
There is no existing BSRG fund that is materially deficit.
