2. Objectives and Activities
Charitable Objectives
The charitable purpose of Northampton Tennis Foundation CIO is to promote, for the benefit of the inhabitants of Northampton and the surrounding area, the provision of facilities for the sport of tennis and for recreation or other leisure-time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances. The charity acts in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the condition of life of the said inhabitants.
Our Story and Vision
Northampton Tennis Foundation was established in 2023 by Simon Gallo , owner of Northampton Tennis CIC. For over 15 years, Northampton Tennis Coaching has been delivering high-quality tennis coaching and supporting local clubs across Northamptonshire. The Foundation was created to further this mission — assisting the growth of tennis in the region and enriching lives through participation in sport.
Tennis has often been perceived as an upper-class sport, creating barriers that limit participation. The Foundation is determined to challenge this stereotype by making tennis inclusive and accessible to everyone , regardless of background or circumstance.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), as of 2024, the East Midlands has the lowest employment rate in the UK, with Northamptonshire ranking in the bottom 20% across several socio-economic indicators. This underscores the need for community-led initiatives that offer positive opportunities for young people and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Our vision is to become the leading foundation in Northamptonshire dedicated to giving young and underprivileged individuals the chance to play and enjoy tennis, access sports therapy sessions, and improve their overall physical and mental wellbeing. We strive to create a more equitable sporting environment by inspiring as many people as possible to pick up a racket and join us.
We are committed to supporting the most disadvantaged and vulnerable individuals , with a strong focus on inclusivity for people with disabilities. Through accessible facilities, adaptive coaching, and community-driven programmes, we aim to remove barriers to participation and foster a sense of empowerment, belonging, and opportunity.
3. Achievements and Performance
2024 has been an incredible first full year for Northampton Tennis Foundation. With the support of partners, funders, and the community, we have expanded our reach and made significant progress toward our mission of making tennis accessible to all.
Key Achievements for 2024:
-
15 schools visited across Northamptonshire
-
1,486 hours of tennis coaching and community engagement delivered
-
2,421 people engaged through our sessions and outreach programmes
-
100% of children surveyed reported feeling happier after playing tennis
-
£64,442 in grants successfully secured to support programme delivery
-
£1,553.26 raised through community fundraising activities
These figures demonstrate the growing impact of the Foundation and the strong appetite within our communities for inclusive, accessible sporting opportunities. Our achievements reflect the dedication of our team, trustees, volunteers, and partners who have worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone, regardless of background, has the chance to play tennis.
Inclusive Programme:
From breakfast clubs to specialised sessions for SEND families, our programs have ensured tennis is accessible to individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
Community Events:
Through our partnerships and events, we have connected with hundreds of families and individuals, fostering a strong sense of community through sport.
Promoting Health & Wellbeing
Initiatives like Hit n Mix have encouraged adults and seniors to stay active while building social connections. Junior programme to be launched in 2025.
Youth Development
Our work with Refocus and local has not only introduced tennis to young people but also provided opportunities for personal growth, discipline, and teamwork.
4. Financial Review
A full financial review, including income, expenditure, and reserves, is held separately and forms part of the charity’s annual accounts for the period ended 31 December 2024.
In summary, the Foundation has achieved a positive first year of operation with strong grant support and effective use of resources aligned with our charitable objectives.
5. Plans for the Future
As we reflect on 2024, we are filled with gratitude for our supporters and excitement for the opportunities ahead. Our key priorities for 2025 include:
-
Expanding school programmes to reach more children, particularly in underserved areas.
-
Developing new business partnerships through an employee benefit scheme to diversify engagement and funding.
-
Enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities by introducing adaptive equipment and specialist coaching training.
-
Launching our first “Foundation Day” in May , a community fundraising and awareness event.
-
Hosting new community events to promote the joy of tennis and strengthen local participation.
These plans will help sustain and grow our impact, ensuring tennis continues to be a vehicle for wellbeing, inclusion, and social connection.
