Everybody is welcomè at St Leonard's Church. from within as wÈll 8S Outside the parish. Provision of a sacred
Spa￿ 8nd worship services. publbc rituals and ￿TeMonIaS such as baptisms, weddings and funerals, well as
njnning Sunday school groups which contributè to the spiritual and moral education of childrgn, a￿ some of Ihe
ways Ih3t we provide public benèfit through our activities. Our charitable donations and activities in p8rtn8rship
with other organisations las des(*bed in this report} al$0 contribute to the reopi¢nts' well-behng across a wide
sector of soaety both local and further afield.

wtth Kids and Youth groups). The 9am service average attendance was 30 people and the 11am service average
attendance was 114 adults plus 44 children and young peoplÈ. Aeross both services including children, the
averagÈ att8ThJance was 188.

We have multiple expressions of musical worshipwth a Choir singing al our 9am service and a band for our 11am
setvice. The songs are thoughtfully ¥hosen by our worship pAstor, Working wrth the speaker to link the talk and
theme of that wéèk, h8lping people deepen their relationship with Josus.
The Choir who attend th¢ Iraditional seN¢e mèet W8ekly to practico and again spend timè considering which
hymns should be sung on the Sunday ahead, Ènsuring they tie in with the talk.
During 2024 we continued to run an Alpha courso. This was aimed at péople from outside St Leonard's to hÈlp
explore the Christi8n faith. we saw a Tnix of regular church attendefrs Coming as well as those from local
communrlies.
We have continued to keep the leathing of scripture as a cèntral part of our servi¢es, exploring thÈ thèmes of
God's love, hopÈ, 1•8dership, worship. prayer and our identity In Chdsl. We ran a v8ri8ty of different Sunday
leaching sèriès ￿th three particular focusès, The Holy Spsrit. Mission and the Fruits of the Spirit.
St Leonard's Church attended Focus in 2024. This is our annual church wè8k•nd away with around 10.000
others from tho 'HTB Nelwork". about 100 from SÉ Leonard'8 *iended. There was a lol of laughter, ¢ommunity
building, worship and teaching. Some frorn Sl Leonard's camped onsite as well as olhers staying loeAlly and
Irovelling in each day. Focus is a great way to bring all ages of the congre9ation together. sharing meal times an¢J
building upon Christiaft fèllowship.
5 baptisms were held al Sl Lgonard's in 2024 Wè wer8 able to baptise a mEXture of thildren. youth and adulls
throughout the year which wa8 celebrated by al in the congiegation.
In 2024. Qui home groups colltinued across the parish and beyond. Thèsè seek to connect people new to the
church into community butalso grow thè church community closerto Jesus, and are key places whÈfe discipleship
and spiritual growth happens. About 60Vo of our congregations are in a horlle group. We have a wid8 v8riety of
horne groups cAt8ring to congregants of all ages, induding families with children.

This year at St Leonaid's, we had the incredible opportunlty lo hc*l 8 variety of different Christma$ sgrvices and
events for our d)urch family and wvjer corntnunity.
Cornmunil
market
The fesllve $oason started with a Christmas market, whith saw local vendors hostin9 Stalls as wall as members
of our own congregation. The day was dry and we were able lo enjoy a live band playing festive songs outside
the church. More than ￿ peoplo from thÈ ¢*mmunity were welcomed into the d)urth during a 4 hour peri￿.
Proffits went towards our ChrislTlla5 ￿MpaIgn partnering with local food bank8 and charities.

We partngrod wth the Foghorn p￿> to provide 8ing-aloryJ carols for the cL)mmunity. W8 s•t up outside the wb
and were thrilled so many passèrsby joined in. Vve also held a 'coffee and Goiols, event on a Thursday moming
duwing one of oui community CAfé sèssions. The church was full of people from the local community wanting to
celebrate the Chrisltn8s season, including some residents from 8 local care home as well as clients of 'gat¢way
wornen, 8 chartty set up forthose who have suffèr8d from domestic violence.

We hosted several carol seNices over the Christmas period including..
Kings school Christmas Èerwce for over 280 students along With paren15 and teachers
A servi¢e of traditional and conternporary carols., there were 211 people in attendance. This had a vgry
high level of production and was only made possible by am8zing volunteèrs from oui congregations.
2 carol sèrviees airlled at families and the younger generations. We hired in a petting Zoo - whi(* wa
V8ry p¢)pular. We had 456 people attend the services induding 174 under 18's. Many families from the local
comrnunity attended forthe first time. including those who had become involv8d in thè ehurth community through
our Liwe Lions mid-week toddlèr group.

Wewere pleased to host a Christingle semcè. somÈlhing whi¢h we had paused in 2023. The serviff was beautiful
and indudÈd all ages creating Chrislingles lo lake home. The church lookèd stunning as the night drew in and
candles were lit, and children sat engaged with the adults Ihal brought them. A Midniyht Comrnunion service was
held on Christmas Eve, with SO ￿Ople in attendan￿ joining logElh¢r1g Sop in Christma6 Day. Finally, we had an
811-age Christmas Day Family Cèlèbration, where 129 people joined in with carols and fun for all the family.
St Leonard's had an incredible Chri81mas season, w&lcoming over 1000+ pècyle from our congregation and the
local Community to our setvices and events.

L#oJJard's. We had such positive f8gdbaGk from all of them. Th&yp8￿c￿larty 8ppreGff8ted the delicious food-

h￿￿e leftovers and another w8s so pleased to take some home for her son. They said if wés b W8nn and

Towards the ènd of2Q23 wa opÈnèd up a community café spac8 on Thursday mornings. Our assouat8 Vi(>T. Ali
attends each week, and this gives us an opportunty to en98ge with the community. offering pray8r 8nd éeeper
conv¢tsalions with those exploring their own faith.
One of things which we see as b¢ing central to the life of the church is prayer. During earfy 2022 we began 8
prayer moming at 7aM every Wednesday during terrn time. We have often described this a3 Ihe°engine room. tsf
the church as Il luels our weekly rhythms. This is something we ¢orrtinued throughout 2024.

which was held in the main Ghurch. This time wa5 positive and impaefful for all attending. hearing from Ioc81
business leadets sharing how they navigated through challenging lirnes, some speakers were able lo bring a faith
element in, sharing how as Christians they faced some challenges. Food was shared and enjoyed each wook.

A 7-we8k course which was hosted in the rn8in church. tha thurth was set up b¢aulifully, allowing couplès to
connect, share food and drink before thè course started. Workbooks were provided for all couples attÈrtdirtg to
take hotne and contiNe the discussions that had. The atmosphere was relax8d and was designed lo replicate a
'date nighf setting for all cwples.

It was a huge SUCLess with around 100 thildren and 50 adults attending. The churchyard was brightly lil and
lookèd warm and inviting. ThE party was castle Iherned., it was a community oulreath as rnany came who had not
been to the church before. We were able to be a light in community artd offer wami smiles on a dark night of
the year.

been attending, exutingly w8 hav8 seen 8 cross-over in attendance frcKn a Thursday to a Sunday seFvice.

We launched our first youth Alpha series held in the main ¢hurth- we had plenty of team sign up Ir) help which
enabled thè young peO￿e to be put irrto different 9roup8. The youth attending ate Pizza. watched the video
ntènt, rèleded on their wews and had ijiscussions around faith. The cours8 8ndÈd with the Alpha Hoty Spirit
day on the final Saturday which induded lirne for praying and worshlpplng together.

Througts)ut 2024, our rislng geneTalions pastor went lo Kings school lo offer a safe Spa￿ where young pèoplè
could relax and discuss topics around faith. The club was encouragingly very well attended.
Ourvicar and rising generations pastor had the honourof helping put on school services at Chri81mas and Easter.
ThÈsè services were moving and gave opportunities for children to r8spond and takè ¢omfflunion.
Wo hosted a Christm85 mè81 for all involved in a local charity called'off Tho Fence,. It W88 8 privilege to open our
doors lo Ihose going through Challenging times. as well as Voluntee￿ and staff fflembers of the charity.
We enjoyed a full Chiisltnas meal, pudding and plenty of Chri8trnas cheer. Carols were sung and 91tt bags w&ra
handed out to eath pefson and family that attènded.

The Church
The green gym continues to oper*e in the Churchyard, they are an extemal 9roup who tend lo the churchyard
#èveral times per month. Thi8 is a beneffcial tme for all. Once tasks arè complète in the churchyard they enjoy
lea, coffee, and homemad8 eakÉs inside the church on a Thurs¢Jay. It is g￿¥t lo have them enjoy the newly
refvrbished ¢hurch in the community café space and unwind after a hard morning of gardèning.
In August 2024, we opened Ihe Ghurch for 4 Sundays hosting the well known and lovad 'erearn tea. events.
Each Sunday aftewoon the church was fill•d wtth plenty of cakes and people from the communtty.
Throughout2024 we ¢ontinued to lend the Church and hall spaces to the Diocese of Chichesl6r for spÈcifie Èvents
and trRining including a churchwardens visitation service and various Oiocesan events plus Environment days.

The Churchyard
Oui large churchyard wlh over 500 gravos is a peacefijl green Space in an U￿an a￿a. Many people, particularly
Ih05e with no gardens, regularly sit in the churchyarLI lo ¢al their lunch or comè during the day to enjoy Ihg pea
and quiet. fresh air and the greenery.
We are pleased to have a m¢mLpr of St Leonard's on the secret garden ¢ommittèe representing the chu￿. we
keep in dose cornmunication working together wlh regards lo the welcoming spa¢e and churchyard.
The Green Gym, who g8rden together for their physical aThJ ment81 well-being and companionship. They visit
monthly, weather perrnitting. and enjoy thè challenge of cleaTlng the brambles and uncovering previously hidden
gTaves and spiing bulbs. The Green Gym love th6 tr8nquillity of the churchyard and have worked tirelessty
throughout 2024 to maintain the giounds. The group enjoy join the communty caf8 oneè they have finished their
tasks, re￿XIng with tea and homèmadè cakes baked by one of the PCC members.
Provl8lon of tanglblè support to thepoorandneedy and oth¢r charftsble glvlng
We celebrated our Haryesl Festlval In Cttu￿h and brought food donations for our local food bank, The Purple
People's Kitchon in Portslad•, which we continue lo support. We have a permanent colleGlion basket insidè of thè
hurch whefe both thè ￿ngTegatIOn and members of the community may leave items they wlsh to donate to the
foodbank.
One of the charities we have been working with is G8tew8y Wornen. They are a local charity seeking to hdp
vulnerable and isolated women across the city. At Christmas time we helped by delivering hampers to som& of
the women they support. We had fÉédback of happy memories of St Leonard's from gtsme of the women whosg
parents w8re married in the thurch and som8 who were baplised as babSe$. We have enjoyed welcoming the
group along lo the community cafe.
The Safe Families oiganisalion speks lo provide support for farnilies in the local community that might be
Struggling. We worked wth tham by making"Jars of Kindne5s' on Molherfs day in 2024 for the mothers of those
families.
In 2024. we joined wlh the Love Christmas campaign and delivered over 280 "Ba9s of Kindness. through 4
different local Cha￿e$,. Gataway Women, Fishersgal$ & Purple People Foodbank. plus YMCA hostels (including
George Wlliam & William Collier hou5pI. We partn6r8d with LoveYourNeighbour cha¥ity. part of the Church
Revitalisation Trust, who match fundèd our donations whith enabled us to 6erve thé commLJnity in this way.

Rosie Dracolt ¢gntinues as PSO wilh Bronwyn Pe8reÈ a8 Safeguardiny lead. Ali Marshall has oversight on all
reported 8afeguarding concems. We continue lo consult with the DI0￿$8 Saféguarding team for any safeguarding
eoncems that need a fvller conversation and for advic• 8nd guidance. We ￿ntInUe lo use My Conram to ￿POrt
safegU8rdlng concems. Any concerns that are recorded arg followed up with a conversation with the PSO to
discem what ifany furthor action may b? required. A total of 15 ¢oncerns were r&portÈd in 2024. Of these 3 were
discuss8d with the Diorw safeguarding team and followed up wllh the indwiduals.
AII PCC members were reminded that they need to have a ujrrent DBS complètè CO and C1 safegu8rdSrvJ
training.
In April wo completed Level One of the Simple Quality Protects 8tandard as requirèd by the Dioceso.
In October itwas agreed that Rosie should be added as a DBS recruiterto support Bronwyn with the admini$tr81ion
of this.
Flnanclal Revlew
The lolal receipts on general uniBslricled funds wèrè £238.976 and are detailed in thè Financial Report.
UnrestrictÈd expenditure amounted to £168,989.
The total receipts on roslricted lunds w8ie £64.510 and arè detailed in the Financial Report. Restricted fvnd
expenditure arrounted to £100,337, with the balance being transfewTed from gen6r81 unrestricted funds. The
fflajority of this transfer is to pay staff costs which are not funded by the SDF grant.
Roslricted funds at the end of t1￿ yèar have a value of £1,931.
The sufplus for the year of £35.756. is budgeted to be spent in 2025.
The balance shèet for the end of 2024 shows cash-in-hand of £138,078.
Together with a faw minor oulslanding inv(xcos. the lolal current assets 88 al 31112r24 £138,110.
Togelherwith acttu8d bills. induding thè balance of the Building Project. the totèl current liabilities as al 31112124
were £184.198. £141.859 represents repayable loans, rèpayable over the next 5 yeais.
Income And trxpendlturo
The main sources of income were through règular and one-off giving. and amounted to £156,712. Gift Ald of
£29,526 was dairned from HMRC. VAT of £11,133 was daimed from th8 Listed Place of Vvorship Grant Sch8me.
The Assoiiale Vicar, Churchwardens and Treasurer looked in detail 81 the project ￿$tingS. the 2024 surplus, the
cash in hand at Ihè end of 2024 and the goneral trends in incom¢ ID the church through giving and other grants.
With this in mind, 8 detailed budget for 2025 wa8 drawn up and approvéd by the PCC whith shows that, after loan
repayments, church exp•nditure in 20251$ expeded to exceed in(x)me by up ID £49,000.
Staff Costs
St Leonard's has a small staff tearn o)vering opèrations. worship and youlhlchildren's work. These staff costs
were initially funded through the SDF grant, bul this Is tapering down. and St Leonard's is gradually paying morè
t¢ward8 the staff costs. In 2024, thè grant covered £61,695 of the total slaff o)sls of £89,101. For 2025, the grant
18 budgeted lo bo £33,520.

Resèrve* policy
It is PCC policy to maintain cash at bank of at least 3 months, worth of essential Operations expenditure, as
onlingery against unfores•en situations. Based on our budget for 2025, this policy means holding a bank
balance of at least £40,700 Ihrough¢ul the year. We sa115ffied this policy throughout 2024. We èxpect to have
sufficient cash flow to continuo to mèÉt the policy, and to pay bills and loan repayments when they fall duc.

2.10 Judgements and key soureès of estimatlon uneèrtalnty
In the application of the charity's accounting policies, the trustees are requirèd to make jLJdgernenls
eslim81es and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readi￿ apparent
from other sources. The ¢51imales and asswaled assumptions are based on historical experiènce and
other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may drffer from these estimates.
The estirn8les and undÈtying assumptions are revi8wad on an ongoing b88is. Revisions to accounting
estimatèg are recognlsed in the period in which the 8stimate is revised.
