## Old Farnley and District Community Association

Trustees' report (continued) for the year ended 31 December 2024

## **Objectives and activities**

## **The charity's objects**

(a) To promote the benefits of the inhabitants of Old Farnley and district and the neighbourhood, (hereinafter called "the area of benefit") without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions, by associating together with the said inhabitants and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure-time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants; (b) to establish or secure the establishment of a community centre (hereinafter called "the centre") and to maintain and manage the same (whether alone or in co-operation with any local authority or other person or body) in furtherance of these objects.

## **The charity's main activities**

The objectives of the community centre are to offer a range of diverse opportunities and support for everyone within the community. The association offers a luncheon club which is run each Monday to those living within the Farnley & District Community area. Leeds City Council's Youth Service operate from the centre with two sessions, one for juniors and one for seniors.

Some other activities include Mums & Tots, and Early Years session for those aged 0-5 which is run by Leeds City Council’s Early Years.

The community centre is also available for private hire functions and is available for longer term hires and hosts Councillors surgeries each month. Tuesday evenings offer games of Cash Bingo which is accessible to everyone.

Starting in January of 2024 was the Farnley Community Café which has run each Friday 8am -12pm. The cost of food has been kept reasonable and affordable and during the winter period the community centre has been awarded small funding to become a Welcome space which has enabled the community centre to supply free warm drinks and cereal/toast and a warm welcoming space to those in need during the colder periods.

## **Public benefit statement**

In setting our objectives and planning our activities our Trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and in particular Old Farnley and District and the neighborhood.

## **Achievements and performance**

The community centre continues to have renovations and remodeling works completed to improve its offerings to the public as well as make the building a more accessible and welcoming space as well as meeting it legal compliances and obligations.

Major works during this year have included the installation of a gas mains supply to the building which has enabled the community centre to upgrade its heating, to gas central heating.

The hall has benefitted from new K2 radiators (5 in total), along with radiators installed in all toilets, entrance lobby and office spaces, which has helped to increase ambient temperatures throughout the building along with being more efficient than the older A/C units that were in use in the hall space only.

Along with the gas and boiler installation the building has benefitted from having a new secondary wall built in the hall along the main exterior wall which has given a cleaner & more aesthetically pleasing look but has meant that the wall could be insulated & have secondary double glazing installed to help with controlling heat loss from the building. Compliments have been well received from a number of the groups that use the space and have praised the new heating system.

To maximise on the gas installation the kitchen has also benefitted from having a new dual fuel range cooker which has made the cooking of meals more time efficient and in turn more energy efficient. The kitchen has also had a new cooker hood installed, griddle hot plates and a new backup upright freezer.

General maintenance has been carried out at the community centre and the community centre has benefitted

from zero down time due to faults and failures.

Other works in the hall included alterations to the entrance, by creating a new entrance lobby as you entered the hall. The double doors were moved forward, and a new doorway was installed into the rear offices that have also undergone refurbishment. The offices have benefitted from new heating, redecoration and new flooring.

The last major works for the 2024 period at the community centre was renovation works to the ladies’ toilets. The existing facilities were dilapidated and in need of urgent remedial works. The whole of the ladies’ toilets was stripped out, and new plumbing and sanitary ware was installed along with the addition of baby change facilities. New cubicles were built, and the room was decorated.

Legal compliance has been at the forefront of all works and operations at Farnley Community centre. We continue to make alterations to our policies and procedures to ensure that we have robust plans in place.

In addition to day-to-day runnings we have run a number of events over the course of the year, some of which include our well-placed Christmas event which attracted circa 125 young people to see Santa.

The community centre celebrated its 50[th] anniversary and a celebration was held on the 20[th of] April to celebrate the day, along with a plaque unveiling to the late Anne Braviner. The event was well attended, and we had free entertainment along with a tabletop event within the community centre.

The community centre continues to establish itself within the community and is growing year on year with plans for further growth in the next financial year.

## **Financial review**

The net payments for the year were a loss of £2,623, all relating to unrestricted funds. Albeit that the charity made a loss this is in large due to the much-needed renovations and modernisation that was needed at the community centre.

The charity had a savings account that was closed by Virgin bank due to the account been an historical account, and that balance was transferred into the charities main account in October of 2024 for the value of £13274.73, which is what has been used to support the healthy balance of the charity whilst the renovations have been completed.

## **Reserves policy**

The charity's free reserves, at the year end were £16,274.

The charity currently has no formal reserves policy but is aware of the need for one and will discuss this during the year.
