breeding bricks into new housing

reviewing planning applications. engaging
with planning authorities and biodiversity
officers to insist on Swift bricks being a
condition of lannin

we organised display stands and
Swift walks across the county to
inform the public and showcase the
excitement of observing Swifts at
their colonies
we established our website. facebook
and twitter feeds to infomi and
interact with Swift enthusiasts across
the county and beyond
we gave several Swift lalks to local
conservation and community groups
we extended our activities more
generally by means of articles on
Swifts in local n8wspapers, parish
magazines and other publications
Identifying existing nest sites:
by extensive use of volunteer groups
to survey in the breeding season we
contributed over 500 Swift nest
records to the Derbyshire Swift
Survey nest site location databas8
and, subsequently, the Derbyshire
Biological Records Centre
Protecting exlsting nest sites:
we worked with a brewery chain and
a community housing association
with properties in a Swift "hotspof to
ensure the Swifts bre8ding on
buildings owned by both
organisations would be protected
Encouraging the provision of additional
nest sites across the county:
we installed over 150 Swift nest
boxes across the county on private
homes. schools and churches
lobbying of the 10 planning
authorities in the county resulted in
several hundred Swift bricks being
conditioned on new developments

Network Swifts & Planning Group., this was
set up to establish optimal m8thods of
interacting with local planning authorilies.
The Swifts Local Network is a national
informal ne￿Ork of over 100 Swift groups
located across the UK.
In 2024 we attended the 7th International
Swift Conference held in Trieste, Ital
