## **Semiliki Trust Annual Report 2024 – 2025** _Dr Olivier (Rt), Director, with Dr David, Aru medical coordinator (centre) in lab, Mahagi Hospital._ Semiliki Trust continued to flourish in 2024 – 25, impacting the work of our partners in north eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The total income of £127,264, up 50% on the year before, was used provided regular support for seven medical coordination teams, three nursing colleges, university studies for nine students, support for an orphanage, a school for orphans, tailoring and other livelihood projects, and church growth – an incredible array and diversity of activities supported by Semiliki’s relatively modest inputs. Running costs in the UK are paid out-of-pocket by the Semiliki team, so all the money raised was spent on projects in the DRC (except for bank charges on transfers totalling £405 in the UK), and Semiliki continues to be **one of the best value-for-money charities** . Our total expenditure in 2024 – 25 was £104,879, with a healthy balance in the bank of unrestricted funds. ## **Activities in 2024 – 2025** ## **Medical Coordination** We support seven medical teams based along 1,500 km of northeast Democratic Republic of Congo (bordering South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi), who show incredible bravery working in this most dangerous part of DRC where over one hundred armed militia groups are active. We send tranches of $1000 to each team three times a year. They use this according to their priorities, buying medicines, small items of equipment, spare parts for vehicles and motorbikes. We send additional funds for purchase of larger items, and it is the coordination teams that oversee the larger building projects (see below). _Map showing principal sites of our partner projects. From each of these centres there is a network of 5 to 15 health centres and hospitals._ Beni medical coordination used funds to build a wall to protect the Kasabinyole Hospital site, and bought a laptop. We also sent money for essential food and soap for peoples displaced when their villages were attacked and burned, who found refuge in Beni, North Kivu and at Bushusha, Idjwi Island, and displaced from Goma to Bukavu, also in South Kivu. We increased support to the national coordination team to allow them to increase travel and supervisory activities, doing on site control of accounts, promote better quality diagnosis and treatment and care for patients. _Amongst many other essential needs, Aru coordination bought chairs for Mahagi Hospital._ ## **Construction and equipping hospitals and health centres** _Dr Moïse (Lt) in new operating block at Masiki Hospital, Butembo. Semiliki contributed $10,000 to the project. The operating block is above the diagnostic block._ _Nearly completed maternity at St Matthieu Hospital_ This year Semiliki supported construction of a maternity block at St Mathieu, Bukavu, an operating block at Masiki, Butembo, a laboratory in Kamango along with rehab of the op theatre struck by lightning and a lightning conductor, rehabilitation of Aru Cité operating block and construction of an intensive care unit, and a new admin block for Aru Nursing University. Biochemistry machine purchased with ST money_ Bukiringi Hospital bought a solar system for the rehabilitated outpatients facility. _Renovation of maternity and Ekanga health centre, Aru coordination._ _New intensive care block, Aru Cité Hospital_ _New outpatients unit, and rehabilitation at Kindia Health Centre_ ## **Nursing Universities** We support three nursing universities in Aru, Butembo and Bukavu. ## **Student study grants** We sent study grants for nine students, 3 doing medicine, 4 nursing, 1 biochemistry, 1 anaesthetics and one doing a masters in accountancy, and a further 4 students at Boga nursing college. _Dr Denise, Director of St Matthieu Hospital, Bukavu is also doing her specialisation at Panzi hospital in surgery – many of the techniques learnt there she is hoping to bring to St Matthieu._ ## **Compassion Family Centre, Butembo** The Compassion Family Centre supports children orphaned by conflict. Our transfers of $1,500 three times a year are used to buy food, including formula milk for babies, for medical care of children, washing soap, firewood, support for education and much more. Semiliki is supporting Compassion’s programme of adoption with wider family members or local families and to provide skills for young adults to set up independent livelihoods. Because many of the orphans experienced such extreme trauma when their parents were killed, they will still need time at the centre to recuperate and get nutritionally and physically healthy before they are ready to move to adoption homes (when these can be found). _Mbambu and Kasereka going out to find family members of the children for repatriation with the wider family ,and talking to an aunt of one of the children after a muddy ride. The motorbike was financed by Semiliki_ _At Compassion’s car workshop where adults and older children learn valuable mechanics skill. This car will be completely rehabilitated … these guys are geniuses!_ ## **Orphans and vulnerable women in Goma** Our support helps give a cooked meal to vulnerable 366 children twice a week at the school in Goma and pays for small incentives to the nurse, nutritionist and cook. _Rehab of the nutrition centre at Goma orphan school, supported by Semiiki_ ## **Church growth** In Aru, Rév Etsegeri used funds to repair a motorbike, to equip the Christian education office and print materials, and payed for transport for a training conference up in Kumuru for Christian teachers.
