TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT – 1 OCTOBER 2024 to 30 SEPTEMBER 2025
OBJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
- Human Values in Healthcare Forum (“HVHF”) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (“CIO”). It’s Constitution which was adopted on 8[th] December 2023 identifies it’s charitable objects as follows:
The objects of the CIO are, for the public benefit:

(i) to preserve and advance health and to relieve sickness, or human suffering, by promoting the development and preservation of human values in health and social care; and
-
(ii) to advance the education of health and social care practitioners and the general public on the subject of human values in health and social care and to promote evidencebased research in all aspects of that subject and disseminate the useful results.
In this clause, “human values”, in the context of health and social care, includes the values of compassion, respectfulness, integrity, ethics and justice.

HVHF is committed to promoting and disseminating the values of compassion, respectfulness, integrity, ethics and justice in the practice of healthcare professionals, their associates and their staff and amongst the general public. To that end, HVHF’s activities comprise, principally, the organisation of and participation in conferences, seminars, lectures and workshops.

When planning its activities for the year, the Trustees paid due regard to the guidance issued by the Charities Commission on public benefit.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
- The achievements and performance for the year may be summarised as follows:
17[th] October 2024 : A free webinar as part of a ‘ Valuesthon ’ for World Values Day. Generosity in healthcare – how do we bring it to life?
An interactive webinar with Giskin Day principal teaching fellow, Imperial College, Jens Foell, GP and GP trainer North Wales, and a patient’s who gave his own perspective.
30[th] November 2024: Dr Paquita de Zulueta , chair of the charity, gave the annual lecture for a large gathering (100+) organised by the Janki Foundation entitled:
Restoring human values, reclaiming the soul in healthcare .
From November 2024: The charity set up a new initiative : Facilitated ethics-based conversations, entitled ‘reflethics’.
These conversations were open to all those working in health and social care, offering a confidential, supportive space to reflect on situations or encounters in the clinical workplace which have created moral disquiet or perplexity and reflect ethical or values-based issues.
The monthly lunchtime drop-in on-line conversations were facilitated by two experienced facilitators with clinical ethics and educational backgrounds.
The aims of Reflethics are to:

➢ Increase clarity and understanding of personal/professional values and beliefs.

➢ Encourage individuals to adopt a broader, richer perspective by engaging with other perspectives within group reflection.
-
➢ Receive support for moral distress and associated emotional distress.
-
➢ Increase confidence and resilience in addressing moral events in the future
-
➢ Increase interdisciplinary understanding leading to potential for improved teamwork and collaboration.
The charity is grateful to the Della Fish Foundation providing funds to support the initiative for the year starting from May 1[st] , 2025.
15[th] September 2025 : Rehumanising healthcare in a divided world symposium . Paquita de Zulueta engaged in a debate with Professor Jeremy Howick at the Global Empathy in Healthcare symposium . The debate entitled “AI and chat-bots cannot provide empathic care was lively and much enjoyed - Paquita offered 10 reasons to support the motion.
27[th] September 2025: The charity offered its annual replenishing event for all those working in health and social care entitled The renewal of Hope – the art of the possible .
The broad aim of the event was to show how a humane, holistic, systemic and communitybased approach can be developed to tackle complex issues in healthcare and challenge unsustainable, dehumanising models of care. The event also gave the opportunity for

participants to create their own stories of hope, to make new connections and insights, and to gain practical knowledge and skills. The event was held at the retreat centre The Royal Foundation of St Katharine, London.
We were fortunate to have inspirational speakers who offered us examples of how other ways of care are possible - creative, humane, person- and community-centred.
The programme included:
Creative solutions – Community based approaches
Dr Sheraz Ahmad – The Trieste model - A new community-based approach for mental healthcare. Dr Helen Kingston – Compassionate Communities – the Frome example showing how this initiative transformed healthcare in Frome, significantly reducing hospital readmissions whilst fostering a flourishing workforce and community.
Dr Jane Myat – Creating a community of practice with an interstitium of care and listening spaces. Sharing stories of hope: interactive workshop (appreciative inquiry) facilitator Paquita de Zulueta and others.
– Seeing the world (and healthcare) anew another way is possible
Emma Barnard - Intersections of Art and Medicine: Collaborations with Surgeons and Patients. Emma described her current work as artist in residence at Queen’s Square and Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals, working with patients suffering from inoperable meningiomas and xerostomia (dry mouth) respectively.
Dr Nirja Joshi – Dance session with a General Practitioner who offers dance classes for wellbeing.
Dr Hugo Jobst – Humanising healthcare – a pragmatic approach to system reform – Hugo illustrated how the current system for medical education is profoundly dehumanising and how medical education can and should be changed.
Hammad Khan Rethinking Health: in his powerful talk Hamaad gave us similar reflections on the limitations of the medical education system as well as our current health system - characterised by overdiagnosis, overprescribing and depersonalised care. He offered a prescription for transformational change.
10th March 2025 : Paquita de Zulueta was invited to speak with philosopher Caesar Atuire and palliative care nurse Jill Hayes for Convergence Oxford about sharing decisions in the context of suffering and dying .
11[th] March 2025 : Paquita de Zulueta participated in a ‘ Podcasthon ” in conversation with Roxana Parra of Mind your Mind and talked about compassionate leadership and sustaining compassion in healthcare.
May 2025: Paquita de Zulueta was invited to speak to 300+ third year medical undergraduates at the university of Birmingham on Disaster response in the context of the

Grenfell Fire with reflections of her own experience as volunteer and GP lead for the NHS Grenfell outreach team.
10th April 2025 : Dr Frances da Cunha was invited to speak for the British Geriatric Society Spring conference about What do people value most at the end of their lives? Frances continues to work with community and integrated care projects.
Also in 2025 :
Tori Cooper , member of the core committee, director of nursing at University Hospitals of Sussex, Worthing and Southlands sites, helped to develop the initiative “Patients first at the heart of everything we do" . Tori is responsible for professional leadership, quality and safety, patient experience and general operations of the day.
Dr Rupal Shah , committee member, has been organising with Jens Foell and Intellect Books conversations with lead thinkers as a series of podcasts on healthcare. Rupal has recently coedited a book entitled: Finding meaning in healthcare: looking through the hermeneutic window.
HVHF continues to collaborate with other charities, organisations and charities that have similar aims and values.

- Total receipts during the year amounted to £12,906.

Restricted funds received during the year amounted to £4,920, being a donation from the Della Fish Foundation for use in connection with the Charity’s Reflethics initiative.

On restricted funds, the net result for the period was an excess of Receipts over Payments of £2,600. The balance on restricted funds carried forward at 30[th] September 2025 was £2,600.

Adding the bank balance brought forward at 30 September 2024 (£4,752), the balance carried forward on both restricted and unrestricted funds (combined) at 30[th] September 2025 was £10,931.

In the period ended 30[th] September 2025, HVHF did not:

(1) Benefit from any assets other than its current account balance. (2) Maintain any investments. (3) Benefit from any Endowment Funds. (4) Benefit from any loans.

RESERVES POLICY
- In the period ended 30[th] September 2025, HVHF did not maintain a formal reserves policy. Its objective was to maintain a modest favourable balance on its current account to cover the costs of administration and other occasional expenses, as well as to support the costs of the Annual Summer Event.
VOLUNTEERS

HVHF would like to thank the volunteers who have so wisely and generously provided advice and support by serving on the Advisory Group and on the Core Group of Advisors.

HVHF would also like to thank all of those who provided administrative assistance whose contributions often went over and above their obligations.
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

HVHF is a foundation CIO, meaning that the same persons are its members and its trustees. It is registered with HM Revenue & Customs, and it is registered to receive Gift Aid.

- The Trustees as at the date of this report are the three original Trustees. Dr. de Zulueta and Mr. Marrin have served since 8[th] December 2023. Dr. da Cunha also served from 8 December 2023 for 2 years. Upon the expiry of that two-year term, she was re-appointed for a further three years. The three Trustees are:

As regards the numbers of Trustees and their selection, the Constitution provides:

(1) That there must be at least 3 trustees, the maximum number being 12.

(2) That trustees are appointed or re-appointed for a term of 3 years by a resolution passed at a meeting of the Trustees.

(3) In appointing Trustees due consideration is to be given to ensuring that the Trustees have, between them, the skills, knowledge and experience necessary for the effective administration of the CIO.

The financial statements of HVHF have been prepared on the Receipts and Payments basis.

In the year ended September 2025, HVHF:

(1) Held no fixed assets.

(2) Did not benefit from any Endowment Funds.

(3) Maintained no investments and received no investment income.

(4) Maintained a current bank account with Santander UK plc.

(5) Did not maintain a deposit account.

In the year ended September 2025, HVHF did not receive Gift Aid, although it was registered as a charity for tax purposes on 10 October 2024 (HMRC Reference ZD34627).

HVHF did not give any guarantee where any potential liability under the guarantee was outstanding at the date of the Financial Statements for the year ended 30 September 2025 of which these Notes form part.
