Human Values in Healthcare Forum l~HVHF"I is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation
I"CIO"l. It's Constitution which was adopted on 8 December 2023 idenrifies it's charitable
objects as follows..
The objects of the CIO are, for the public beneth"t=
to preseNe and advance health and to relieve sickness. or human sufferin& by
promoting the developmeni and preservation of human values in health and social

to advance the education of health and Social practitioners and the general public
the subjeu of human values in health and Social care and to promote evidence-
based Te5e3rch in all aspects of that svbject and disseminate the useful results.
In thi5 clause. -human values" in the context of health and social care, includes the values of
compassion. respettfulness. integrity, ethics and justice.
HVHF is committed to promoting and disseminating the values of compassion. respectfulness,
integrity, ethics and justice in the practice of healthcare professionals, their associates and
their staff and amongst the general public. To that end, HVHVS activities comprise, principally,
the organisation of and pa￿cipatiOn in conferences, seminars, lectures and workshops.
When planning its activities for the year, the Trustee5 paid due regard to the guidance issued
by the Charities Commission orb public benefit.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
THE COLLABORATIVE CENTRE FOR VAWES BASEO PRACTICE {CCVBP): 25" January 2024
CCVBP generously hosted the HVHF to convene a multidisciplinary symposium Ihybridl St
Catharine's College Oxford entitled=
°Artificial Intelligence and Therapeutic Relationshi￿ in Healthcare: Challenges and
Opportunities. An inte*distiplinary enquirf
The broad aim of this symposium was to bring together academics and clinicians from a varietv
of disciplines to explore this issue and arrive at an enriched perspective with potential
pathways for sustaining relational. compassionate care in the context of this rapidly evolving
'di5ruptive' technology.
The topics included:
Introduction and the Im￿rtanCe of relational care. Dr Paquita de Zulueta.
Can Carebots care? Applying insights from care ethics and virtue ethics. Prof Ann
Gallagher.
Can chatbots be as good at empathy as human practitiortrers? An evidence-based
perspethve. Profjeremy Howick.
Thirbk outside the bot- Co-design for reswnsible innovation in digital mental health.
Gabriela Pavarini PhD.
How can we ensure Al is trustworthy and protects the core value5 of the NHS? Jessica
Morley PhD.
Who is the expert in the room? Trust, expertise, and the impact of Al on the doctor-
patient relationship. Angeliki Kerasidou PhD.

Speakers included Professor John Gillies, Profeswr Stewart Mercer and Professor of

The symposium was a hybrid event and a recording was made awailable on the Edinburgh
Futures InstitLrte website. the HVHF website and to all those who attended.
HVHF ANNUAL ALL-DAY IN-PERSON EVENT: 6 JULY 2024
HVHF'S Annual replenishing event for those working in heaFth and social care was held on

Saturdai, 6 July 2024 all day, in-per50n at the peaceful 'urban Oasi￿ the Royal Foundation of
St Katharine Retreat Centre, London.
This day for connection, replenishment and renewal. offered space for unhurried
conversatr"on5, for sharing stories and inspirational land p￿CtiCall ideas.
Using an appreciative approach, parkncipants explored how one can develop and sustain kind
and carefL51 care. reclaim and restore more relational. meaningful - even joyful- approaches
in a system that is progressively becoming more mechanistic, dehumanisin& fragmented and
profoundly alienating- both for those who give and those who receive care.
There was an opportunity to listen to how people at the coal face. from students to leaders,
foster humanity and empathy for themselves and others. There was the opportunity to
participate in dance, creab.ve exercises. to enjoy ex￿lIent food and companionship in the calm
and welcoming oasis of the Royal Foundation of St Katharine.
There were 40 Participants in all.
The programme comprised a series of presentations with opportunib.es for disCUssions-

JUNE 2024: SponSOfed Walk: The Camino"
In early June. Trustees Dr Paquita de Zuluets and John Marrin KC walked the Camino Primitivo
from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela - some 2(M) miles over a period of 16 days. They
managed to raise some £4.839 in donations for the HVHF.

RESERVES POLICY
14.
In the period ended 30 September 2024. HVHF did not maintsin a formal reserves policy. Its
objective was to maintain a modest favourdble balance on tts current account to cover the
costs of administrdtion and other occasional expenses. as well as to support the costs of the
Annual Summer Event.
VOLUNTEERS
15.
HVHF would like to thank the volunteers who have so wisely and generously provided advice
and support by serving on the Advisory Group and on the Core Group of Advisors.

HVHF would also like to thank all of those who provided administrative assistance whose
contributions often went over and above their obligations.
