## Introduction

Welcome to the Anvil Projects annual report for the year ended 31st March 2025. We serve the local sanctuary seeker and diaspora community in Tower Hamlets and surrounding areas. Since our inception in November 2023 we have built strong, collaborative relationships with a number of community and charitable groups. We are grateful for the warm welcome we have received from these groups, working side by side in times which are challenging on many fronts for those who seek sanctuary and those who stand alongside them. Gratitude and acknowledgement goes to our project leaders Amanda, Ewen, Pippa and Richard. Thank you team for your devotion, creativity and initiative. Special thanks to our committed volunteers who give of their time and talents. In responding to needs and encouraging sanctuary seeking people to bravely mix with others and get to know their new community we have been rewarded with a growing trust from our service users.

The Emergency English classes are also a time when connections and relationships are formed beyond that of teacher-student or service provider. The cultures which many of our participants come from are very relational and they respond more to a relational approach rather than an institutional approach.

Cooking with English provides women a welcoming safe space to cook, to learn English, to host and regain dignity, and most importantly to build a sense of belonging and community.

Doodle Chat has had to pivot recently, from operating in Home Office accommodation that was stood down, to finding space in the London Islamic Centre that is generously provided for free. It sees many men arrive traumatised and wary. Many show signs of depression and hopelessness. The weekly class provides respite from boredom, allows them to gather with other residents and make new friendships, practice English with native speakers, and to be signposted to other services where appropriate.

Alongside the provision of classes, in partnership with the Royal Palaces Community Access Scheme we offer trips to the nearby nationally significant Tower Of London. Here, participants see the long history of the area they live in, they begin to understand something of British culture, and they see London beyond the boundaries of their familiar residence.

The Wednesday drop-in with Life Seekers aid has been a time when Anvil Projects have connected with hundreds of men and many women too. The various services delivered have been a way into providing many individuals with support and connection. The networking opportunities between Anvil workers and other agencies staffing the drop-in have led to a greater awareness of the needs of people and the various services offered to them and crucially the gaps in the system which Anvil will be seeking to explore as things develop.

Liminal Arts has been active in the last year. We had an exhibition in November 2024 and in June of 2025. 10-15 local artists have been given a platform to show their work and we had over one hundred people coming to visit each exhibition. On both occasions there were events hosted where artists talked about their work, with poets and musicians sharing their work too. We are seeing greater engagement from the community with our exhibitions and arts events and are seeing a loose community developing around Liminal Arts. Liminal Arts has another smaller exhibition beginning on 27th Nov 2025, and are experimenting with the rhythm being Spring/Summer in a larger space and Autumn in a smaller space.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

- accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act or

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
