**in our first year of operation towards**
**our vision for Rise Walled Garden as a**
**new community garden in the UK.**
**We have developed a dedicated team of**
**six volunteers from the local community**
**who have given over 1000 hours of their**
**time in 12 months to develop the site.**
**We have been able to maintain our first**
**areas of fruit and vegetable growing but**
**also to enhance the site by planting a**
**new forest garden with fruit trees and**
**nitrogen-fixing shrub species,as well as**
**re-covering the worn-out polytunnel.**
**We have also started to make some**
**improvements to the site such as**
**improving storage facilitates for**
**produce and seeds.**
**Produce from the site has either been**
**shared amongst the community**
**volunteers, donated to local food banks**
**(eg. Cottingham food bank) or sold to**
**help build an income stream for the**
**running expenses of the garden.**|
**The volunteers who come to the weekly sessions have expressed that the gardening activities support both their mental and physical wellbeing, and provide a welcome space for them, whilst fostering a sense of community, and pride in what they are achieving.**
