The trustees present their report and the financial statements for the period ended 31 March 2025. 

## **Objectives and Activities** 

## **Aims and Objectives** 

Standing with Giants exists to: 

Create powerful, large-scale remembrance art installations honouring military and civilian service. Preserve the memory of those who served and sacrificed through public engagement. Provide inclusive opportunities for community volunteers to participate in meaningful remembrance projects. 

## **Charitable objects** 

To promote good citizenship for the public benefit by advancing public education and awareness of those who have died in wars or carried out other hazardous duties on behalf of the public in particular, but not exclusively, emergency services and armed forces, through the provision of large outdoor commemorative art installations where members of the public can reflect on the dedication, service, and sacrifice of such individuals, and honour and commemorate the bravery of military and civilian personnel involved in conflicts, past and present. 

## **Chairman’s Report** 

Watching the transformation of Standing with Giants from a not-for-profit community project into a registered charity has been a joy to see and be part of. We have very quickly become a well-known name both nationally and internationally, due to the phenomenal reaction we’ve had from both the press and the public. 

One of the greatest highlights for me is how we’ve managed to bring so many people together with the common cause of remembering those who have given us our freedom. It has also been heartening to see how the project has benefited so many other worthy charities by highlighting remembrance in such a visual way. 

It has been wonderful to see what the project means to our core team — the friendships and bonds that have been created, and how quickly we are able to mobilise and adapt. As well as meeting thousands of members of the public, it was a real privilege to meet the Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary, The King and Queen, Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Marlborough, and to hear President Macron and Lord Dannatt mention our installation in Normandy in their national address on 6th June. 

We very much look forward to moving the project forward. It has huge potential on both a national and international level. 

This year we again displayed our 1,525 life-size figures in Normandy, travelling in a convoy of four articulated lorries accompanied by several hundred Harley-Davidson riders. 

Bringing the installation back to the UK, we displayed once more at Stowe in Buckinghamshire, again a hugely successful event. 

We have installed ten “Women in War” figures at the International Bomber Command Centre, displayed 150 figures at Arnhem Airshow, 150 in Scotland, 43 in the Falkland Islands, and 258 at Nothe Fort in Weymouth representing those who lost their lives in the liberation of the Falklands. 

Other achievements include meeting and photographing many Second World War veterans, creating banners of them to encourage VE Day celebrations, and making figures for VJ Day, which will be displayed at St Paul’s Cathedral, Norwich Cathedral, Sandhurst, and other venues linked to VJ Day. 

We are also contributing to the anniversary of Dunkirk by creating large murals and installing a permanent steel figure on Ramsgate quayside. 

We received full planning permission for an installation created for the MOD on Salisbury Plain. Originally meant to be in place for only one month, it became so popular with the local public in June 2024 that full planning permission was granted. 

Our installations consistently help local economies: for example, in Salisbury the local pubs have benefited from increased trade, and throughout Normandy hotels, accommodation and Brittany Ferries all saw increased visitors due to our displays. 

We have also designed and created a series of miniature figures for people to purchase as keepsakes; these continue to sell very well through various shops and our own website. 

Media coverage including ITV Meridian, BBC, National Trust channels, and national press is being received. 

These projects will ensure thousands of people continue to encounter remembrance in unexpected public spaces, fostering reflection, conversation and a deeper understanding of sacrifice and service. By combining portraiture, sculpture and storytelling, Standing with Giants will continue to present remembrance in a way that is visually striking, emotionally resonant and accessible to all.

The year ahead will see us build upon our established programme of national and international installations, deepen our partnerships, and explore new ways to engage communities, schools and future generations with remembrance in meaningful and accessible ways. 

On behalf of the Trustees, I would like to offer our sincere thanks to all those who make this work possible our project coordinator, volunteers, supporters, donors, partners, host venues and the wider public. Your belief in this charity enables us to honour the past, serve the present and inspire the future.

Offered 80 x 2-hour workshop sessions to any organisation, business, or individuals to participate in the painting and assembly of the 1,475 military silhouettes which formed For Your Tomorrow: The People’s Tribute displayed in Normandy 2024 and Stowe 2024. 

## **Public Benefit** 

The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.

Standing with Giants continued to expand its national and international impact throughout 2024 and 2025, delivering largescale commemorative art installations, developing new creative works, strengthening partnerships, and engaging hundreds of volunteers and hundreds of thousands of members of the public in meaningful acts of remembrance. 

What an extraordinary year it has been! The dedication and hard work of Dan, Janette, and their team of volunteers have been nothing short of amazing. From creating a new workspace/hub and crafting stillages to pack and transport our giants, to painting, assembling, and supporting installations across the UK and beyond, their efforts have been invaluable. Our projects have taken us far and wide, including Brussels with our Ukrainian tribute, the British Normandy Memorial, Arnhem, Fort Nelson Portsmouth, Soldiers of Oxford Museum, National Trust Stowe, and Salisbury Plain for the MOD’s “Respect the Range” initiative.

## **Main Achievements - continued** 

The team has received an incredible amount of media coverage, participated in press events, and shared laughter and tears in an incredibly emotional D-Day 80th anniversary year. 

## **British Normandy Memorial** 

In 2024, nearly a quarter of a million people experienced the power and poignancy of the British Normandy Memorial, including the 1,475 servicemen placed with heads bowed on the hillside overlooking Gold Beach, each representing a life lost on D-Day, 6 June 1944. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the British Normandy Memorial, Nicholas Witchell and fellow Trustees, and all colleagues — for warmly welcoming us and providing the opportunity to display our tribute. We are incredibly grateful for the support from our amazing hauliers, D & M Plant Hire Ltd and Flegg Projects & Installation Services, as well as the 272 Harley-Davidson members from 21 chapters across the UK and France who assisted our journeys on both sides of the English Channel in April and September. 

Dan asked the Women’s Institute for their help to make 22,000 poppies. We received an amazing 37,000 knitted and crocheted poppies which also contributed to making the For Your Tomorrow display a huge success. Our installation team received help 

with installation from members of our Harley-Davidson crew, Brize Norton Airbase, BAE Systems, local expatriates, local tour guides, and French residents. 

We had the privilege of meeting many D-Day veterans. Being invited to attend the D-Day 80 commemorations at the British Normandy Memorial on 6 June 2024 was deeply meaningful. Being formally introduced to Their Majesties the King and the Queen, meeting more veterans of the Normandy Campaign, and the Prime Minister, and having “Standing with Giants” acknowledged by Lord Dannatt and Monsieur Macron in their speeches was an incredible honour. 

## **National Trust – Stowe** 

Over 85,000 visitors engaged with our installation. The daily visitor numbers were incredible, and with the sunrise and twilight events, our Giants were displayed to an incredible 85,000 visitors in 6 weeks, making it a record-breaking event for the National Trust, and it was a pleasure to work with the team. Such an outstanding success, bringing joy, reflection, and meaningful engagement to so many. 

Their volunteer network was truly wonderful, and we are so grateful for the hard work and commitment given to us during installation and de-rig, particularly when the weather was challenging. However, the determination to get the job done regardless, being wet, cold and tired, was admirable and truly appreciated. The EVENT IMPACT directly resulted in the following results achieved by national trust stowe after hosting a standing with giants installation.

## **Main Achievements - continued** 

Nicola Briggs, Regional Manager, shared: “I was moved by the whole thing and humbled, and can’t think of any other experience I have had at the National Trust that has had that impact.” 

## **VE Day 80 – Veterans Portrait Project** 

At the beginning of 2025, we photographed D-Day and Second World War veterans across the UK, inviting them to wear their original uniforms once more. Portraits were taken in Norfolk, Surrey, Bristol, Bath, London and Oxford. The portraits were displayed across Oxford city centre on lamppost banners, creating the powerful impression that the veterans were leaning from a lamppost, as if visiting from the past, and drawing widespread public attention. 

A special event was held at Oxfordshire County Hall, attended by Bert, our 100-year-old Oxfordshire Normandy veteran — alongside schoolchildren and civic leaders. 

## **Trinity House – International Histories of D-Day** 

We were honoured to be invited to Trinity House by Hong Kong researchers John, Angus and Ivan, whom we met through our work with Standing with Giants, and are pictured above with Dan Barton and Normandy Memorial Trustees, Nicholas Witchell and Lord Peter Ricketts. 

They have created a powerful exhibition telling the untold story of 24 Chinese officers who arrived in Normandy on HMS Ramillies on D-Day, playing a vital and largely unrecognised role in the liberation of Europe. 

It was a real privilege to be in the room with The Princess Royal, who unveiled the exhibition and took time to speak with us. 

## **Women at War – International Bomber Command Centre, Lincoln** 

In March, Standing with Giants installed Women at War at the International Bomber Command Centre. The exhibition celebrates the lives of ten remarkable women who played significant roles during the Second World War. The official launch was made even more special by the Royal Air Force’s first all-female flypast — a powerful and historic moment that perfectly echoed the spirit of the installation. 

The event brought together influential women from across military, business and charitable leadership. We had the privilege of meeting figures including Lisa Giles, Commanding Officer of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (PRVC); Air Vice-Marshal Suraya Marshall CBE, RAF Assistant Chief of the Air Staff; Cressida Hogg, CEO of BAE Systems; Olga Polizzi, Deputy Chair of Rocco Forte Hotels; and members of the RAF’s all-female flypast crew, among many others. 

We were also honoured to share lunch with David Hourigan, who travelled from Australia to attend. His mother, Margaret Hourigan, stands as one of the Giants represented in the installation. Margaret served as a volunteer plotter with the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) in 1940, helping to guide aircraft using radar and maps to track enemy movements — a vital role during the Battle of Britain. 

Visitors are warmly encouraged to experience Women at War in person at the International Bomber Command Centre and to take time to discover the extraordinary stories behind these incredible Giants. 

## **Operational Highlights** 

- Record public engagement with over one million combined visitor numbers across installations. Increased merchandise production and online shop activity. Strengthened volunteer recruitment. 

- Ongoing collaboration with veterans and their families whilst in Normandy for commemorations, and when they have taken part in our veteran lamppost project and visited our installations, and when Standing with Giants have attended their milestone birthday celebrations. 

## **Ongoing Installations and Touring Displays** 

Between April 2025 and March 2026, we propose to continue touring existing Standing with Giants installations and developing new displays at key heritage and public sites across the UK and Europe, including:

## **Proposed Programme of Activity** 

## **April 2025 – March 2026** 

Between April 2025 and March 2026, Standing with Giants proposes to deliver an extensive programme of national and international installations, commemorative events and community engagement projects, marking significant Second World War anniversaries and ensuring remembrance remains visible, accessible and deeply human. 

## **April 2025** 

## **British Normandy Memorial – D-Day 1475: For Your Tomorrow** 

We propose to install D-Day 1475 – For Your Tomorrow at the British Normandy Memorial, representing the 1,475 servicemen who lost their lives on D-Day under British command. 

Alongside the main installation, five celebratory figures, including Winston Churchill, will be displayed outside the Winston Churchill Centre, adding a further focal point for visitor engagement. 

We will also return to Normandy around the 81st anniversary of D-Day to support commemorative events and strengthen our partnership with the Memorial. 

## **Sword Beach, Normandy – Local Stories of D-Day** 

A smaller installation of five figures is proposed at Sword Beach, Lion-sur-Mer, representing local people involved in D-Day, commissioned through the organisers of the D-Day Swing Festival Weekend. This project will foreground civilian experience alongside military history. 

## **May 2025** 

## **Field of Heroes – South Ayrshire (VE Day 80)** 

We propose to create a new large-scale Scottish installation titled Field of Heroes, displayed at Wellington Square, Ayr (1– 10 May), as part of VE Day 80 commemorations. 

The installation will comprise 120 life-size silhouettes representing people from South Ayrshire who lost their lives during the Second World War, including piper, fusilier and newly created female service silhouettes (WRAF, WRAC and ATS). 

## **85th Anniversary of the Dunkirk Evacuations – Ramsgate** 

Standing with Giants will support Ramsgate’s Dunkirk commemorations through: 

A large mural installation depicting the evacuation of troops from France Installation of a permanent 8ft steel Tommy silhouette on the Royal Temple Yacht Club quayside 

These elements will honour the 338,226 Allied soldiers rescued during Operation Dynamo and Ramsgate’s historic role. 

## **Volunteer Research Programme** 

We propose to continue recruiting and coordinating volunteers to support historical research for a new series of short films to accompany For Your Tomorrow, honouring the 1,475 D-Day casualties. These films will deepen interpretation and digital reach. 

## **Summer 2025** 

## **Blenheim Palace & National Events** 

Twelve VE/VJ Day celebratory figures will be displayed within the Winston Churchill Memorial Garden at Blenheim Palace. 

Our 10-foot celebratory figures will also tour national events including: 

Henley Boat Show The Victory Show Historic Dockyard Chatham 

Smaller-scale installations will accompany selected events. 

## **Miniature Figures Expansion** 

Following strong public demand, we will continue to develop and distribute miniature Standing with Giants silhouettes via our online shop, offering WWI, WWII and Falklands sets to support fundraising and outreach.

Four Ribbon Boy figures will be displayed at key UK sites including St Paul’s Cathedral, Norwich Cathedral and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, commemorating prisoners of war and civilian internees in the Far East. 

## **September 2025** 

## **Royal Armouries Fort Nelson, Portsmouth – For Your Tomorrow** 

Following dismantling in Normandy, For Your Tomorrow will be transported directly to Royal Armouries Fort Nelson, forming a major autumn installation supported by national media coverage and extensive volunteer involvement. 

## **November 2025** 

## **Nothe Fort, Weymouth – Falklands Tribute** 

A full Falklands Tribute installation will be displayed, representing the 255 military personnel and three civilians who lost their lives during the 1982 conflict, creating a powerful reflective space for visitors. 

## **Community, Partnerships & Engagement** 

- Janette and Dan will continue speaking at conferences and events, including Harley-Davidson and Remembrance Riders gatherings 

UK and French Harley-Davidson chapters will again assist with cross-Channel logistics Ongoing volunteer training, installation participation and community storytelling 

## **British Normandy Memorial** 

Discussions continue regarding the return of D-Day 1475 – For Your Tomorrow from April–September 2026, with new figures in development representing additional D-Day roles. 

## **Celebration of Freedom** 

Previously displayed at Historic Dockyard Chatham, this installation will move to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard from January–May 2026.

## **Volunteer-Led Governance and Staffing** 

Standing with Giants has been a volunteer-led organisation since its inception as a charity in November 2023, founded by Dan Barton, who is also the charity’s Chair of Trustees and Creative Lead and Director. 

Prior to incorporation, the project operated as a community initiative from 2019, during which time Dan Barton and Janette Barton worked together to develop and deliver the project entirely on a voluntary basis. 

Janette Barton has worked alongside Dan since 2019, coordinating projects, volunteers and logistics. She continued in this role as a volunteer until September 2024. As the charity’s activity and scale increased significantly, the trustees determined that the level of responsibility, time commitment and operational complexity meant that it was no longer sustainable for Janette to continue in this capacity without remuneration. In September 2024, the trustees therefore approved the creation of a paid Project Coordinator role, and Janette was appointed to this position. 

Dan Barton currently remains in a voluntary role, despite contributing a level of time and commitment that is equivalent to, and often exceeds, full-time hours. This position is kept under regular review by the trustees. While Dan has expressed a strong wish to remain a volunteer, the trustees recognise that this may not be sustainable in the long term. As such, the potential future creation of a paid, part-time role for Dan is discussed and reviewed at each trustee meeting, with careful consideration given to financial viability, organisational sustainability, and governance best practice. 

The trustees are committed to monitoring staffing arrangements on an ongoing basis to ensure the charity remains sustainable, well-governed and able to deliver its charitable objectives effectively.

## **Reserves Policy - continued** 

## **Approval of Salaries and Payments to Trustees** 

Any proposal to create a paid staff role, including where this may involve the employment or remuneration of a charity trustee, must be formally considered and approved by the Board of Trustees in accordance with the charity’s Governing Document. 

Section 4 of the Governing Document permits the CIO to employ and remunerate such staff as are necessary for carrying out the work of the CIO. It further allows the employment or remuneration of a charity trustee only where this is permitted under Clause 6 (Benefits and payments to charity trustees and connected persons) and where all conditions within that clause are fully met. 

Before approving any such arrangement, the trustees will: 

Clearly identify and document the operational need for the role 

- Demonstrate that the role is essential to the charity’s effective delivery and future sustainability Ensure the role is designed around the needs of the charity, not around any individual 

- Confirm that no conflicts of interest exist, and that any affected trustee withdraws from all related discussions and decisions 

- Consider alternative options and evidence that the proposed arrangement represents the best and most proportionate solution 

Agree appropriate remuneration based on the responsibilities of the role and comparable market information 

The Board will only approve the employment or remuneration of a trustee where it can clearly justify that doing so is in the best interests of the charity, supports its charitable purposes, and complies fully with the charity’s constitution and relevant charity law. 

All such decisions will be minuted, reviewed regularly, and kept under ongoing oversight.

Standing with Giants is a registered charity governed by a CIO. 

## **Organisational structure** 

Standing with Giants operates as a charitable organisation led by a Board of Trustees, supported by a Project Coordinator (management team) and a large volunteer workforce. 

It is led by the Board of Trustees, who meet 4 times per year and oversee strategy, safeguarding, financial oversight, and risk management.

## **Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities** 

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). 

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period. In preparing the financial statements the trustees are required to: 

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; observe the methods and principles in the Charity SORP; 

make judgments and accounting estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and 

- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business. 

The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at anytime the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the accounts comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Standing With Giants (the Trust) for the period ended 31 March 2025. 

## **Responsibilities and Basis of Report** 

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). 

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

## **Independent Examiner's Statement** 

Since the Trust’s gross income exceeded £250,000 your examiner must be a member of a body listed in section 145 of the 2011 Act. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, which is one of the listed bodies. 

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or 

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or 

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and contents of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## 1. **General Information** 

Standing With Giants is a charitable incorporated organisation registered with the Charity Commission, registered charity number 1205903. The principal address is Cutmill Farm, Lynch Hill, Stanton Harcourt, Witney, OX29 5BB. 

## 2. **Accounting Policies** 

## 2.1. **Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements** 

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)", Financial Reporting Standard 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Charities Act 2011. 

The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102. 

## 2.2. **Going Concern Disclosure** 

The trustees have not identified any material uncertainties related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt about the charity's ability to continue as a going concern. 

## 2.3. **Incoming Resources** 

Income is recognised when the charitable company is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received. 

## 2.4. **Resources Expended** 

Expenditure is recognised when a liability is incurred, it is probable that the liability will crystallise and can be measured reliably. 

## 2.5. **Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation** 

Tangible fixed assets are measured at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off the cost of the fixed assets, less their estimated residual value, over their expected useful lives on the following bases:

## 2.6. **Cash and Cash Equivalents** 

Cash and cash equivalents are basic financial assets and include cash in hand and deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments that mature in no more than three months from the date of acquisition and are readily convertible to a known amount of cash with insignificant risk of change in value, and bank overdrafts.

## 14. **Transactions with Trustees** 

None of the trustees received any remuneration or any other benefits from an employment with the charity or a related entity during the current year. 

No trustee expenses have been incurred. 

## 15. **Related Party Disclosures** 

Janette Barton served as a volunteer Project Coordinator from the charity’s inception in November 2023 until September 2024. As the scale and complexity of the charity’s activities increased significantly, the Trustees determined that the operational demands of the role could no longer reasonably be met on a voluntary basis. 

In September 2024, the trustees therefore approved the creation of a paid Project Coordinator role, and Janette was appointed to this position.
