Objectives and Activities
Objects
The relief of sickness and the promotion of health of those diagnosed with anal cancer and their families/carers through –
-
Raising public awareness of anal cancer through publicity, campaigning and education.

Working alongside health providers, support organisations, research organisations, government bodies and any other relevant bodies, organisations and individuals to promote best practice in the treatment of anal cancer.

To further the research into prevention, diagnosis, treatment and follow on care.
Summary of main activities
Bottom Line carry out its charitable objectives in three main activity areas.
People living with anal cancer and their carers
The charity founded, managed and supported an online peer support group, ‘Bottom Line’, and a website for those living with anal cancer, those who provide care for them and the general public. It also worked with the general public and organisations to promote awareness of anal cancer.
Providers of care
The charity worked with other charities, health providers to promote best possible diagnosis, treatment and aftercare for those living with anal cancer.
Research and Innovation
The charity worked with academic and research organisations and industries to further innovation in, and the development of, new and improved methods of diagnosis, treatment and aftercare.

Achievements and Performance
Introduction
There was a boost in charity activities, donations and traded work in 2025/26.
People living with anal cancer and their carers and patient advocacy

The Bottom Line support group continued to grow and had almost 400 members by 31 March 2026.

In order to make more people aware of anal cancer we took part in a lived experience video produced by Cancer Research UK, and podcasts produced by the OutPatients charity and the RadChat organisation.

Started joint work with other HPV cancer charities to increase the uptake of the HPV vaccine.

Served on the editorial panel of a publication produced by the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance to provide guidance on psychological support to people living with lower gastrointestinal cancers and a separate publication on sexual function in men post cancer treatment.

Attended a reception for cancer charities and patient advocates at 10 Downing Street.

Bottom Line was one of the main organisers of an anal cancer awareness day event held in Belfast in March 2026 – the first ever held in Europe.

Appeared on the Stand Up To Cancer live broadcast on Channel 4.

Started work with OutPatients (UK) and the Cheeky Charity (USA) to produce materials and interventions to raise awareness of anal cancer amongst men who have sex with men.

Gave radio interviews to raise awareness of anal cancer.

Continued to work with The Royal Marsden hospital to design a new service for people living with a dual diagnosis of HIV and anal cancer.

Commenced work with a publisher to produce two publications on anal cancer – one aimed at clinicians and one specifically at women with anal cancer.
Research and Innovation

The charity acted as a patient expert in drafting the NHS National Cancer Plan which was launched in February 2026.

Provided a speaker at the International Multidisciplinary Anal Cancer Consortium conference in August 2025.

Delivered a learning and awareness event on the lived experience of anal to a pharmaceutical company.

Acted as a patient expert in the NICE appraisal of a new drug for the treatment of metastasized anal cancer.

Began working with the University of Aberdeen advising on patient involvement in trialling a medical device for treating anal cancer.

Were co-applicants to the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) organisation for a grant of €600,000 to set up a pan-European network of people living with anal cancer and anal cancer researchers
