The Tute

Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 30 November 2024

Achievement and performance

The year 2024 marks the first year of The Tute's operation as a registered charity, and it has been a joy to be a part of this journey, resulting in significant success. One of the key achievements to celebrate is the formation of the charity itself. The time and effort that Esther and Alex invested in their application and ensuring all the correct documents were submitted was truly worthwhile, leading to our official registration in late 2023. Since then, the Trustees and I have met regularly, enjoying the rapid growth of The Tute throughout 2024.

Our core offerings—such as the dance group, writing group, and creative playgroup—have continued to provide valuable opportunities for the people of Cambois to come together, make friends, and engage in creative pursuits. The children attending the playgroup have greatly benefited from this weekly offering, underlining skills learned from Esther like mood regulation, friendship-building, and creative thinking.

It's impressive that an organization managed by just two people has not only maintained its core offerings but has also successfully fundraised and delivered two major projects this year. These projects are Hidden Depths and Rude Health. Hidden Depths, a collaboration with November Club, was a community-wide project that united the Cambois community to create a weekend extravaganza. We worked closely with the school, the camera club, the church, the social club, as well as the writing and dance groups over an extended period to produce something truly unforgettable. It was wonderful to see people coming from far and wide to Cambois, walking through the streets and immersing themselves in a culture that showcases the story of our community.

Shortly after Hidden Depths, Esther and Alex launched Rude Health, a series of high-quality performances featuring celebrated artists like Jacky Lansley, Maggie Nicols, and Trevor Fox. Centred around the theme of health, this project attracted interest from public health officials who were eager to learn from the model we developed. It included a community art show and regular workshops with Bedlington Academy, aimed at helping children at risk of dropping out of education and residents in nursing homes across the South East Northumberland area. This initiative demonstrated that The Tute is committed to leaving no one behind in our mission to improve health outcomes.

We’re very proud of the fact that many locals in recent surveys are starting to identify Cambois as a place that is ‘changing’ and ‘inspiring’, a marked difference to the point we started from. From those who had believed Cambois to have been “isolated and deprived” came comments from people who attended the events such as “extraordinary… unusual… excellent in its artistic quality… welcoming to everyone… huge credit for the ambition” And many others along these lines which include the care, warmth and appreciation that Esther and Alex and their committed team of volunteers extended to all artists, participants and audience.

Under Esther and Alex's stewarding The Tute has been able to provide creative freelancing opportunities to many freelancers in the region and become a player in the creative economy of Northumberland.

2024 also marked the beginning of improvements to our building, including the replacement of the broken stairlift, which has enabled a new set of participants to access our space.

As we enter 2025, we are filled with optimism for the future. We look forward to continuing our partnership with November Club to deliver a follow-up project to the highly successful Hidden Depths and engaging in ongoing discussions with funders about the return of Rude Health, focusing on additional health aspects that interest the community. Our goals include targeting interventions for schools and nursing homes again, while also exploring ways to reach hostels, substance abuse groups, and men's groups, ensuring we connect with as many individuals as possible. Meanwhile, we will continue to uphold our regular offerings of writing, dance, and playgroups.
