The Trustees of Mysterious Minds present their Annual Report for the year ending 5 April 2025. Mysterious Minds continues to operate as a voluntary, community-led charity supporting families in Hull affected by bereavement through suicide. The charity remains entirely self-funded, relying on donations from the local community, fundraising events, and the generosity of supporters.

Objectives and Activities

Charitable Purpose

The main mission of Mysterious Minds is to support families who have been bereaved by suicide. We do this through practical, emotional, and community-based support, including financial contributions towards funeral costs and providing comfort to children and families during difficult times.

Who We Support

Mysterious Minds supports families across Hull and the wider Hull community, including parents, children, siblings, partners, and relatives impacted by suicide.

Activities and Services Provided

During the year, the charity delivered the following support:

• Funeral donations for bereaved families

• Christmas Eve boxes for children who have lost a parent

• Gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day

• A Christmas party for children bereaved by suicide

• Memory boxes for families

• Online support and regular check-ins including Suicide prevention and awareness messaging

• Fundraising events across the community

• Direct support to families immediately following a bereavement

These activities helped bring comfort, community connection, and practical support at the most challenging of times.

Achievements and Performance

The 2024/25 financial year was a significant period of growth and strengthened impact for Mysterious Minds.

Key Achievements

• Increased fundraising across the local community, helping grow our financial capacity.

• Raised awareness of suicide prevention, engaging both online and offline audiences.

• Improved brand awareness across Hull, with more individuals and organisations recognising our work and mission.

• Supported more families than in the previous year, demonstrating increased reach and impact.

• Increased the funeral donation amount, raising our contribution from £800 to £1,700 per family in July with the average funeral in Hull costing around £3,400, Mysterious Minds is now covering 50% of funeral costs, with the long-term aspiration to cover the full cost for families.

• Successfully hosted our first children’s Christmas party for those bereaved by suicide, creating a safe and joyful space during a difficult time.

Number of People Supported

During the year 2024/25, Mysterious Minds supported a significant number of families and individuals across Hull:

• 19 families received direct financial support in the form of funeral donations.

• We provided 36 Christmas Eve boxes to children who had lost a parent to suicide in December 2024, at an approximate cost of £6,100.

• We delivered a dedicated Mother’s Day campaign, giving flowers and candles to over 35 mothers who had lost a child to suicide, costing over £1,000.

• The charity’s online community continued to grow, reaching 263,000 followers, offering ongoing emotional support, awareness, and connection.

• Hundreds more individuals engaged with our posts, resources, awareness messages, or received informal support, including many bereaved in previous years.

This combination of financial support, emotional support, and community engagement demonstrates the broad and meaningful impact of Mysterious Minds

Income

Total income for the year was £67,327.34 , received through:

• Sponsored walks

• Community donation boxes

• Donations in pubs and local venues

• Contributions from commercial organisations

• Public donations, including monthly and ad-hoc gifts

• Donations made at funerals

Expenditure

Total expenditure for the year was £26,521.29, which covered:

• Funeral donations

• Christmas Eve boxes and children’s gifts

• Gifts

• Events and party costs

• Awareness materials

• Ah-hoc gifts throughout the year for families bereaved by suicide

• Fundraising activities

• General operational costs (printing, postage, supplies, etc.).

Surplus / Reserves

The charity ended the year with a small surplus, which has been added to reserves.

Mysterious Minds maintains financial reserves to allow us to respond quickly when a family is bereaved by suicide. These funds are crucial for providing funeral donations and emergency support without delay.

Structure, Governance and Management

Trustees

The charity is governed by a board of three Trustees and No trustees joined or left during the reporting period.

Trustee Meetings

Trustees meet regularly throughout the year to:

• Review operations

• Assess financial performance

• Set goals for the next quarter

• Discuss challenges

• Approve key decisions

Even though the trustees play active, hands-on roles, they also meet formally to ensure strong governance.

• The charity is entirely volunteer led.

• Ah-hoc volunteers support the charity.

Risk Management

Key Risks

• Funding risk: As a fully self-funded charity, Mysterious Minds relies on ongoing donations from the Hull community.

• Sustainability risk: Increasing demand for support requires steady or increased fundraising capacity.

• Reputational risk: As with any charity working with vulnerable groups, safeguarding and trust are essential.

Mitigation Measures

• Continually exploring new ways of raising funds, including events, raffles, and community engagement.

• Developing corporate sponsorships to secure more stable funding streams.

• Increasing brand presence across Hull and online to improve awareness and donor engagement.

• Maintaining clear, transparent processes for financial decisions and family support.

Plans for the Future

The Trustees are committed to expanding both the reach and the impact of Mysterious Minds in the coming year. Planned activities include:

• Further increasing the amount provided in funeral donations, aiming to cover full costs in future.

• Hosting a Christmas Carol Service for families bereaved by suicide.

• Building stronger partnerships with local businesses to secure corporate donations.

• Exploring opportunities for “Legends on the Bench” or other community-based remembrance events.

• Expanding our community outreach to support more families and individuals in need.

• Introducing awards or recognition schemes to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and contributions made by the charity and its supporters.
