**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

Lunch Bunch Chair’s Report AGM 2024

Thank you for joining us as we report on the past year in Woodley Lunch Bunch. It’s a useful exercise for us to stop and take stock, looking at the bigger picture. Obviously, we wish there was no need for us in Woodley, but sadly there still is, largely due to the cost of living crisis.

I will start with our successes this year, and I am pleased that for us as an organisation, we have a few to report. We finally received our charity status after re-applying. This was necessary due to the amount of money in our account, meaning we need to have proper oversight and procedures. We have always worked in such a way that we haven’t had to change much about the way we work. Having charity status will open up new avenues of funding for us. We also gained a 5 star food hygiene rating from the council this year. Thank you to Jen, our lead on this, who worked hard to implement procedures and paperwork to secure this great result. Woodley Town Council awarded us the Community Group of the Year in May, in recognition of the work of our wonderful volunteers. They really are a fabulous group of people who give up their time and energy to help. We really do appreciate each and every one of them. Thank you to them all. A special thank you to Louise for writing and sending out birthday cards to the children. Parents tell us how much the children love getting our card through the post. We have been Woodley’s Mayor’s Charity of the Year for 2023-24. This meant that the fundraising done by the mayor was donated to us. The mayor’s quiz raised £ X for us and we would like to thank

Mayor Janet Sartorel and her team for choosing us and for the donation.

We have had a change on the committee this year, with our treasurer, Carolyn, leaving us to focus on leading Share Woodley. We thank her for all her work while she was with us and continue to work closely with her at Share. We are delighted that Vicky Thorpe, who was volunteering with us, has taken on the role of treasurer and she has fitted brilliantly into the team. I would like to thank Vicky, who also teaches full time, for giving us some of her precious free time. It’s so lovely to welcome her.

Once again, this year we have had the opportunity to work closely with other local charities and organisations. Share has continued to be generous in providing ham, cheese, fruit and juice cartons with us, significantly reducing our outlay on lunches. We appreciate and value their support. Woodley and Earley Lions have been a continuing support for us. They donated easter eggs and chocolate advent calendars, as well as funding a day out in August at Thames Valley Adventure Park for our families with children who have SEND. The Lions Father Christmas visits our Denmark Avenue event at Christmas too , which is great fun. We have also received a generous amount of funding from Wokingham Council’s HAF scheme. This has been useful in providing healthy food and outdoor activities for the children. Woodley WI has two groups, both of whom have supported us this year with food donations. Woodley Central also supplied individual Easter kits for the children to make chocolate nests, which were enthusiastically received. We have been in a good financial position this year, which has meant we were able to give each family a £50 supermarket voucher again so they could divert money to heating bills. We also gave a £30 Amazon spend per family for outdoor activities. Obviously, both of these were appreciated by the families. We have some new funding streams in the pipeline. There have been some challenges setting up the portals to receive the money, but we are hoping that we will soon receive new funding from Amazon. Thank you to Nick, one of our volunteers who works for Amazon for applying for this money through a work scheme. Mark Vernon who works for National Grid has also made us aware of more funding opportunities with them. Thank you too to Ruth Berry for doing the same with her employer and getting some money donated from Taylor and Francis. Another opportunity that has presented itself is with Lisa Churchill at Pearlfect Little Company. Lisa has supported us with donations of various sorts and is a box host. She has offered us a free soft play session for under 5’s which we have booked at Emmanuel for next month.

We have continued having a presence in our community. We attended Woodley Winter Extravaganza and Woodley Carnival, as well as hosting the Denmark Ave Xmas lights event. We also took part in the community event organised by the HAF team. We visited Woodley Central WI to give a talk about our work one evening too. Being the mayor’s charity for the year has also raised

our profile. We have maintained a close link with Waingels school who have donated gifts for Mother’s Day and they invited us in to judge their Around the World Baking Competition. We are always available for sampling cake! As in previous years, we have many organisations to thank for their support throughout the year. I won’t list them all as they are on the slide, but I will extend our gratitude to them as they make such a difference. Thank you to all the organisations shown. Sadly, our coffee club has folded this year. While it was appreciated by the few who attended weekly, it was no longer viable with such small numbers. It was a time when families could socialise, and also meet with the staff from Reading Welfare Rights for advice and help with benefits applications. Their staff are very experienced and achieved great success for the people who made use of them. As Shirley is a trustee for them, we still maintain contact and have continued to link them up with families who need support with applications. Moving into our fifth year of operating, we have some new challenges. The biggest threat to our operating currently is that Emmanuel Church need to change their arrangement with us. Our cabin needs to be removed and we need to find a different place to store our resources. This is ongoing and is unresolved as yet. Hopefully we will find a resolution that is acceptable to all stakeholders very soon.

Next month see the first General Election since we began. It will be interesting to see where we are next year in terms of the number of people needing help. We hope that new policies will make a difference for many people and that they will be in a better financial position. We will have to see how things play out.

It just remains for me to thank our fabulous committee, who are at the heart of Lunch Bunch. They work hard with compassion, practicality, realism and dedication, and I really couldn’t ask for better. Thank you to Shirley, Julie, Jen and Vicky.
