Structure, Governance and Management
The Rollerworld Foundation is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) governed by its Constitution. The trustees are responsible for the overall governance and management of the charity and for ensuring that the charity operates in accordance with its charitable purposes.
During the year, the Foundation strengthened its board through the appointment of Abigail Diaper, a young speed skater and active volunteer. Abigail has brought valuable experience, enthusiasm and insight from the skating community and has become an important member of the Foundation’s volunteer team.
The Foundation remained entirely volunteer-led throughout the reporting period, with no paid staff employed. The trustees were supported by approximately 20-30 volunteers who assisted with event delivery, planning and operational activities over this period.
Objectives and Public Benefit
The charitable object of the Rollerworld Foundation is:
“To promote community participation in healthy recreation, in particular by the provision of facilities for participation in skating and related non-motorised wheeled sports.”
In pursuing these objectives, the trustees have had due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.
The Foundation seeks to benefit a wide range of people including children, young people, families, local communities, roller skaters, underrepresented groups, individuals facing financial barriers to participation and others who may benefit from access to healthy recreational activities and community engagement.
Activities and Achievements
During the year, the Foundation continued its mission of supporting skating-based community activities following the loss of the original Rollerworld venue.
The Foundation assisted in the delivery of four community skating events at Charter Hall, Colchester:
-
Roll With Us (6)
-
Glow To Grow (7)
-
May We Roll Together (8)
-
Skate & Scare (9)
These events provided opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in healthy recreation, social engagement and physical activity.
All events generated positive fundraising outcomes through donations received from participants and supporters. The trustees were particularly pleased with the success of Event 7, which was very busy and enabled a large number of people to enjoy a safe and inclusive skating experience.
The Foundation also expanded its accessibility efforts by providing dozens of free tickets to beneficiaries throughout the year. In addition to tickets funded directly by the charity, generous members of the skating community purchased additional tickets for others, enabling individuals from minority and underrepresented groups to attend who may otherwise have faced financial barriers.
The trustees consider these activities to have made a meaningful contribution to community wellbeing, inclusion and healthy recreation.
Volunteers
The Foundation continues to rely on the dedication and commitment of volunteers.
Approximately 20-30 volunteers contributed their time during the year, supporting event operations, administration, event setup and community engagement activities. The trustees wish to record their appreciation for the contribution made by all volunteers and supporters.
Financial Review
The Foundation experienced a positive year of development and growth.
Income was generated primarily through donations associated with skating events and charitable activities. Whilst total income remained modest during this early stage of the Foundation’s development, fundraising activities produced several thousand pounds during the year.
Funds were applied to support charitable activities and to strengthen the Foundation’s future fundraising capability. Investments included:
-
Acquisition of a DONA contactless donation terminal to improve donation collection.
-
Subscription to a ChatGPT Business account to assist with grant applications, governance, administration and organisational development.
At 31 October 2025 the Foundation held approximately £800 in unrestricted funds.
Whilst reserves remained relatively modest at the year end, the trustees are encouraged by the substantial growth achieved since then, with reserves increasing significantly through ongoing fundraising activities. Current reserves are now substantially higher than those reported at the year end.
The trustees consider the charity to be financially sustainable and continue to monitor reserves carefully.
Risk Management
The trustees recognise their responsibility to identify and manage risks which may affect the charity’s activities.
Appropriate policies and procedures covering risk management, safeguarding, conflicts of interest, complaints handling and financial controls are maintained and reviewed regularly.
No serious incidents were reported during the reporting period.
Safeguarding
The Foundation is committed to safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults participating in its activities.
No safeguarding incidents were reported during the year.
Plans for Future Periods
The trustees remain committed to expanding opportunities for community participation in skating and related recreational activities.
A further event has already been scheduled for 7 November 2025.
The Foundation is also engaged in early discussions with the new owners of the former Debenhams building in Culver Square, Colchester, regarding the possibility of securing a lease on the upper floor of the building.
The long-term ambition of the Foundation remains the re-establishment of a permanent Rollerworld facility following the closure of the original Rollerworld venue in 2022. The trustees believe that a permanent venue would provide substantial opportunities to increase participation in healthy recreation, strengthen community engagement and deliver long-term public benefit throughout Colchester and the surrounding region.
Trustee Responsibilities Statement
The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Annual Report and financial statements in accordance with applicable law and regulations.
The trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising their powers and duties.
Approved by the Board of Trustees and signed on its behalf.
