The Rollerworld Foundation (RWF)
Trustees' Annual Report Charity Registration Number: 1205342 Reporting Year: 2023-24
Introduction
The Trustees of The Rollerworld Foundation (RWF) are pleased to present this Annual Report, which outlines our activities, achievements, and financial performance for the year. Founded with the mission to promote community participation in healthy recreation, RWF has continued to focus on fostering inclusivity and providing opportunities for individuals of all ages to engage in skating and related non-motorised wheeled sports.
As we close this year, we remain deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our volunteers, donors, and the wider community, who have helped bring our vision to life.
Objectives and Activities
The Rollerworld Foundation operates under the objective of promoting healthy recreation by providing facilities and opportunities for skating and related activities.
This year, RWF organised six major events attended by over 2,000 people of all ages, bringing the spirit of Rollerworld back to life. The events, held primarily at Charter Hall in Colchester and one in Ipswich, were structured into three categories:
-
Relaxed sessions with low sound and bright lights for parents, carers, wheelchair users, and younger participants.
-
Family-friendly sessions for participants of all ages.
-
14+ and adult sessions with a lively atmosphere for older attendees.
All events were supported by skate coaches, stewards, DJs, and over 30 dedicated volunteers from the skating and business community. The sessions also included raffles, with prizes generously donated by local and national businesses.
The events provided not only a space for physical activity but also a sense of belonging and community for many participants. Attendees shared heartfelt feedback, expressing how these events positively impacted their mental and physical well-being. Notable highlights included BBC and ITV coverage, and the addition of new volunteers, such as David, a mentally disabled man who has joined our team, and James, a much-loved participant, who has become a regular at all events.
Governance and Management
RWF's governance is led by its trustees, who ensure compliance with our charitable objectives. This year, the trustees met regularly via email and WhatsApp, facilitated by Faye Wilson, our
General Secretary. A significant milestone was the appointment of Abigail Diaper , a 21-year-old inline skater, as a trustee, enhancing the diversity of our board.
We faced some challenges, particularly in the day-to-day management of volunteers and delays in grant applications due to personal circumstances. However, our community's resilience and passion have enabled us to sustain momentum.
Financial Review
RWF started the year with no funds and ended with a surplus of over £2,000. Income was primarily generated from event ticket sales, donations, and raffles, while the largest expenditure was the PO Box service. Detailed accounts will be submitted in line with Charity Commission requirements.
Surplus funds are being allocated to future projects, including upcoming events and operational improvements.
Future Plans
RWF looks forward to expanding its reach and impact in the coming year. Tickets are already on sale for our next events, scheduled for May 2025 and 8[th] February 2025 , with strong early interest.
Key initiatives include:
-
Enhancing grant application processes with a new Grants Co-ordinator.
-
Growing our digital presence through our new website, Rollerworld.foundation .
-
Strengthening communications and outreach through a small media team led by Faye Wilson.
These developments, alongside the ongoing commitment of our volunteers and supporters, set a strong foundation for the future.
Conclusion
Reflecting on our achievements, we are inspired by the stories of transformation and joy that our events have brought to the community. As one trustee put it:
"I am excited for the future of the foundation. We have a strong group of incredible volunteers and huge support by the public. Perhaps with time and a little luck, Rollerworld 2 will become the reality that we are all hoping so much for."
We extend our deepest thanks to everyone who has contributed to RWF's success and look forward to building on this momentum in the year ahead.
