## **Objectives & Activities**

Objectives:

- To preserve and protect the dental health of children and young people referred to the Community Dental Services in Wales by providing and assisting in the provision of incentives for the children and young people to undertake dental treatment, in particular but not exclusively the provision of small Lego mini-builds that are awarded to those who complete their dental treatment.

Activities:

- Accept donations of new and used Lego bricks from individuals and companies.

- Accept donations of money from individuals or in the form of grants and sponsorships from companies and organisations.

- Raise funds through charitable events, appeals, and other forms of fundraising

- Upcycle donated Lego bricks, build mini & micro models and distribute them to community dental clinics in Wales.

- Provide training to community dental teams to use the free resources as a Token Reward System, to facilitate the dental treatment of young patients.

## **Achievements & Performance**

During the period 18/10/2023 - 31/03/2025 we can report the following activity:

- Donations of used Lego bricks from individuals: 200 litres (50,000+ pieces)

- Donations of money from individuals and companies: £1,702

- Workshop and logistics upgrades to adapt to the needs of the charity

- Building & distributing 1,600+ minibuilds (and assorted resources) to 12 community dental clinics across Wales.

- Participation in the exhibition of the 2023 BDA CDS Group Conference, Newport, Wales, raising awareness of the charity’s purpose (Oct 2023).

- Featured interview in “BDJ in Practice” (dental publication) regarding the activities of the charity (Feb 2024).

2

- Presentation of a research project (poster) at the 2024 BDA Welsh Hospitals Dental Specialties Conference, Cardiff, Wales (Mar 2024).

- Participation in the exhibition of the 2024 BSPD Annual Scientific Conference, Cardiff, Wales (Sep 2024).

This initial operational period has been highly successful in establishing the charity's positive impact. The project has effectively engaged young patients at community dental clinics across Wales, using the Lego minibuilds as a powerful tool to reduce dental anxiety, build rapport with dental teams, and encourage attendance through the loyalty card system (token reward system).

These activities have significantly raised the profile of the Small Bricks Project, generating positive feedback from parents, carers, and dental professionals who see firsthand how the initiative makes dental visits a more enjoyable and memorable experience for children.

The financial position of the charity is healthy, providing a stable foundation for future activities. This is supported by a steady income stream from individual and company donations. Importantly, strategic upgrades to the charity's workshop and logistics have been implemented, optimising the process of Lego bricks management. This focus on operational efficiency ensures a costefficient building model, maximising the impact of both financial and material donations and promoting sustainability.

## **Future Plans**

Building upon the strong foundation of our first 18 months, Small Bricks Project is committed to deepening and expanding its impact. Our primary goal is to continue providing consistent and reliable support to our existing Community Dental Service clinic partners across Wales. Concurrently, we have plans to extend our reach to new clinics within Wales and explore opportunities to support services in England, allowing us to preserve and protect the dental health of more children and young people. To maintain engagement and interest, we will focus on designing and building a refreshed portfolio of different minibuild models. Furthermore, we aim to support dental teams by providing resources and data to facilitate research into the efficacy of token reward systems in paediatric dentistry, contributing valuable insights to the wider dental community.
