The early focus<br>was on one village called Kigoma where the<br>majority of young children could not afford<br>school fees.<br>In the school year 2024 we provided help to:<br>Kindergarten 1 child<br>Primary 6 children<br>Secondary 4 children<br>University 2 young people<br>Of the 2 University students, the woman<br>gained a BSc in information technology and<br>consolidated becoming the Executive Director<br>of ‘Let Hope Arise Africa’.  The second was a<br>bright village lad who desperately wanted to<br>study as a Doctor.  So in 2017 a few of us raised<br>monies to provide him with 60% of the fees to<br>study at Kampala International University to<br>become a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of<br>Surgery.  He graduated in August 2024.<br>The principle we operated was ‘whatever<br>financial help is given for you to get an<br>education, when you are able you give the<br>same financial help to another village family’.<br>Pass it on!<br>At the celebration of the woman (Zenah)<br>graduating with a degree (the first girl ever to<br>get a degree in Kigoma) David Leeper (now the<br>Chair of Trustees of E2L) was approached by a<br>group of women (over 400 attended the<br>celebration including 200 children with no<br>schooling).<br>I was requested to provide school fees.  Not<br>wanting dependency, I proposed that they<br>formed small groups and a micro finance grant<br>of 250,000 ugandan shillings (UGX) would be<br>given.  If the group succeeded in doubling or<br>trebling this grant through activity eg digging,<br>planting,rentingland,makingbrushes etc.|





then we would provide an incentive of a further 250,000 ugx six months later.  So initially 4 groups were set up.  500,000 ugx was approximately £104. The early success of this initiative included presentations on how to develop a business etc. led to many women asking to join the enterprise development programme. **Enterprise Development Groups** At the end of 2023 there were 3 groups remaining (Hanga mak-kwer; Mboira; Chopelwo). Total of 18 women.  The 3 remaining women from the 4[th] group joined one of the existing 3 groups. Because of the success of these groups, many women from the local villages pleaded with LHAA to start more groups. Because of the demand LHAA requested further grants from E2L based on 500,000 Ugandan shillings per group (approx. £104). The contract with the new groups was that they would return the 500,000 ugx to LHAA at the end of year 1 so it could be distributed to a new group. During 2024 an additional 10 groups were formed. A small amount of support was also given ‘per diem’ to volunteers to manage and sustain the development of these groups. **By the end of 2024 86 women were involved in receiving monies and meeting weekly to support one another.** They were also beginning to fund over 100 of their children at primary school. **Vocational skills** Early in the Enterprise development initiative women were requesting help to learn vocational skills to earn money. So a proposal from Let Hope Arise Africa (LHAA) was given to E2L to fund some sewing machines to develop tailoring skills.  8 machines were funded. And a small building to house the machines.  The building belongs to LHAA. In 2024 a group of 22 women were recruited by LHAA.  Sadly weather impacted a number of women (walked 5-7 kms to get to the training). LHAA had decided that the women had to contribute 20,000 UGX per month (£4.30) to help pay for a trainer (E2L subsidized with grant help).  Of those who completed the training the top 3 were given sewing machines 



to begin to develop a village business.  The intention of LHAA was that they would repay the cost at the end of the year 2025.  (That money would purchase machines for the next years cohort).
