The Trustees of the Charity present their annual report and accounts for the year ended 31[st] December 2024

Governing Document and Constitution:

The Governing Document has been registered with the Charity Commission under charity number 1205243.

Organisation Structure:

The Charity is managed by a board of Trustees who meet quarterly. The Trustees of the Charity are listed on the Trustees page.

They are recruited either from the Canterbury Diocesan team, volunteers or from the Deaf community.

Objectives and activities:

Objectives stated on the Charity Commission Website are “To relieve the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people in the diocese of Canterbury in particular to promote their spiritual, social and general welfare and their inclusion in society.

To provide activities and support for the Deaf community in the Canterbury Diocese and East of the Medway. Details on the Charity commission website.

The Trustees confirm they have referred to the Charity commission’s general guidance relating to their objectives.

Performance and achievements:

During 2024 the charity prepared the Deaf Club Margate for the closure of the Deaf Centre building in Dane Hill, Margate. This was being prepared for sale from January 2025.

The Deaf Club activities have continued during the year although the kitchen was not safe or fit for purpose and the club members were not allowed to use the facility, with a firm no access order in place.

Deaf Club Margate have moved activities to Westgate Social Club, where they continue to meet twice a month for social days. There are plans to support them in future activities within the wider community.

The charity joined with the Deaf Club for a closing event in December 2024.

The charity continues negotiations and discussions with Canterbury Diocese about the sale of the property and the dispersal of funds from the sale of the Deaf Centre.

A Chaplain to the Deaf is still a need in the Diocese, as there is nobody able to meet the spiritual needs of the Deaf community in the Canterbury diocese. Volunteer BSL interpreted services continue but these do not fulfil what is needed.

Income has relied on our investments and we continue to look towards grant fundraising for the future as well as some percentage of funding from the net sale of the Deaf Club.

Financial Review:

The accounts have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis.

Reserves:

These are reliant on the investment income; we have sufficient reserves to continue for a year. The expenditure needed will increase as the Charity develops its work.

Risk Management:

The Trustees are reviewing all areas of major risk and will ensure that action is taken to mitigate such.
