## **Trustees Annual Report**

## **Objectives and Activities**

Wild Tomorrow UK (the **Charity** ) is dedicated to the protection of threatened and endangered species and the habitats they call home. We achieve this as a grant-making organisation by directing donor funding to projects that support the protection of threatened species, and the habitat needed for their survival. This includes supporting partner organizations and their projects that:

* Protect and expand threatened natural habitats of high biodiversity value with a focus on Key Global Biodiversity Areas, Global Biodiversity Hotspots and Protected Areas;

Restore and rewild threatened habitats and ecosystems; Research and monitor threatened biodiversity;

Fund anti-poaching interventions including equipping and training rangers who protected threatened wildlife including rhinos, pangolins and elephants;

## **Activities and Achievements in 2024**

The year was Wild Tomorrow UK’s first full year of impact focused on supporting the protection and expansion of habitat for threatened and endangered biodiversity, and nature-focused education for children across southern Africa.

We were delighted to accept our first donations and support from individual funders and corporations within the United Kingdom.

Our outgoing grant-making support in 2024 focused on two partners, both registered local charities in South Africa: _Wild Tomorrow Fund South Africa NPC_ and _Lessons in Conservation_ .

**Wild Tomorrow Fund South Africa** is a registered Non-Profit Corporation (NPC) and Public Benefit Organization (PBO) based in the KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa. They are dedicated to protecting threatened and endangered species and their habitats within the Maputaland-PondolandAlbany Global Biodiversity Hotspot.

The newly declared protected area created and managed by Wild Tomorrow Fund South Africa, lies directly adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage iSimangaliso Wetland Park and creates ecological connectivity as a wildlife corridor connecting iSimangaliso and the Manyuwana Nature Reserve.

Their initiatives include protecting, expanding and rewilding this wildlife corridor, named the Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve.

They also are dedicated to empowering local communities through job creation, training and educational programs focused on early childhood education.

Our donors in the UK provided vital support for the newly declared Greater Ukuwela Nature Reserve on South Africa’s north-east “elephant coast” in the KwaZulu-Natal Province via our grants to Wild Tomorrow Fund South Africa. This year’s grant specifically supported the construction of Kusasa, a 7-bedroom off-grid lodge at the heart of the reserve. Kusasa, which means “tomorrow” in isiZulu, has been designed with ecological sensitivity to provide sustainable eco-tourism revenue to fund the ongoing operating costs of the reserve, while creating jobs for local community members and immersing guests hands-on in conservation. The vision of Kusasa, expected to open to the public in late 2025, is for it to become a beautiful home-away-from-home that attracts conservation-focused guests to visit Wild Tomorrow’s Greater Ukuwela Nature reserve in South Africa to directly experience and support our rewilding work. The sustainable income generated by their visit will support not only the operating costs of the reserve and its restoration, but also the protection of threatened species and their habitats, anti-poaching initiatives including rhino dehornings, while creating sustainable jobs for community members working at the lodge. We hope Kusasa will inspire a new generation of conservationists, with the impact of their visit lasting for years to come.

This year we are proud to have strengthened our nature-education outreach to children across Africa through our support of our partner, Lessons in Conservation. Lessons in Conservation is a locally registered charity based in South Africa that works to create a connection between young people and wildlife across the African continent. In 2024, their immersive lessons, bringing children to the bush to directly experience

nature, stretched across 7 countries in the African continent, reaching 4,866 young hearts and minds. 8 out of 10 of these young learners had never been taught about conservation – and 97% responded post-lesson that “conservation is important” showing a positive shift in mindset and understanding of environmental responsibility and protection.

Our supporters remain at the core of all we do. Their continued generosity drives our mission and impact, enabling us to protect threatened wildlife and wild places in southern Africa.

As we look to the future, we are excited to expand Wild Tomorrow UK’s reach within the United Kingdom, scaling up our efforts and deepening our relationships with our local partners. Together with our supporters, we look forward to a future where nature is restored and local communities thrive.

## **Public Benefit Statement**

The Charity Commission in its “Charities and Public Benefit” guidance requires that there are two key principles to be met in order to show that an organisation’s aims are for the public benefit: first there must be an identifiable benefit and secondly that the benefit must be to the public or a section of the public. The Trustees confirm that in setting the Charity’s objectives and planning its activities they have given careful consideration to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. The Trustees are satisfied that Wild Tomorrow UK meets the requirements and conforms with the Act’s definition of a charity meeting all elements of the two key principles.

## **Policy on Grantmaking**

Projects that are awarded grants must meet a number of criteria and be implemented by reputable local organizations, as outlined in our grantmaking policy.

All grant applications are considered by the Board of Trustees who will ensure the projects fall within our charitable purposes and priorities, and meet our funding criteria and, for which, the due diligence process has not identified any unacceptable issues.

Grants that are approved are entered into under a legal Grant Agreement, detailing the specific use of the funds and grantees’ reporting responsibilities.

The trustees use the following criteria to help them in making decisions on how best to allocate funding.

- Supporting the protection of habitat that is at immediate risk of deforestation/degradation in an area of high biodiversity value

- Supporting the protection of habitat that connects or expands an existing protected area in an area of high biodiversity value

- Protecting threatened species of fauna and flora with a conservation status classified globally by the International Union of Concerned Scientists (IUCN) Red List as ‘Vulnerable’ or above (towards Critically Endangered), or regionally as threatened.

- Supporting sustainable livelihoods for communities living in and on the borders of wildlife areas, with a focus on women and children

- Where a small grant might enable a larger project to go ahead, such as meeting a shortfall in funding.

- Any other priorities that the trustees may from time to time decide.

- All grantees must submit a report outlining how the grant was spent in accordance with the project budget and including evidence (such as receipts and invoices) to demonstrate use of funds.

**Safeguarding** : if working with children or vulnerable adults, grant applications must include details of the procedures used to ensure they are kept safe from harm and how management ensure these are applied consistently. These must comply with any regulation specific to the activity.

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

Wild Tomorrow UK was established on 09 June 2023 as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) whose only voting members are its charity trustees, governed by our Constitution.

Trustees are appointed by the Board of Trustees to serve for an initial term of three years after which period they may put themselves forward for reelection at the Annual General Meeting for a further term of three years.

In selecting individuals for appointment as charity trustees, the charity trustees must have the skills, knowledge and experience needed for the effective administration of the charity, and a proven interest in and dedication for wildlife conservation.

Wild Tomorrow UK is managed by the Trustees and does not currently employ local staff. The Trustees meet quarterly. There is regular and valuable communication between the Trustees and the senior management of partner organisations

Wild Tomorrow UK has a formal Memorandum of Understanding in place with our key partner, Wild Tomorrow Fund South Africa NPC, a registered charity in South Africa.

Wild Tomorrow UK works closely with Wild Tomorrow Fund Inc in the US, to collaborate on global strategy and coordinated support for Wild Tomorrow South Africa NPC.
