Aims and objectives

The Alkionides UK Charity exists to provide emergency assistance to individuals in the UK Cypriot & Greek communities on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the committee. It mainly provides relief of financial hardship of needy patients and their families from Cyprus undergoing medical treatment in UK hospitals, by providing free accommodation and/or by making grants of money for providing or paying for services or facilities not otherwise provided for.

Additionally, the charity instigates projects and programmes to help groups or individuals in the British Cypriot community such as families that have children with special educational needs and disabilities or students from low-income families, as discussed and approved by the committee.

Generally, for such other charitable purposes which are for public benefit as the Trustees shall from time to time in their absolute discretion think fit. The charity works with key partners in the UK and Cyprus to identify and ensure that patients coming to the UK are in need of financial assistance. All of the Directors/Trustees and members give their services and time voluntarily and receive no remuneration or financial benefit. The charity applies strict policies regarding the collection of funds to ensure full transparency and accountability.

Alkionides UK confirms that the trustees have paid due regard to the guidance on public benefit issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake in order to ensure that the public benefit requirements are met.

The activities undertaken in order to ensure that these public benefit requirements and the objects of the charity are met, include covering the temporary accommodation costs in central London to house several families at a time. These funds are raised through various social and cultural events, membership and generous donations from sponsors. Our ‘Nest’, is where patients are housed and brings enormous relief to those we help. Our volunteers also provide assistance with translation, telephone support, transportation to and from hospitals/airports and visit the patients and their accompanying family members and carers as much as possible.

The charity is proud to have a Birmingham and Midlands branch which also raises funds and whose members and volunteers provides much needed support to families in need. Especially by providing outings and financial assistance to families of children with special educational needs and disabilities who reside in the Birmingham and Midlands area. These families and their children currently greatly enjoy such outings and are happy to meet and support the other families facing similar challenges.

The charity aims to sponsor poor, deserving students at UK institutions to help with the enormous university costs. We feel that education is an essential commodity and will help these youngsters find and secure better careers and allow them to help their families and perhaps others too.

Summary of achievements:

In the past financial year we have had forty families stay at our ‘Nest’ as well as helping several other families who stayed in or closer to hospitals in south London. Some of the families had to stay for more than four months or had to come more than once during the year. The charity has significantly increased the help provided in covering transport costs to and from hospitals as well as from and to airports. We were able to offer bursaries to four students, from low-income families, studying in the UK, greatly easing their financial burden and we are pleased to see them all graduate with good grades. In the Midlands and thanks to a generous specific grant, the charity arranged two major outings for families that have children with special educational needs and disabilities giving them the opportunity to meet and share concerns with other families in similar situations as well as have truly memorable experiences they could never otherwise afford.

Structure and Governance

The charity is a charitable company limited by guarantee governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Associated dated 21 September 2023. The committee meet roughly every two months and hold their annual general meeting in the summer. The Trustees and Committee are all volunteers and the charity has no paid employees.

Trustees are appointed having due regard to their competence and commitment to the charity and are briefed about their duties by the committee.

President’s Annual Report

This year I celebrated my milestone birthday with my family, and the Alkionides UK teams, my extended family. I look back to 30 years of Alkionides and a path that brings back so many memories of great friendships, close community, challenges to bring change to help our patients, as well as great sadness when things don’t go to plan. I know that we must focus on what is worthwhile and to do our utmost to achieve our goals towards working for the public benefit, the relief of poverty and financial hardship and to bring some halcyon days (Αλκυονίδες μέρες) to people going through difficult times. The work of the charity is in capable hands, with a stronger team this year, all members contributing with their own strengths and a big heart.

Alkionides UK ‘Nest’news:

Our ‘Nest Team’ of 14 dedicated volunteers make sure that the patients are cared for from the minute they arrive. They welcome them and provide everything they need at the house. If required, they accompany and visit them at hospitals as well as provide help with translation. We have a registered, Greek speaking taxi driver who meets them at the airports. For low-income families we also cover transport to hospital appointments. We provide cleaning services, free internet, Cypriot TV, as well as shopping for household essentials.

The Directors and Trustees take full responsibility when we need to look at compliance and legal matters, council regulations, complaints and safety issues.

Last year our ‘Nest’ accommodated 43 families, including seven long-term:

A 60-year-old who underwent two liver transplant operations in a few days and had a six-month recovery period in intensive care. We are delighted that he has now been able to return to his home in Cyprus to meet his new grandson, although he experienced complications and was admitted in the Nicosia General hospital. We keep in touch with his family.
A 25-year-old patient who had a transplant as a baby, came twice with his mum and stayed for six months while receiving complicated treatment at Kings College hospital, where coordinator Mrs Aphroditi Pavlou sees to all the patients’ needs.
Our volunteers visited Cypriot patients at the Cleveland clinic. One was a young adult, a victim of a motorbike accident who became paraplegic. He will need long rehabilitation. A doctor, whose wife was hit by a car, vowed to work towards building a rehabilitation centre on his return to Cyprus. Another lady, stayed in intensive care for six months until they could operate. Father Pavlos from the Archbishopric visited regularly, offering prayers and comfort. Another devoted wife visited her husband daily for seven months, while she despaired at the inability to discover the virus that had infected him.
A 35-year-old, father of two young children, was sent with his brother to Stanmore Orthopaedic hospital for a complex back operation. He had been hit by a car while delivering food on his motor bike. We provided financial and moral support during these long months.

When the day comes for patients to go back home, it is a very emotional experience for patients and their families, but also for our volunteers who devote so much time looking after them throughout their ordeal. We are very grateful to all the doctors and hospital staff. We are proud of top liver transplant surgeon, Dr Stephanos Pericleous from Cyprus, at the Royal Free Hospital, whom we honoured recently.

Alkionides Birmingham & Midlands:

Trustees and Directors, Liliana Malla and Helen Vasiliou, continue to organise outings funded by the Keith Coombs Trust, since 2019. Children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) join our volunteers with their families and carers and have great fun together. They share their stories over lunch (often sponsored by Mr K. Akathiotis) and many have become friends over the years. Last summer they had the opportunity to visit Drayton Manor Resort, followed by a festive Christmas trip to Winter Wonderland.

Thanks to our sponsors, we are able to also support these families financially at Christmas and Easter, as well as some individuals in the community who are struggling to make ends meet. Recently we helped a divorced Cypriot mother of two young children by refurbishing a council flat that was in a terrible condition.

Sponsors and philanthropists, Mr and Mrs J. Koumi, organise a wonderful evening at the Estia in Birmingham every year. An event organised for the community by energetic and passionate volunteers, the ‘Rebetiki Vradia’ in November, inspires everyone to dance and sing while enjoying delicious home food and contributing generously towards charitable causes.

London events:

We are very proud of Anna Nicholsby Baker, who braved the cold September Serpentine lake in London to swim two miles for Alkionides UK.
His excellency, our Patron, the High Commissioner Dr Kyriacos Kouros and his wife Mrs Vasiliki Kinani Kourou, joined us for a crisp 10K sponsored walk in Hyde Park ‘from Palace to Palace’, on the 26 October. We walked from Kensington palace to Buckingham Palace and were treated to a champagne luncheon by our sponsors, Mr and Mrs N. Hambi of the Windermere Hotel, Victoria. The event brought together committee members, patients, volunteers and students and helped us raise a respectable sum. Ambassador, Katerina Mina soprano, walked with us and presented some of the certificates with Mrs Kourou.
Christmas carols at the ‘Nest’ in December was a very festive affair with guests of honour Mr and Mrs A. Kakouris, former Cyprus High Commissioner in the U.K who had inaugurated our new home the year before. Patients and committee members had baked traditional cookies which sold quickly. Along with our honourable guests, singers included Ambassador Katerina Mina, Eugenie Papadopoulos, Sue Kittalides, the Pittalis sisters, Mrs Maria Papalouca and Marilena Ioannidou. A gifted and inspiring band! Our young patient Andreas, a professional singer and guitar player who is losing his sight, entertained us with Greek songs. Johny Pittalis designed a beautiful kingfisher poster for our ‘Nest’ and the design will be used for Christmas cards next year.
Our Patrons, The High Commissioner Dr Kyriacos Kourou and his wife Mrs Vasiliki Kinani Kourou, hosted a beautiful ‘Summer Evening’ in their garden, on June 18, to help us fundraise towards our Scholarship Fund.

Student Grants: A committee was set up with Marina Antoniou, Tatiana der Avedissian, Miria Pittalis and Angelos Athanassiades to interview applicants studying in the UK for undergraduate and Masters degrees, who come from low-income families. With the generosity of our sponsors, we were able to sponsor seven students this year, including one of our patients who made us very proud by achieving a 2.1 in Computing at Westminster University and is now pursuing his Master’s degree in AI at the prestigious University of

In 2025-26, students included: one who is completing her studies in Ballet & Dance, two law students and our AI brilliant student. The committee has approved three more students for 2026/27 studying Maths, Chemical engineering and Law. The Xenophon Protopapas Foundation will fund one of our students throughout her/his studies. We are very grateful.

Community support:

With the invaluable help of His Eminence, Archbishop Nikitas, we were able to send Christmas and Easter vouchers to low-income families. Several of our members are involved with the Cypriot community and the directors are looking into how best we can support different projects that will benefit groups of people in organised activities. Committee members, Dr Rebecca Hadjiosif, Maro Athanasiou and Dr Serafim Kiriakides, recently observed a music session entertaining people with dementia (Dementia Club UK) in Barnet and the committee decided to cover the cost to fund some of these sessions for a month. We also cover speech therapy for a young autistic child.

Financial Review

All funds are deposited in current or deposit bank accounts from which disbursements are made. As at the year end the charity held £1,399,691 in net assets of which 906,033 was the value of the ‘Nest’ and the remainder held as cash deposits in UK banks. The majority of funds is raised from donations, memberships and charity events. These funds are sufficient to cover the charity’s long-term needs.

The Charity prides itself in keeping all administration costs to an absolute minimum, less than 5%, to ensure that all money raised is able to be used to help those in need. We do not employ staff, rent office space nor incur costly administrative overheads. Please refer to our accounts for further details.

Consumables such as cleaning materials for the ‘Nest’, administrative charges for website hosting, printing, as well as event-related costs and software licenses amounting to several hundred pounds are generously provided by the trustees and other members and do not appear in the Charity’s accounts.

The Trustees are very much aware that the charity is continuing to accumulate a large financial surplus. It was intended that a second property would be purchased to temporarily house more patients, ideally in the Birmingham area. However, in the near future, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus is looking to continue to send patients only to London hospitals so the Trustees are looking at other projects and ways to utilize the funds and have applied to the Charity Commission to expand the objects of the charity and we await their favourable response.

Main Achievements

In March 2026 Alkionides UK celebrated three years in the ‘Nest’ a six-bedroom residential property in North London that is used to temporarily house the patients and their carers. During the year over fifty different families have benefited from staying at the nest and several more from further assistance with hotel accommodation.

President’s Annual Report

Our Constitution stipulates that we, the volunteers, promise to help patients and their families, as well as children with special educational needs and individuals in the community going through times of crisis.

This past year, which started with the acquisition of a six-bedroom property, highlighted the enormous responsibilities involved in this initiative. Since last February, we have provided free accommodation and moral support to so many people. During this time, we watched families experiencing trauma through sudden accidents and rare conditions affecting young adults, children, husbands and wives. We have also observed relationships grow between our volunteers and these families, between individuals travelling together to and from hospitals and all meeting round the kitchen table, for breakfast or a night cup. They share their thoughts and their problems.

The newly founded Cleveland Clinic has become the choice hospital of the Cyprus Ministry of Health, for rehabilitation. Several doctors and an ICU nurse come from Cyprus. Three of our patients came by air-ambulance, straight to intensive care and stayed for several months. The Government of Cyprus covers the enormous medical costs and we try to take care of the families. We provided transport for families who left early in the morning and came late at night, exhausted. We also arranged delivery of necessary shopping, uber for low-income families and Oyster cards for public transport to hospitals. We employ cleaners and buy kitchen appliances and anything else they need.

During the Easter holidays, we invited two third-year student nurses in collaboration with the European University of Cyprus, our idea embraced enthusiastically by Former Minister of Health, Mrs P. Kanari, Professor P. Papageorgis and Dr M. Prodromou. Maria and Katerina stayed at the ‘Nest’ for two weeks over Easter, sharing the lives and emotions of families who are traumatised by the suffering of their loved ones. Director Angelos Athanassiades and committee member Sue Kittalides, greeted them on arrival, offering essential shopping and pocket money for their stay. Our dynamic vicepresident, Eugenie Papadopoulos, took our visitors on a guided tour of London the next day. Mrs Agni Iacovides sponsored their airline tickets in Cyprus.

They had a unique opportunity to tour some of the best hospitals in the world. I had the pleasure of organising and accompanying the students to the Royal Free Hospital tour. Our very own Cypriot, expert liver transplant surgeon, Stephanos Pericleous inspired the girls and explained the careful procedure of getting consent from patients for the complex organ operation and the difficult road ahead. They met Xenia Mylona, the Greek coordinator. Dr George Papadakis, transplant surgeon at Guys Hospital and the world-renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), operated a young sixyear-old and her mother, who also donated an organ. We became very close to this family at the ‘Nest’. Our ‘Nest’ volunteers, Maro Athanasiou, Sue Kittalides, Lena Pilavaki, Dr Serafim Kiriakides and Dr R. Hatjiosif, visit often. I feel honoured to be surrounded by such great friends. Dr Papadakis kindly organised a tour of GOSH for our students. We took advantage of the location and visited the British Museum too.

At the Cleveland, young Filippos Tomazou, an ICU specialist nurse from Larnaca, gave four hours of his time to explain everything to our girls and offered help at the ‘Nest’, when needed. The responsibility of caring for vulnerable people ultimately falls on the shoulders of our volunteers. We ask that the Cypriot Government appreciates our work which provides support for these families and, more importantly, provides without further delay, a social worker/ nurse, on a permanent basis, to advise the ministry on the daily needs of the patients. His Excellency, our High Commissioner, Patron of our charity with his wife Mrs Vasiliki Kinani Kourou, have embraced our cause. In June, I had a meeting with the Minister of Health Mr M. Damianos and officials responsible for sponsored patients, to discuss ideas, one being the possibility of sending patients to Birmingham again and simplifying the payment of benefits.

This year, several babies and children were sent to Kings College Hospital, where coordinator Aphrodite Pavlou offers her full support. As the hospital is far away from the Alkionides UK ‘Nest’, we provide financial support and cover airport transport for some of these families.

In Birmingham, Directors and Trustees Helen and Lilliana, with the help of Mr & Mrs J. Koumi, Mr K. Akathiotis and the whole community, organise exciting outings and give financial support to 15 families with children with special educational needs. The cost is covered by the Keith Coombs’ Trust grant, secured with the help of Mr D. Markou.

This year we supported Ioannis to achieve his degree at Westminster University as well as Antonis who is completing his Master’s degree at Sunderland University. Team member Marina Antoniou, is leading a new Student Grants Committee, with Tatiana, Angelos and Miria. Candidates can apply for funding via our website (http://www.alkionides.org).

President’s Annual Report - continued

At our Spring Tea-party in April, at the hospitable residence of Dr R. Hatjiosif, Mrs Vasiliki Kinani Kourou, presented our student visitors with ‘THE ALKIONIDES AWARD CERTIFICATE’. We were honoured by the presence of The Worshipful the Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet, Mr Tony Vouros and Madam Mayoraise, Deputy H.C. Mr S. Miltiadous, Head of Education Mrs M. Loi and Cultural Councillor Mr M. Theocharous. Mrs Kourou had also opened her residence at Christmas to help us fundraise. Our delicious kourabiedes and melomakarona, baked under the guidance of Maro at the Athanasiou residence, sold out! The Birmingham Rebetiki Vradia last November, inspired by Mrs Doula Koumi and team, was unforgettable! The generosity of the Cypriot community is legendary.

Financial Review

Financial Position

At 31 March 2026, Alkionides (UK) remained in a strong financial position, with total funds of £1,400,166. This represents an increase of £182,623 from the prior year, driven primarily by significant unrestricted donations and modest operating expenditure.

The charity holds substantial fixed assets of £906,033, mainly freehold property, and cash balances of £495,333, providing strong liquidity. Current liabilities are minimal at £1,200, resulting in net current assets of £494,133.

Overall, the year-end position demonstrates a healthy level of reserves, low liabilities, and continued financial stability, enabling the charity to meet its ongoing commitments and future charitable objectives.

Reserves Policy

The trustees recognise the importance of maintaining adequate reserves to ensure the continued operation of the charity and to enable it to meet its charitable objectives and ongoing commitments.

The charity’s policy is to retain sufficient unrestricted reserves to cover future operational costs and unexpected expenditure, whilst ensuring that the majority of funds received are applied directly towards charitable activities. The trustees review the level of reserves regularly, taking into consideration the charity’s funding requirements, future plans and financial risks.

At the year end, the trustees considered the level of reserves held to be appropriate in relation to the charity’s current activities and anticipated future needs.

Structure, Governance and Management

Governing Document

The charity is a charitable company limited by guarantee governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association dated 19 August 2022. The committee meet roughly every two months and hold their annual general meeting in the summer.

Trustees are appointed having due regard to their competence and commitment to the charity and are briefed about their duties by the committee.

Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities

The trustees (who are also the directors of Alkionides (UK) for the purposes of company law) are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under company law the trustees must not approve the financial statement unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that period. In preparing the financial statements the trustees are required to:

select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
observe the methods and principles in the Charity SORP;
make judgments and accounting estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the company will continue in business.

The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at anytime the financial position of the charitable company and to enable them to ensure that the accounts comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The trustees are responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the corporate and financial information included on the charitable company's website. Legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of financial statements may differ from legislation in other jurisdictions.

Small Company Rules

This report has been prepared in accordance with the special provisions relating to companies subject to the small companies regime within Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006.

1. Accounting Policies

1.1. Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)", Financial Reporting Standard 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Companies Act 2006.

The charitable company is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

1.2. Going Concern Disclosure

The trustees have not identified any material uncertainties related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt about the charitable company's ability to continue as a going concern.

1.3. Fund Accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Designated funds comprise unrestricted funds that have been set aside by the trustees for a specific purpose.

Restricted funds are to be used for specific purposes as laid down by the donor.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

1.4. Incoming Resources

Income is recognised when the charity has entitlement to the funds, any performance conditions attached to the income have been met, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Donations are recognised when receivable or when the charity has been notified in writing of both the amount and settlement date. Donations received for the general purposes of the charity are included as unrestricted funds unless specifically restricted by the donor.

Income from fundraising events is recognised gross when the event takes place and the charity is entitled to the proceeds. Any associated costs of fundraising events are recognised within expenditure when incurred.

Income from the sale of merchandise is recognised at the point of sale when the significant risks and rewards of ownership have transferred to the purchaser.

Membership income is recognised over the period to which the membership relates. Any membership subscriptions received in advance are deferred and recognised in the relevant accounting period.

Interest income is recognised using the effective interest method and is included when receivable by the charity.

All incoming resources are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SOFA) gross when the charity is entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.

1.5. Resources Expended

Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis as a liability is incurred. Expenditure includes any VAT which cannot be fully recovered and is reported as part of the expenditure to which it relates.

Charitable expenditure comprises those costs incurred by the charity in the delivery of its activities and services for its beneficiaries. This includes grants and donations made, accommodation costs, transportation assistance, volunteer support costs and other direct charitable activities undertaken in furtherance of the charity’s objectives.

Costs of raising funds comprise the costs associated with fundraising events, promotional activities, the sale of merchandise and membership recruitment activities.

Governance costs include those incurred in the governance of the charity and its assets and are primarily associated with constitutional and statutory requirements, including independent examination fees, legal fees and trustee meeting costs.

Support costs are allocated to the relevant activity cost categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources, principally on the basis of estimated usage and staff time where applicable.

All expenditure is recognised when there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to the expenditure, it is probable settlement will be required and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

1.6. Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation

Tangible fixed assets are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is charged at the rates stated below so as to write off the cost of the assets, less their estimated residual values, over their expected useful lives.

1.7. Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax as all its income is charitable and applied for charitable purposes.
