2. Pastor’s report - Joshua Kane
Although this is our first report as a CIO, we inherit a beautiful legacy as a church. In 1944 local Christians began outreach to local children in Mill Hill East, and this mission work grew until in 1951 a formal congregation gathered for worship. In 1963 after years of growing and fundraising for ‘a church for the people’, faithful Christians built our current home for worship in partnership with the local community. Throughout our history faithful women and men of God have sought to gather for worship, use our facilities for the whole community, and see how we might share Jesus with our friends and neighbours. On the 20th September 2015 I preached with a view, and was inducted on the 16th January 2016. As I approach 10 years serving here as pastor, I am so deeply grateful for the legacy of a church which has served this community and gathered faithfully and expectantly to worship Jesus, and in particular I’m thankful for all the ways it has been through the loving service of members that we have been able to maintain worship and mission in this community.
3. Structure, Governance and Management
Mill Hill East Church is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) governed by its Constitution adopted on 03/10/2025 . The charity is managed by a body of trustees appointed by the Church Members’ Meeting in accordance with the Constitution.
The trustees are responsible for:
-
Setting the strategic direction of the charity
-
Ensuring compliance with its charitable purposes and legal obligations
-
Overseeing financial management and safeguarding
Day-to-day ministry and operations are delegated to the co-pastors and staff team, who report to the trustees. New trustees receive an induction covering their legal duties, the church’s mission, and current priorities.
4. Objectives and Activities
The charitable purpose of Mill Hill East Church is:
“For the public benefit, the advancement of the Christian faith and its practice, especially by the means and in accordance with the principles of the Baptist denomination in Mill Hill East.”
The church advances this purpose through:
-
Worship and prayer as a gathered Christian community
-
Teaching and discipleship , including small groups and leadership development
-
Mission and evangelism in the local area
-
Pastoral care , including support for the sick, bereaved, and those in need
-
Community service , providing a centre and facilities with a Christian ethos open to all
Public Benefit
The trustees confirm that they have had due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in exercising their duties. All of the church’s activities – including worship, community programmes, pastoral care, and outreach – are open to the public and undertaken to advance the Christian faith and promote wellbeing, inclusion, and hope in the local community.
5. Trustees Annual report 2024-2025
During the year the trustees have sought to advance the church’s charitable objectives through worship, discipleship, and community engagement. The following report outlines the main activities and achievements across our ministries.
This past year at Mill Hill East Church has been one of joy and growth in our journey as disciples. At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to following Jesus together – gathering as a diverse family to worship, learn, and encourage one another. We've embraced opportunities to serve and share with our local community, embodying the love and hope we find in Christ. From new friendships to growing ministries, it's been a year of organic growth, and we’re excited to reflect on all that’s unfolded.
Over the last year we have run large scale community events each quarter. These events each drew a significant gathering from the local community, bringing in around 300+ people to each event, and often featured as invitations to our seasonal services such as Easter Sunday or our Christmas carol services. Our Superhero party and low noise fireworks event is a big dress up and party event as an alternative to Halloween with a small display and free sparklers. A short gospel message was shared before the display began. Our Christmas lights switch on was a festival event with all sorts of stalls, food, games, crafts, and at the centre the tree lighting
where we sing carols and share a Christmas message around the tree. This is our largest and most fruitful carol service and community event. We ran an Easter Egg hunt and picnic at the large park in the centre of Millbrook Park. We shared lots of chocolate and crafts and invited families to our Easter events and to the new Messy Church program in Millbrook Park School. Our summer festival was a community event with barbecue, fair games and stalls put on by members. This event always has lots of neighbours and families coming into the church and our 2025 event was packed out with live music, stalls, games and a community barbecue.
We continue to run lots of community programs, usually during school term times. Our Monday Seniors lunch has seen a slight increase in attendance, and our seniors work has added two new monthly events in partnership with Dementia UK that sees a large group of vulnerable adults and carers coming for food and entertainment in the cafe.
A lot of our work continues to serve children and young people. Our Wednesday and Friday Tots parents and toddlers group continues to grow and serve the local community with toys, crafts and songs on Wednesday and Friday mornings. For many years we have hosted an Urban Saints kids and youth club on Friday evenings, with all the volunteers being church members. However due to Urban Saints stopping the support of local groups in summer 2025, these groups are now run as Mill Hill East Church Kids and Youth clubs. Our work amongst youth has been faithful but smaller in number, and we’re currently trying some new activities to try and reach more young people, including a football and girls group. The Kids Club on Friday evenings and the Wednesday Kids Cafe English conversation sessions have reached a growing group of kids who enjoy the community, craft, play and content we offer.
Our Sunday Kids church , and Youth church have continued to gather our young people as part of our worship. Our focus is on helping them to create deep relationships with God and with each other through creative worship and learning. Our Sunday morning worship has been blessed by a growing team of musicians, singers and prayer leaders, celebrating the diversity of backgrounds, cultures and nationalities in our church. We have had several rich teaching series - an advent and Christmas season on the O Antiphons titles for Christ, our new year focus on Prayers through the Bible , a lent and Easter journey through the those who encountered Jesus on the road to the cross, and practical series such as Storybearers , and Love like Jesus . Over the summer of 2025 we had several Sundays where various members shared their testimonies, their favourite Bible verses, and their favourite worships songs, and these were really encouraging as they helped people to grow as disciples in all of life. This autumn we have been running a series on the person of Jesus, going deeper theologically but always applying insights to everyday Christian living.
This year saw some change in our staff team - Rachel Kane was on maternity leave from January to September before returning to a full time role, Josh Kane took a sabbatical from February to April as he work on a doctorate, and after covering ably during the sabbatical, Femi Onanuga moved up to Sheffield in July 2025, after four years of serving as our youth pastor and training for accredited Baptist ministry. Georgia Venn-Dunn has returned to her former role as Youth Pastor part time, supported by Alkistis Stogiani working part time as a community worker focusing on our kids and youth programs.
Sail & Anchor coffee still holds a space in our worship area for all of our midweek programs and for our community to come and gather together. As well as the seniors, kids and youth programs it hosts, we also have a space filled with soft play and toys, and great coffee and food served by the small team of staff and volunteers. We roast our own beans on site, an exciting next step in providing coffee with a mission.
WAVE church This congregation gathers monthly for worship, and is mostly comprised of adults with additional needs and autism. The worship is inclusive, the talks are often drama based, and there is an emphasis on sharing the love and welcome of Jesus. We have a community of 20 regular attenders, and have also hosted some wider events aimed at serving this community.
6. Safeguarding
As a church we exist to help people find a place to call home, and a reason to hope, as we share the love of Jesus. In fulfilling this vision, we:
-
Welcome children and adults at risk into the life of our community
-
Run activities for children and adults at risk
-
Make our premises available to organisations working with children and adults at risk
The church recognises its responsibilities in safeguarding all children, young people and adults at risk, regardless of gender, ethnicity or ability. As members of this church we commit ourselves to the nurturing, protection and safekeeping of all associated with the church and will pray for them regularly. In pursuit of this, we commit ourselves to this policy and to the development of sound procedures to ensure we implement our policy well.
Prevention and reporting of abuse
It is the duty of each church member to help prevent the abuse of children and adults at risk, and the duty of each church member to respond to concerns about the well-being of children and adults at risk. Any abuse disclosed, discovered or suspected will be reported in accordance with our procedures. The church will fully co-operate with any statutory investigation into any suspected abuse linked with the church.
Safer recruitment, support and supervision of workers

Respecting children and adults at risk

Safer working practices
The church is committed to providing an environment that is as safe as possible for children and adults at risk and will adopt ways of working with them that promote their safety and well-being.
A safer community
The church is committed to the prevention of bullying. The church will seek to ensure that the behaviour of any individuals who may pose a risk to children, young people and adults at risk in the community of the church is managed appropriately.
7. Financial Review
Transitional Financial Arrangements
Mill Hill East Church became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), charity number 1205039, on 3rd October 2023. The CIO succeeds the former unincorporated church which previously managed all the church’s assets, funds, and operations.
During this first reporting period, the financial activities of the church continued to be administered under the former unincorporated entity while the process of transferring assets and bank accounts to the new CIO was being completed.
Accordingly, the CIO itself did not hold or receive funds, nor incur expenditure during this period, and the accounts for the year ended 31/12/2024 therefore record a nil balance.
The trustees confirm that the charitable purpose, membership, and activities of the church have continued unchanged throughout the transition, and that full financial statements will be presented for the year ending 31/12/3024 , following the completion of the transfer of assets and operations to the CIO.
8. Risk Management
The trustees maintain a risk register and review key risks annually. Major risks identified include safeguarding, health and safety, financial stability, and staff wellbeing. Measures in place include DBS checks, staff training, insurance, and trustee oversight of financial and operational policies.
9. Policies and Governance Documents
The church has adopted and reviews annually:
-
Safeguarding Policy
-
Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Policy
-
Health & Safety Policy
-
Data Protection Policy
10. Plans for the Future
The trustees have identified the following priorities for 2025, building on the progress and learning of the past year.
-
Strengthening our small discipleship groups, helping new members join our discipleship path and received support in living out their in community
-
Supporting members to share their faith and live as a disciples in a changing context
-
Developing leaders from our community, particularly as we continue to build our children’s and youth outreach
-
Continuing to develop long term plans for our buildings and site
