Bounds Green Food Bank Trustees' Report For The Year Ended 31 March 2025

The trustees present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2025.

Objectives and Activities

Aims and Objectives

Bounds Green Food Bank, established in June 2020, continues to provide permanent and essential support to our local community. Demand remains consistently high, and the food bank has remained our primary focus throughout this financial year.

The purpose of Bounds Green Food Bank is to relieve poverty and financial hardship among residents of Bounds Green and neighboring areas by providing emergency food aid, essential household items, and additional support. In addition to food distribution, volunteers assist guests with housing, debt issues, job vacancies, benefits access, and other matters affecting long-term well-being.

Bounds Green Food Bank transition update

The Bounds Green Food Bank as an activity was formed during the 2020 during the Covid pandemic when the need arose to support North London. The food bank was previously under the Bowes Park Community Association (BPCA), as an essential activity under that charity. On 3 October 2023 the food bank was incorporated as its own charity and as from 1 April 2024, the BPCA began it transition activities to transfer assets, commitments, contracts, guests and donor information to the newly formed charity. As at date of signing this report the Bounds Green Food Bank has completed its transition as a new charity.

As at 31 March 2025 the only assets that had not been transferred to the Bounds Green Food Bank from Bowes Park Community Association was a cash balance of £24,973. This balance has been reflected as a debtor in the financial position report for the food bank at 31 March 2025. At the date of signing this report these cash balances have been received.

Public Benefit

All trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of Section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.

Achievements and Performance

Main Achievements

The Bounds Green Food Bank continued to operate two weekly distribution sessions throughout the year. While the primary activity remains the provision of emergency food parcels, the food bank provides much wider support to beneficiaries, including advice, signposting, and practical assistance to help address the root causes of financial difficulty.

Across 2024–25, the food bank fed an average of 1,112 people per week. This number demonstrates the sustained, high level of need within the local community.

Volunteer teams worked throughout the year to collect, sort, and distribute donations. Most food and goods distributed were donated items, collected regularly from individual donors, the Food Aid Network, various supermarkets, local businesses, and food producers. Purchased food accounted for less than 9% of the total value of goods distributed.

During the year, governance improvements continued, with strengthened volunteer onboarding, safeguarding procedures, equality and diversity training, and operational oversight.

Going Concern

The board of trustees has considered and assessed the going concern status of the charity. In reviewing the current and expected financial position, projected income and expenditure, and the level of reserves, the trustees have concluded that there are no material uncertainties regarding the charitys ability to continue as a going concern. The charity expects to continue its activities for the foreseeable future and the financial statements have therefore been prepared on a going concern basis.

Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period. In preparing the financial statements the trustees are required to:

observe the methods and principles in the Charity SORP;

The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at anytime the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the accounts comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The trustees are responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the corporate and financial information included on the charity's website. Legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of financial statements may differ from legislation in other jurisdictions.

Bounds Green Food Bank Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Bounds Green Food Bank For The Year Ended 31 March 2025

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Bounds Green Food Bank (the Trust) for the year ended 31 March 2025.

Responsibilities and Basis of Report

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent Examiner's Statement

Since the Trust’s gross income exceeded £250,000 your examiner must be a member of a body listed in section 145 of the 2011 Act. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of The Institute of Financial Accountants, which is one of the listed bodies.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and contents of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Bounds Green Food Bank Notes to the Financial Statements For The Year Ended 31 March 2025

1. General Information

Bounds Green Food Bank is a charitable incorporated organisation registered with the Charity Commission, registered charity number 1205032. The principal address is Bounds Green Food Bank, 9 Edith Road, London, N11 2QW.

2. Statement of Compliance

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)", Financial Reporting Standard 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Charities Act 2011.

3. Accounting Policies

3.1. Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

3.2. Going Concern Disclosure

The trustees have not identified any material uncertainties related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt about the charity's ability to continue as a going concern.

3.3. Fund Accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Designated funds comprise unrestricted funds that have been set aside by the trustees for a specific purpose.

Restricted funds are to be used for specific purposes as laid down by the donor.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

3.4. Incoming Resources

Recognition of Income

Income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity becomes entitled to the income, it is more likely than not that the funds will be received, and the amount can be measured reliably.

Offsetting

Assets and liabilities, and income and expenditure, are not offset unless required or permitted by FRS 102 and the Charities SORP FRS 102.

Grants and donations

Grants and donations are recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities only when the general income recognition criteria under the Charities SORP (FRS 102) are met.

Tax reclaims on donations and gifts

Gift Aid income is recognised when a valid Gift Aid declaration is in place and the claim is considered recoverable. Gift Aid recovered on donations is treated as part of the original gift and allocated to the same fund as the related donation unless the donor or the terms of the appeal specify otherwise.

3.5. Donated Goods and Services

Donated goods are measured at fair value (the amount for which the asset could be exchanged) unless impractical to do so.

The cost of any stock of goods donated for distribution to beneficiaries is deemed to be the fair value of those gifts at the time of their receipt and they are recognised on receipt. In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised as an expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution.

3.6. Stocks and Work in Progress

Stocks and work in progress are valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value after making due allowance for obsolete and slow-moving stocks.

Cost is determined using the first-in, first-out method. Cost includes all direct costs and an appropriate proportion of fixed and variable overheads.

Work in progress is reflected in the accounts on a contract by contract basis by recording turnover and related costs as contract activity progresses.

At the end of each reporting period stocks are assessed for impairment. If an item of stock is impaired, the identified stock is reduced to its selling price less costs to complete and sell and an impairment charge is recognised in the statement of financial activities. Where a reversal of the impairment is required the impairment charge is reversed, up to the original impairment loss, and is recognised as a credit in the statement of financial activities.

3.7. Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents are basic financial assets and include cash in hand and deposits held at call with banks, other short-term highly liquid investments that mature in no more than three months from the date of acquisition and are readily convertible to a known amount of cash with insignificant risk of change in value, and bank overdrafts.
