Trustees’ Annual Report for the period
From 03/10/2023 To 01/06/2024
Charity name: THE UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL SURGICAL SOCIETY
Charity registration number: 1205027
Objectives and Activities
The charity aims to improve public health by advancing standards in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of upper gastrointestinal diseases. This is achieved through international collaboration, public education, research and publication, and support for the development of relevant healthcare facilities.
During the reporting period, the charity delivered a series of educational webinars focused on various aspects of upper gastrointestinal diseases and interventions, helping to raise awareness and improve clinical knowledge among healthcare professionals and the public. Additionally, the charity led international research and audit projects, with three studies published in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to the global body of knowledge and promoting evidence-based practice for the benefit of patients and the wider public.
The trustees have had due regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit when reviewing the charity’s aims and objectives, and in planning its activities for the year. The trustees are satisfied that all activities carried out during the year directly contribute to the advancement of the charity’s purposes and provide clear benefits to the public in accordance with its charitable objectives.
Achievements and Performance
During the reporting period, the charity maintained strong momentum in delivering its mission by hosting a series of international webinars aimed at educating healthcare professionals on a range of upper gastrointestinal diseases. These sessions supported the dissemination of best practices and current knowledge across the global surgical community. In addition, the charity successfully completed and published three international research projects, further contributing to the advancement of clinical understanding and improving patient care in the field of upper GI surgery
Financial Review
During the reporting period, the charity did not have any income or expenditure. This was due to ongoing difficulties in opening a bank account, which arose from the charity’s international nature and structure. Several financial institutions declined to provide banking services, which delayed the charity’s ability to receive or manage funds formally.
Despite this, the charity continued to deliver its activities on a voluntary basis, with trustees and members contributing their time and resources without financial reimbursement. The trustees are pleased that progress was made despite these limitations and are committed to building a sustainable financial foundation now that a bank account has been successfully established.
