The past year at SAR

Wow, what a year we have had!

With the departure of our chairperson and various other administrators last September, the remaining experienced volunteers immediately took steps to ensure that the charity continued to function. New systems were set up to secure all information held by SAR and with cooperation from all remaining members. The charity has successfully moved forward, and we thank everyone for their understanding and patience throughput this difficult time.

During the year volunteers stepped up to take on responsibility for specific areas such as rehoming and transport. We then developed teams to support each other, and the result has been amazing. Working together, our small band of committed volunteers has this past year managed 41 and rehomed 23 dogs. We are following their development and will keep members informed on progress.

This figure could be more if we could sign more people up for an annual donation

At the end of August 2025, we had 3 dogs in foster placements and 2 others still with their owners awaiting either adoption or matching. In addition, we are currently dealing with 3 enquiries from owners concerning rehoming of their pets. During the year we were contacted by 10 other owners who, after advice, decided not to rehome their pets through SAR. We take this opportunity to express how grateful we are to our amazing foster carers. They have really come up trumps this year providing a temporary haven for all pets that have been surrendered to us enabling case handlers time to arrange detailed assessments of each pet before matching them to adopters or moving them on to rehabilitation where needed.

Integration with Pawlytics

We returned to the integration with Pawlytics with our website, which streamlined the process of showcasing available dogs by reducing manual work. The team are all utilising the system more to its full effect which is proving to be helpful as a place for everyone to keep information.

Fundraising Overview

Fundraising has been challenging over the past two years, yet we still raised around £20,000. Historically we managed with minimal activity, but rising needs mean we must now grow our income.

We deliberately eased back this year and, combined with fewer complex dogs coming into rescue, we’ve managed . with just a handful of fundraisers

Group Subscriptions

Our group subscription remains a steady source of income. We’ve seen a few renewals lapse, so we’ll refresh our messaging here. With 8,000 members in our Facebook group, there’s strong potential: if even a small proportion contributed £10 a year, it would create a substantial, reliable revenue stream.

London Marathon Programme

We’ve secured London Marathon Golden Bond places for the next four years. There’s an initial investment, and our four runners for 2026 each have a £2,000 target. We’ll cover modest costs such as runner T-shirts and supporter banners. As the programme beds in, we expect higher per-runner totals in subsequent years.

Fundraising

Especially we thank Alex., our fundraiser extraordinaire. Without her efforts behind the scenes we would not have the financial means with which to support these beautiful animals.

Transporters

The trustees also wish to acknowledge the work done by our transport team, efficiently moving pets around the country, sometimes at very short notice.

Notes

  1. Earlier this year SAR was successful in its application for places in the 2026 London marathon 2026. We were granted 4 Golden Bond places. The fee for each place was £475 which we have already paid. Each of our four volunteer runners has signed a contract to raise at least £2,000. We have agreed to provide some limited equipment for each runner including vests and hopefully additional costs for this will be a few hundred pounds. So, far, over £900 has been donated and we have received this sum already. We hope that in this venture donations will exceed £8,000 – we will have to wait and see how it goes.

We also have been offered 4 places for 2027, 2028 and 2029 but will wait to see how this year goes before deciding what to do.

  1. One of our dogs, Monty, that we rehomed last year is ill and needing a lot of costly medical intervention. To give him the best treatment Trustees have agreed to contribute up to £2,000 towards veterinary fees. This sum is shown as a liability for the coming year.
