REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES

FOR THE PERIOD ENDED 31 OCTOBER 2024

Objects of the charity

The charity is governed by a constitution and is constituted as a charitable incorporated organisation.

Our principal purposes are to:

Review of the charity's main activities and achievements

See appendix for full trustees' report

Pippins Community Centre CIO was previously part of the Life Community and registered separately as a CIO on 21st September 2023. On this date, £3,846 was received from Life Community. The period of this first year of accounts is from the date of registration to the 31st of October 2024

In planning the activities the Trustees have applied the guidance on public benefit issued by the Charity Commission.

Reserves policy

The trustees do not yet have a reserves policy but are focussed on building up the general funds. The trustees acknowledge the low level of general funds and are addressing this by reducing costs and potentially slightly increasing room hire prices, increasing the number of 'fiver from a friend' supporters and increasing the number of fundraising events this year.

Governance

Responsibility for setting policy and for making operating decisions rest with the trustees who meet regularly to monitor the activities of the charity. New trustees are recruited and appointed by the existing trustees.

Page 2

Responsibilities of trustees

Charity law requires us as Trustees to prepare financial statements for each accounting year which record the receipts and payments of the charity for the year.

We are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable us to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011.

We also have a responsibility to safeguard the assets of the charity and to take reasonable steps to prevent fraud or any other irregularities.

Approval

This report was approved by the trustees and signed on their behalf by:

As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner’s statement

1 Accounting policies

The accounts have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis and comprise a statement that shows the charity's receipts and payments, a statement that summarises the charity's assets and liabilities and related notes. General funds are unrestricted funds which are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objectives of the charity. Designated funds comprise unrestricted funds that have been set aside by the trustees for particular purposes. Restricted funds are donations which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by donors; they include donations received from appeals for specific activities or projects.

Pippins Community Centre Trustees Report 2023/24

This financial year has been a great year for Pippins - we have seen many signs of people and projects flourishing, blossoming and growing.

Emergency Boiler Appeal – our main focus last winter was raising enough money to repair the commercial boiler to the tune of some £3400. This was a lot of hard work but we did it with the generous support of many individuals, our fundraising team and support from Axe Valley Runners, Axminster Care Service,

Axminster Young Farmers and Axminster Town Council. This was funded by a combination of fundraising and general funds. We are hugely grateful to everyone for all of their efforts/ We hope that the boiler will now last us at least 8 years whilst we research and raise money for renewable energy.

Operation Restore - our windows restoration project has gone from strength to strength this year - a couple of our people who are in recovery are working hard at restoring the windows which is a labour of love. The downstairs windows are complete and now they are working on the upstairs windows and restoring the huge arched window in the stairwell. This is a great project and again we have been blown away by the generous support from many individuals as well as the Douglas Martin Trust and the Axminster Care Service.

Fundraising Events – our dedicated Fundraising Champion has been working hard this year on our events to raise money for the day to day running of our lovely centre. Highlights this year have

1

been our Afternoon Tea event with Axminster Rotary Club and our Pop-Up Quiz at St. Michael’s Church Beer. Nathan has a core team of volunteers who really relish being part of the events team and all have flourished in this part of centre life.

Free Community Events – we have a separate team who have experimented with our community events this year and one of the highlights was our two Crafting for Christmas sessions in November welcoming people of all ages to come and craft ready for Christmas. Both sessions were a huge success and hopefully will pave the way into more free community events in 2025.

Volunteering – our volunteers are an amazing bunch and bring so much vibrancy to Pippins. Not sure what we’d do without them all. Our volunteering roles range from gardening to maintenance, events and baking, hosting toddlers and tinies to running our events and activities. We are hugely grateful to all of our volunteers who are all amazing!

Learn Devon have brought a huge amount of strength to centre life and a huge amount of confidence to our volunteers this year with the courses that they have delivered. We are enjoying developing a strong partnership with them hopefully for years to come.

Project Flourish was a new initiative in the summer working with Axe Valley Academy and Action For Children with young people falling through the net of mainstream education. We have seen many signs of flourishing as the students have enjoyed activities such as garden design for our community garden, helping to build raised beds with our Maintenance Team, planting up the raised beds, baking and arts and crafts.

Youth Provision Conversations has provided a good space for people from various agencies and community groups to really reflect on what young people are falling through the net of provision and the opportunity to do something about it by setting up new groups and initiatives.

Our Creative Media Champion returned fresh from university and got stuck into all things creative; posters, social media and photography.

2

Our Pippins Trustees have been working hard on preparing to take on the 10-year Full Repairing Lease from Devon County Council as well as ensuring that the centre is governed and run well and all of our paid staff are supported. Our Trustees do an amazing behind the scenes job and we are hugely grateful for the time that they give and the support that each of them give to the Centre Director individually and collectively as a team.

Following the retirement of our Administrator our new Volunteer Safeguarding Admin Champion has provided great support in keeping our Safeguarding files up-to-date and has been a real blessing to us.

Our two church families that gather at Pippins; Axminster Methodist Church and The LIFE Community (Baptist Church) are the spiritual heart of Pippins and along with our three prayer groups, undergird Pippins in prayer for which we are hugely grateful.

Local Support from our Partners – we celebrated at our Partner’s Evening on the 4[th ] of November with many local charities, community groups and councils; our partnership working. We receive so much support and encouragement to keep going and to keep doing what we do which is to provide a safe place for people to be known, to belong, and to flourish and blossom and grow.

We love being Pippins and we love what we do and for 2024/2025 we are concentrating on getting the windows fully restored, getting the Lease signed off and finishing off our Community Garden – which is the whole grounds. A vision of Pippins Community Centre in a Community Garden! We are excited about the year ahead.
