Overview

This Charity shall be known and called the Old Scarcies Students Association (0SSA-UKI). It is registered in the Charity Commission for England and Wales, Charity number 1204834, in accordance withCharity Standard Of Recommended Practice ( SORP 102), Charity Commission guidelines and the Charity Act 2022 as amended in November 2025. It is a Community Interest Charity, under the guidelines of the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

The Old Scarcies Student Association (OSSA-UKI) is registered as a charity to help The Scarcies Secondary School in Mambolo, Sierra Leone, in West Africa. The school is situated in Mambolo Village, Mambolo Chiefdom in Kambia District, Sierra Leone. Mambolo Village is one of the most deprived areas of Sierra Leone where basic necessities are considered as luxuries. Families cannot boast of three square meal a day, the household daily income is less than £5. Children drop out of school because their parents cannot afford to pay school fees, school materials, etc.

The Mambolo community is a poor community. Subsistence farming is the sector of this community. In a small scale manual labour farming. They grow rice and harvest once in every twelve months. Hunger is eminent.

It is on this background the Board of Trustees initiated the idea of forming a Charity to help the Scarcies Secondary School and its pupils.

The Structure, Governance, management and control of The Old Scarcies Students Association Charity

The Old Scarcies Students Association is managed by a board of trustees. This is comprised of a chairperson, Finance committee, a Development Committee, a welfare Committee, a secretary general, a Financial Secretary, Organising secretary and a welfare secretary. The development committee must have in it the current Principal of the School who would act as the development project supervisor during the implementation of any project in Scarcies Secondary School in Mambolo. The finance Committee updates the Board of Trustees the financial strength of the Charity. The appointment of trustees to the board is simple: Members of the board must be ex-students of Scarcies Secondary School, Mambolo. Members must express active interest to the school. Members must actively participate in the affairs of the charity

The Aims and Objectives

Our Aims

The aims of the Charity shall be:

To encourage, support and promote the advancement of education and infrastructure development in Scarcies secondary school, Mambolo.

We promote the academic, Vocational, moral and physical development of our pupils through our academic curriculum, vocational, Information Technology, pastoral care, sporting and other activities. We provide an educational environment where each student can develop and fulfil his or her potential, building their self-confidence and develop a desire to contribute to the wider community. In so doing, we prepare our pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experience of later life

Our Objectives

To provide financial and material assistance to the school for the advancement of good working and learning experience for both students and staff

For the Charity to provide advice, co-ordinate and supervise individuals who undertake work around educational, infrastructure and social projects on behalf of the Association to ensure the desirable outcome is achieved at all times.

To establish and maintain good quality record library in respect of all undertakings connected with the Association’s activities.

To serve as a platform for promoting awareness and pride in being an ex-student of Scarcies secondary school.

For the Association to consider to offer learning opportunities such as rewards, scholarships and other appropriate incentives to both students and staff in order to motivate, encourage and promote outstanding performance and contribution to high standard of teaching.

To aid and facilitate the registration and establishment of the Association as a charitable organisation through which funds and learning resources can be solicited from a wide range of legitimate sources for the purpose of furthering the aims and objectives of the Association.

To seek, uphold and promote high academic, spiritual and moral standards in our ‘alma mater’, i.e. Scarcies secondary school.

To establish good relationship between the ex- Students and the School.

To create a spirit of unity amongst all members irrespective of their states of origin, tribe, race, sex, religion, status, educational qualification or political affiliation;

To conduct educational and other researches and advise the School accordingly;

To participate in the activities of the School and provide assistant whenever the need arises.

Scarcies Secondary school has no library. Our objective is to have a library that contains books, periodicals and computers for research and learning purposes. This would aid the students in their studies (assignments preparations, course

work, etc) and teachers too in advancing their knowledge. In this AI era computers are must have assets.

An IT and computer study curriculum is also desirable for the students in order for them to grasp the basic foundation and be able to compete in today’s trending technology. We aim to have a computer suite.

The school has a vocational department that comprised of Wood work, weaving and pottery. Our aim is to make these.

These aims when fully achieved would bring enormous benefits to the students, teachers and the community at large.

REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Our Charity consists of 25 members. We raise funds by members subscriptions ,lunch on sale, dinner and dance and donations.

Surpluses from our activities and members subscriptions summed up to £7647. Total expenditure was £3100.

During the year, we bought and installed a water fountain for hand washing to manage and control the Covid 19 pandemic to minimise it effect on student and staff.

We bought chairs and shipped them to the school.

We also paid for shipping of tables that were donated to us by Shirley High School, Shirley Church Road, Croydon, CR0 5EF, UK.

We also sent to the school a few used laptops.

We also encourage the teachers and academic staff by way of stipend in order to organise summer school for those final year students in preparation for the WASSCE ( GCSE Equivalent) exams. The school has been performing extremely well in the region for decades. We have achieved 100% for so many decades. The school is well known for it laboratory department (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) and the Agric field for practical.

There is also a debating session every week held on every Friday to encourage student to speak in public. It is ‘The Literary & Debating Society’.

Future Plans

Our future plans are to carry out more income generating events to boost the account balance. To encourage teachers to continue with their teaching strategy of maintaining the school’s high standard of education for our pupils and students achieving high standard of academic results. To increase the number of computers for the students and teachers for learning purpose.

It is our plan also to expand the vocational studies curriculum to include woodwork, Weaving, Pottery, Seamstress, masonry

Our school laboratories are very old and many equipment’s are dilapidated. We intend to give our financial support to for the purchase of specimens and to replace the broken equipment’s.

A new library. It is our plan to relocate the school library to a more spacious room than its current location, at least the size of three bedrooms, or build a new library. This will enable it to accommodate computers, books, all for the benefit of the students.
